        Bucillamine prevents cisplatin-induced ototoxicity through induction of glutathione and antioxidant genes

        <P>Bucillamine is used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. This study investigated the protective effects of bucillamine against cisplatin-induced damage in auditory cells, the organ of Corti from postnatal rats (P2) and adult Balb/C mice. Cisplatin increases the catalytic activity of caspase-3 and caspase-8 proteases and the production of free radicals, which were significantly suppressed by pretreatment with bucillamine. Bucillamine induces the intranuclear translocation of Nrf2 and thereby increases the expression of γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase (γ-GCS) and glutathione synthetase (GSS), which further induces intracellular antioxidant glutathione (GSH), heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) and superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2). However, knockdown studies of HO-1 and SOD2 suggest that the protective effect of bucillamine against cisplatin is independent of the enzymatic activity of HO-1 and SOD. Furthermore, pretreatment with bucillamine protects sensory hair cells on organ of Corti explants from cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity concomitantly with inhibition of caspase-3 activation. The auditory-brainstem-evoked response of cisplatin-injected mice shows marked increases in hearing threshold shifts, which was markedly suppressed by pretreatment with bucillamine <I>in vivo</I>. Taken together, bucillamine protects sensory hair cells from cisplatin through a scavenging effect on itself, as well as the induction of intracellular GSH.</P>

        웹기반 가상수업에 대한 대학생의 이미지 요인과 학생 변인별 이미지 차이 분석

        정보통신공학의 발달은 전 세계, 전 영역에 걸쳐 많은 변화를 가져오고 있고, 교육에 있어서도 교수-학습의 과정과 방법 등에 많은 영향을 미치고 있다. 최근 들어 국내·외 대학 교육에서도 이러한 최첨단 정보통신기술을 기반으로 한 웹 기반 수업과 그 효과에 대한 관심이 고조되고 있으며, 특히 대학교육에서 이러한 정보통신기술을 이용한 수업이 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 본 연구는 대학에서 이루어지고 있는 가상수업 체제에 대해 학습 주체인 대학생들이 어떠한 이미지를 지니고 있는 지에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 이를 위해서, Osgood의 의미 변별법(Semantic Differential Method)을 이용하여 이미지 조사 척도를 개발하였고, 그에 따른 대학생들의 전반적 이미지와 학생변인별 이미지 차이를 분석, 논의하였다. The purpose of this study was to analyze the students' images on cyber classes in university. In order to achieve this purpose, a questionnaire with 20 adjective-pair type items related to the images of cyber classes using Osgood's semantic differential methods was constructed and implemented to 685 university students(male 226, female 459; college of liberal arts 313, college of science 370; studied 237, unstudied 448). For the statistical analysis of students' responses, t-test and Factor Analysis in SPSSWIN program were done. The major findings were as follows: First, students had positive images on cyber classes in terms of 'convenient', 'opened', 'professional' aspects, on the other hand, they expressed negative images in that the cyber class has 'nonhuman' and 'individual' aspects. Second, as a result of examining the difference of image by gender, there were a statistically significant difference between male and female in 7 items among 20 items, and females expressed more positive images than males. Those are 'systematic-unsystematic', 'flexible-inflexible', 'able-unable' 'rational-irrational', 'professional-nonprofessional', 'human-nonhuman', and 'future-oriented - past-oriented'. Third, as a result of examining the difference of image by major track, it was found that there were a statistically significant difference between students in the college of liberal arts and students in the college of science in 5 items. Those are 'systematic-unsystematic', 'rational-irrational', 'able-unable', 'higher order level-lower order level' and 'effective-ineffective' images on the cyber class. Fourth, as a result of examining the difference of image by whether already experienced the cyber class or not, there were a statistically significant difference between experienced students and unexperienced students in 4 items, and experienced students had expressed 'positive' and 'participant' images on cyber class. Those are 'higher order level-lower order level', 'future-oriented - past-oriented' aspects of cyber class.

