공장내 설치되어 있는 수천개의 비산배출원으로부터 배출되는 VOCs의 양을 산정하기 위해서는 많은 비용과시간이 소요된다. 이러한 노력을 줄이기 위하여 전산모사방법을 이용하여 배출량을 예측하는 방법을 제시하였다. 예측된 값의 검증을 위하여 밸브, 플랜지 등의 비산배출원으로 구성되어 있는 실험장치를 고안하고 내부를 흐르는 유체의 종류 및 조건에 따른 배출량을 백포집법에 의해 샘플링하여 GC로 분석한 후, 분석된 데이터를 전산모사를 통해 얻은 결과와 비교하였다. 그 결과, 전산모사를 이용하여 밸브, 플랜지, 개방식라인으로부터 배출되는 벤젠과 톨루엔의 양을 예측할 수 있었다. Considerable effort and expense have been devoted to the estimation and acquisition of the amounts of VOCs relesed thousands of the fugitive emission sources installed in chemical processes. In order to reduce the effort required on the estimation of VOC release, a methodology using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was proposed. The estimated values were compared the experimental data obtained using a designed experimental apparatus that was composed of fugitive emission sources such as valves, pump, and flange. The emissions were sampling tedlar bags for a variety of volatile compounds at different pressures. The components were analyzed by a portable gas chromatograph. In conclusion, the amount of benzene and toluene released from fugitive emission sources could be successfully estimated using the CFD technique.

Brillouin spectroscopy has been widely used for the investigation of acoustic properties of condensed matters in the hypersonic region. A high-pressure Brillouin spectrometer was set up by combining a diamond anvil cell and a tandem multi-pass Fabry-Perot interferometer. It was successfully applied to liquid ethanol, and the pressure dependence of the sound velocity, the refractive index and other acoustic properties were derived based on the measurements. The detailed optical setup and experimental procedure are described.
Transcriptomic Analysis of Zoysiagrass Using Expressed Sequence Tags

To obtain the insights of the expression profile of zoysiagrass, we analyzed 1,618 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) derived from a zoysiagrass cDNA library. Cluster analysis identified 103 contigs (9.78%) and 951 (90.22%) singletons, yielding a total of 1,054 unique genes. Among these unique genes, 927 (88%) clones showed significant similarity to the known genes whereas the remaining 127 clones were novel. Assignment of the annotated genes using gene ontology indicated that most of the transcripts were related to metabolic processes, cellular biosynthetic processes, and transport. This is the first EST-based analysis of zoysiagrass.

Background/Aims: Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) provides high-resolution images and is superior to computed tomography (CT) scan in diagnosing small pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). As a result, the use of EUS for early detection of PDAC has attracted attention. This study aimed to identify the clinical and radiological characteristics of patients with PDAC diagnosed by EUS but not found on CT scan. Methods: The medical records of patients diagnosed with PDAC at 12 tertiary referral centers in Korea from January 2003 to April 2019 were reviewed. This study included patients with pancreatic masses not clearly observed on CT scan but identified on EUS. The clinical characteristics and radiological features of the patients were analyzed, and survival analysis was performed. Results: A total of 83 patients were enrolled. The most common abnormal CT findings other than a definite mass was pancreatic duct dilatation, which was identified in 61 patients (73.5%). All but four patients underwent surgery. The final pathologic stages were as follows: IA (n=31, 39.2%), IB (n=8, 10.1%), IIA (n=20, 25.3%), IIB (n=17, 21.5%), III (n=2, 2.5%), and IV (n=1, 1.4%). The 5-year survival rate of these patients was 50.6% (95% confidence interval, 38.8% to 66.7%). Elevated liver function testing and R1 resection emerged as significant predictors of mortality in the multivariable Cox regression analysis. Conclusions: This multicenter study demonstrated favorable long-term prognosis in patients with PDAC diagnosed by EUS but indeterminate on CT scan. EUS should be considered for patients with suspected PDAC but indeterminate on CT scan.

A double-cropping system with soybean (Glycine max) following the cultivation of potato, garlic, and onion is widely adopted in the southern region of Korea. For this system, marginal dates for planting must be determined for profitable soybean yields, because the decision to plant soybean as a second crop is occasionally delayed by harvest of the first crop and weather conditions. In order to investigate the effect of planting date on soybean yield, three cultivars (early and late maturity) were planted on seven different dates from May 1 to July 30 in both paddy and upland fields across 2012 and 2013. Soybean yields were significantly different among the planting dates and the cultivars; however, the interaction between cultivar and planting date was not significant. Based on linear regression, the maximum yield of soybean was reached with a June 10 planting date, with a sharp decline in yield for crops planted after this date. The results of this study were consistent with those of a previous one that recommends early and mid-June as the optimum planting period. Regardless of soybean ecotype, a reduction in yield of greater than 20% occurred when soybean was planted after mid-July. Frost during soybean growth can reduce yields, and the late maturity cultivars planted on July 30 were damaged by frost before completing maturation and harvest; however, early maturity cultivars were safely harvested. For sufficient time to develop and reach profitable yields, the planting of soybean before mid-July is recommended.

Background: It is important to estimate the severity of early stage cholangitis in elderly patients to determine the most appropriate timing of biliary decompression. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) is the modality of choice for the diagnosis of cholangitis; however, studies evaluating the correlation between cholangitis severity and CT findings, specifically extrahepatic duct (EHD) diameter, are insufficient. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the relationship between EHD diameter and disease severity in elderly patients with cholangitis. Methods: A total of 155 patients over the age of 65 years, admitted to the Emergency Department, with a diagnosis of cholangitis from January 2010 to December 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. Using the Tokyo Guidelines 2013, patients were grouped into mild and moderate to severe cholangitis groups. We then analyzed the patient’s medical backgrounds, vital signs, and CT findings. To evaluate the significance of the CT findings in relation to cholangitis severity, a univariate analysis was performed within each group, using the collected variables. A multiple logistic regression analysis was performed using the variables with p<0.05. Results: On univariate analysis, EHD diameter (p<0.001) and combined cholecystitis (p=0.009) were found to be significant CT findings; EHD diameter (odds ratio [OR], 1.235; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.115-1.368; p<0.001) and combined cholecystitis (OR, 2.666; 95% CI, 1.145-6.212; p=0.023) were also statistically significant after multiple logistic regression. Conclusion: In conclusion, increased EHD diameter was associated with disease severity in elderly patients with cholangitis. EHD diameter is easy to measure on CT and can be helpful in establishing an appropriate treatment plan.

We tested various pretreatments to enhance the germination of `Sea bells' (Calystegia soldanella Roem. et Schult). One experiment, which improved the germination rate by 70%, involved first scarifying the seed coats, then immersing the seeds in 50 ppm GA₃ for 24 h. A GA₃-alone pretreatment did not increase germination. However, the most effective method, with a 100% success rate, included 3 h of acid pretreatment with 98% H₂SO₄. We also used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to examine the seed-coat surfaces and cross-sections of dry seeds. SEM showed structural differences between seeds that were not treated and those exposed to 98% H₂SO₄. The latter treatment allowed the seed coats to crack and break, thereby disrupting their physical dormancy.