        Effect of Barley Containing Different Levels of Anthocyanin on the Performance and Egg Quality of Laying Hens

        산란계 사료 내 유색보리 혹은 청보리의 10 또는 20% 첨가가 산란계의 생산성과 계란 품질에 미치는 영향을 조사하기 위하여 총 200 마리의 Brown nick을 5처리구에 5반복으로 배치하며 8주간 사양하였다. 시험군의 사료섭취량, 산란율, 난중과 일산란량은 대조구와 유의성 있게 달랐으며 특히 사료섭취량, 산란량과 일산란량은 보리의 함량이 증가할수록 유의적으로 감소하였다. 계란의 품질 중 난황색, 난각강도 또는 난각색은 사양 6주차까지의 보리 시험군에서 유의하였으나 보리를 8주차까지 급이한다면 난백고와 더불어 호우유닛에 긍정적인 영향을 나타내었다. 사양 6주까지에 대한 보리의 급이는 난각색과 난황색의 수치를 첨가량에 따라 유의적으로 높인 반면 난각강도에 대한 유의성은 없었다. 산란계 사료 내 보리의 함량을 20%로 증가시켜 급이한다면 난백고와 호우유닛은 유의적으로 증가하였으며 특히, 유색보리보다는 청보리의 첨가군에서 수치적으로 높은 9.10과 94.53의 난백고와 호우유닛을 나타내었다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 산란계의 생산성과 계란의 품질을 고려한 보리 첨가 산란계 사료를 생산하고자 한다면 생산성에서는 대조구와 유사하면서도 계란의 품질을 향상시킨 청보리 혹은 유색보리를 최대 10%까지 첨가한 산란계 사료의 생산을 고려해 볼 수 있을 것으로 판단된다. To evaluate the effects of anthocyanin-fortified barley (AFB) and whole crop barley (WCB) addition to diets, 200 Brown Nick hens were assigned to 5 treatments with 5 replicates for 8 weeks. All the treated groups differed in feed intake, egg production, egg weight, and egg mass compared to those of a control group. As the intake of barley was increased, feed intake, egg production, and egg mass decreased. In terms of egg quality, the yolk color (YC), the egg shell breaking strength (SBS), and the egg shell color (SC) differed up to 6 weeks of growth. Feeding the WCB and AFB to laying hens up to 8 weeks had a positive influence on albumin height (AH) and the haugh unit (HU). Up to 6 weeks of growth, increasing the amount of barley in the diets of the laying hens had a positive effect on the SC and the YC but had no effect on the SBS. Diets including 20% AFB and WCB increased the AH and HU to 9.10 and 94.53, respectively. The results suggest that the addition of AFB and WCB up to 10% to the diets of laying hens could improve the laying performance and the egg quality.

        성인에서 장기간 Furosemide 오용과 연관된 신수질 석회화

        목 적: Furosemide 장기간 사용은 신생아에서 신수질 석회화(medullary nephrocalcinosis)발생의 주 위험 인자로 알려져 있다. 비록 furosemide가 성인에서도 여러 임상적 상황들에서 사용되지만 성인에서 신수질 석회화와 연관성은 확실하지 않다. 저자들은 성인에서 furosemide 장기간 사용과 신수질 석회화 사이에 연관성이 있는지를 알아보기 위하여 본 연구를 시행하였다. 방 법 : 오랜 기간(복용기간 범위 3-25년) 부종이나 체중 조절을 목적으로 습관적으로 furosemide를 복용한 18명(남 : 녀=1 : 17, 연령범위 21-59세)을 대상으로 하였다. 신수질 석회화는신초음파나 컴퓨터 단층 촬영, 또는 신생검을 통해 확인하였고 대상환자들을 신수질 석회화(+)군과 신수질 석회하(-)군으로 분류하여 임상적 특성들을 비교하였다. 결 과 : 신장 초음파와 컴퓨터 단층 촬영상 신수질 석회화는 양측 신장 수질부 추체(pyramid)들에서 18명 중 15명(83.3%)에서 관찰되었다. Furosemide 오용기간은 신수질 석회화(+)군과 신수질 석회화(-)군에서 차이가 없었지만(10.1±1.7년 대 15.3±0.9, p>0.05), furosemide 하루복용 용량은 신수질 석회화(+)군이 신수질 석회화(-)보다 더 많았다(538±174 대 67±13 mg/일, p<0.01). 두 군간 하루 요 칼슘배설양과 혈청 칼슘, 크레아티닌 청소율치의 차이는 없었다.대상 환자 중 3명에서 시행한 신생검 병리소견에서 국소적인 세뇨관 간질 위축과 섬유화가 관찰되었고 석회화는 외부 수질 세뇨관 간질에서 관찰되었다.결 론: 저자들은 성인에서 furosemide 장기 복용이 신수질 석회화를 유발할 수 있으며 신수질 석회화 발생의 위험성은 furosemide 복용 용량과 관련이 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 저자들은 성인에서 우연히 신장 초음파나 컴퓨터 단층 촬영상 신수질 석회화 소견이 관찰되면 furosemide 장기 오용 여부를 반드시 감별진단 해야 한다고 제안한다. Background : The use of furosemide is well recognized as a predisposing factor to nephrocalcinosis (NC) in infants. Although furosemide is widely used for various clinical settings in adults, the association of furosemide use and nephrocalcinosis in adults is not well established. Methods : We studied 18 consecutive adult patients( male : female=1 : 17, age range 21-59 years) who took furosemide habitually to control their weights or edema for a long-term period(range 3-25 years). NC was evaluated using renal ultrasonography(US), computed tomography(CT) and/or kidney biopsies. Patients were categorized into NC(+) and NC(-) groups while the difference in clinical features were investigated. Results : Renal US and CT revealed nephrocalcinosis in the bilateral medullary pyramids in 15(83.3 %) out of 18 patients. The duration of furosemide abuse was not different between NC(+) and NC(-) groups(10.1±1.7 years vs. 15.3±0.9, p>0.05). The daily dose of furosemide was higher in NC(+) group than the NC(-) group(538±174 vs. 67±13 mg/day, p<0.01), however. All patients showed a variable degree of renal insufficiency and there was no difference in creatinine clearance between two groups(p>0.05). The kidney biopsies performed in three patients showed focal tubulointerstitial fibrosis and atrophy and calcifications were observed at outer medullary tubulointerstitium. Conclusion : Long-term furosemide abuse could cause medullary nephrocalcinosis in adults and the risk of developing of nephrocalcinosis is correlated with the daily dose of furosemide. We suggest that long-term furosemide abuse should be suspected in adult patients when medullary nephrocalcinosis is incidentally detected by US and/or CT.

        영재 교육 프로그램의 개발

        기본적으로 교육과정은 무엇을 어떻게 가르칠 것인지에 관한 일종의 합리적 의사결정의 산물이다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 영재 교육 프로그램 개발을 둘러싼 다섯 가지 관점들을 비교·논의하였고, 지금까지의 교육과정 개발에서 목격되고 있는 현실적 문제점들을 다섯 가지의 측면에서 비판하였다. 이를 바탕으로, 영재성 신장에 적합한 교육 프로그램 개발을 위해 필연적으로 고민해야 할 교육과정 쟁점들을 일곱 가지로 분석 ·논의하여 향후 교육과정개발의 기본 원리와 방향을 제시하고 있다. In general, curriculum is a product of the process of a political decision-making among a variety of peoples who have different perspectives on learners, knowledge, and society as a whole. And also, it is being affected by larger social and political contexts. As curriculum has become more a centerpiece of program activity for the gifted, the field has more emphasized the importance of viable curriculum models. The purpose of this article is to reflect current status of curriculum development for the gifted, explain the commonness and differences of several perspectives on gifted education programs, and lastly, share some experiences to deliberate about several critical issues of which any activity of program development for the gifted should consider. According to Eisner & Valiance (1974), there are five conceptions of curriculum which have shaped the thinking of many educators of what a view of curriculum for the gifted might be ; curriculum as the development of cognitive process, curriculum as technology, curriculum as personal relevance, curriculum as social construction, curriculum as academic rationalism. Although educators have a freedom to choose among these various curriculum orientations, the most effective curricular incorporate or balance all of them to some extent. After reviewing those perspectives on curriculum and several difficulties which are currently confronted at the site of curriculum development, this article have tried to identify the major curriculum efforts of the gifted education field. It focuses on the issues of developing programs for gifted and talented students, rather than on specific program models. As a result, it suggested seven critical issues or value conflicts which should be considered in the process of program development for the gifted: the balance of domain-general abilities of the gifted and domain-specific abilities, mutual consideration of accelerated learning and enrichment learning, separate organization of contents versus integrated organization, the balance of cognitive domain of human development and affective domain, official curriculum versus non-official education experience, individual-oriented learning situation versus group-oriented teaming, and expert-centered approach versus practitioner-centered approach to curriculum development.

      • Association of Guanosine Triphosphate Cyclohydrolase 1 Gene Polymorphisms with Fibromyalgia Syndrome in a Korean Population

        <P><B>Objective.</B></P><P>Guanosine triphosphate cyclohydrolase 1 (GCH1) is the rate-limiting enzyme in the synthesis of tetrahydrobiopterin, which is an essential cofactor in nitric oxide (NO) production. Polymorphisms in the <I>GCH1</I> gene have been implicated in protection against pain sensitivity. The aim of our study was to determine whether single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in the <I>GCH1</I> gene affect susceptibility and/or pain sensitivity in fibromyalgia syndrome (FM).</P><P><B>Methods.</B></P><P>A total of 409 patients with FM and 422 controls were enrolled. The alleles and genotypes at 4 positions [rs3783641(T>A), rs841(C>T), rs752688(C>T), and rs4411417(T>C)] in the <I>GCH1</I> gene were analyzed. The associations of the <I>GCH1</I> SNP with susceptibility and clinical measures in patients with FM were assessed.</P><P><B>Results.</B></P><P>The frequencies of alleles and genotypes of the 4 SNP did not differ between patients with FM and healthy controls. Among 13 constructed haplotypes, we further examined 4 (CCTT, TTCT, TTCA, and CCTA) with > 1% frequency in both FM and controls. No associations of <I>GCH1</I> polymorphisms with FM-related activity or severity indexes were found, although the number and total score of tender points in patients with FM differed among the 4 haplotypes (p = 0.03 and p = 0.01, respectively). The CCTA haplotype of <I>GCH1</I> was associated with significantly lower pain sensitivity and occurred less frequently than the CCTT haplotype in patients with FM (p = 0.04, OR 0.45, 95% CI 0.21–0.96).</P><P><B>Conclusion.</B></P><P>Our study provides evidence that certain <I>GCH1</I> haplotypes may be protective against susceptibility and pain sensitivity in FM. Our data suggest that NO is responsible for pain sensitivity in the pathogenesis of FM.</P>

        영재교육 교원 연수의 중요도와 효과성에 대한 교원의 인식 분석

        본 연구에서는 2001년부터 2013년까지 우리나라 영재교육 교사 연수에 참여한 교사 2,007명을 대상으로 온라인 설문조사를 실시하였다. 조사 내용으로는 교사 연수 경험과 연수 이수 후 영재교육교사로 활동하고 있는지의 여부, 그리고 영재교육 교사 연수의 교육내용으로 각 문항의 중요도 및 전문성 향상의 도움 정도에 대해서 분석하였다. 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 영재교육 관련 연수경험은 기초연수, 심화연수, 전문연수의 순으로 나타났으며, 연수이수 시간은 60시간, 120시간, 180시간, 240시간 순이었다. 연수영역은 과학, 수학, 관찰 추천 순이었다. 연수 후에 86.3%는 강사로 활동한 경험이 있거나 현재도 하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 연수내용에 대한 중요도와 교사의 전문성 도움 정도에 대해서 전체적으로 영재의 창의성 신장기법과 창의적 문제해결력 기법이 가장 높은 것으로 나타났다. 반면, 영재교육 철학, 이론, 모형 및 연구방법과 국가 및 시·도 교육청 영재교육정책 이해는 덜 중요한 것으로 인식하고 있었다. 셋째, 재직학교별로는 초등교사들과 중등교사들 모두 창의성 신장기법을 중요하고 생각하고 있었으며, 초등교사들이 중등교사들보다 각 연수 내용의 중요도와 도움정도를 유의미하게 높게 평가하고 있었다. 넷째, 재직기관별로는 영재학급 교사들이 영재교육원 교사들보다 연수 내용의 중요도와 도움정도에 대한 인식이 전반적으로 높았는데, 특정영역(과학, 수학, 발명, 정보)에 대한 도움은 영재교육원 교사들의 인식이 높았다. 다섯째, 교과영역별 차이로는 수학 교과 교사들이 과학이나 여타분야 교사들보다 연수내용의 중요도나 도움정도에 대한 전반적인 인식이 높게 나타났다. From the establishment of the Promotion Act for the Gifted and Talented Education and Enforcement (Ministry of Government Legislation, 2000), there has been increasing need to have well-prepared teachers in gifted education. In its early days, the National Research Center for the Gifted and Talented Education of Korean Educational Developmental Institute has led the in-service training programs. Based on such early efforts to establish the teacher education system, the Office of Education at the local level (each province and metropolitan city), universities, and special institutes for the gifted education has been rapidly expanded and qualitatively developed. This study administered a 62 question survey to 2,007 teachers who have participated in formal in-service training programs specializing in gifted or talented education to measure their satisfaction with the in-service training programs and their perceptions of program’s content. The results of the study are as follows: First, the teachers as a whole are highly satisfied with the content of the in-service teacher training program for gifted and talented education and have directly applied the course content to their current teaching situations. Second, the in-service program needs to provide courses which differentiate teachers who have already successfully completed the basic level training to motivate and develop their professional competencies. Third, the scope or range of gifted education should be expanded from its math and science centered programs to include the arts, athletics and even leadership programs. Forth, the in-service basic course for gifted education should be extended to teachers in regular schools to help nurture creativity in Korean education. Lastly, to sustain the progress achieved by the in-service teacher training program in gifted education a set of nation-wide standard of professionalism, curriculum, and assessment should be established.
