Design of a shape memory composite(SMC) using 4D printing technology

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A fused deposition modeling (FDM) tool was used to fabricate a shape memory composite (SMC) that combined a shape memory alloy (SMA) with a shape memory polymer (SMP). The SMA caused a shape memory effect due to a phase change between martensite and austenite phases, in turn due to a temperature change. Also, the SMP had a shape memory effect caused by changes in the proportions of hard and soft segments near the glass transition temperature (T<SUB>g</SUB>). Usually, common SMAs and SMPs are not reversible, so these materials do not go back to their original shapes once they are deformed. In this study, we fabricated 4D printing actuator via reversible SMC actuations using 3D printing technology. Nylon 12 was used as the 3D printing material in filament form. Moreover, the volume fraction of SMA to SMP was varied to find the optimum ratio for good operation cycles. A volume fraction of SMA:SMP of 1:5 showed the largest length change, of 8 mm, and the most rapid response time, of 4 s in overall dimension of 140mm×10mm×1mm (length×width×thickness).Thus, the SMC showed promising results for the application of stents and valve controllers that could be manufactured by 3D printing technology.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> An 4D printed SMC actuator was fabricated using SMA and SMP with a FDM 3D printer. </LI> <LI> A volume fraction of SMA:SMP of 1:5 showed the largest length change of 8 mm, and the most rapid response time of 4 s. </LI> <LI> The reversible actuator mechanism explains the SMC actuation via each shape memory effect. </LI> <LI> SMC showed potential application for stents and valve controllers via 3D printing technology to achieve customized designs. </LI> </UL> </P>

Expression of cellular retinoic acid-binding protein-I (CRABP-I) in the cerebrospinal fluid of adult onset moyamoya disease and its association with clinical presentation and postoperative haemodynamic change

<P><B>Objective</B></P><P>The elevation of cellular retinoic acid-binding protein-I (CRABP-I) has been suggested as a candidate in the pathogenesis of paediatric moyamoya disease (MMD). However, few studies have addressed CRABP-I in adult onset MMD. The aim of this study was to examine the expression of CRABP-I in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of adult onset MMD, and to evaluate its association with clinical presentation and postoperative haemodynamic change.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>This study examined the CSF from 103 patients: bilateral MMD, n=58 (56.3%); unilateral MMD, n=19 (18.4%); atherosclerotic cerebrovascular disease (ACVD), n=21 (20.4%); and control group, n=5 (4.9%). The intensity of CRABP-I was confirmed by western blotting and expressed as the median (25th–75th percentile). The differences in CRABP-I expression according to disease entity (unilateral MMD vs bilateral MMD vs ACVD), initial presenting symptoms (haemorrhage vs ischaemia) and postoperative haemodynamic change (vascular reserve in single photon emission CT and basal collateral vessels in digital subtraction angiography) were analysed.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>CRABP-I intensities in bilateral MMD (1.45(0.86–2.52)) were significantly higher than in unilateral MMD (0.91(0.78–1.20)) (p=0.044) or ACVD (0.85(0.66–1.11)) (p=0.004). No significant differences were noted based on the initial presenting symptoms (p=0.687). CRABP-I was not associated with improvement in vascular reserve (p=0.327), but with decrease in basal collateral vessels (p=0.023) postoperatively.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>Higher CRABP-I in the CSF can be associated with typical bilateral MMD pathogenesis in adults. Additionally, postoperative basal collateral change may be related to the degree of CRABP-I expression.</P>

대장직장암 환자의 술전 및 술후 혈청 CEA측정의 의의

This report is a clinical study of the significance of preoperative and postoperative serial check of plasma CEA levels in 36 cases of colorectal cancer who were admitted and treated at the Chungnam National University Hospital from Mar. 1987 to Oct. 1988 and the results were as follows: 1. The positive rate of preoperative CEA level(over 5ng/ml) in colorectal cancer was 58.3% In resection group, positive rate and mean CEA level were 53.6% and 7.6ng/ml respective and in unresection group they were 75% and 36.7ng/ml respectively (p<0.05). 2. The proportion of patients with abnormal CEA level(over 5ng/ml)was 33.3% in Dukes B, 46.2% in Dukes' C and 69.2% in Dukes'D. 3. The proportion of patients with abnormal CEA level(over 5ng/ml) was 25% in wel1.diffe rentiated type, 60.9%in moderately differentiated type and 37.5 % in poorly differentiated type. 4. The recurrence rate after curative resection in preoperative normal CEA(0~2.5ng/ml) group was presumed 0% in borderline(2.6~ 5ng/ml) group was 33.3%, in high(over 5ng/ml) group was 16.7% 5. In 3 patients with postoperative liver metastasis had the highest frequency of elevated level(over 60ng/ml), whereas those with local recurrence had a lower frequency of elevated level. 6, A patient had second look procedure include segmental resection of local recurrence, buthe was dead of peritoneal caricinomatosis several months later.

The apperance of agricultural corporation means shifting of the goverment's policy of mechanization in agricultural area from joint operation to independent corporation which has firm style in management, birth of new style agricultural corporation by corporationizing, in addition from 1996. The result are as follows. The optimal commission is like that commission for cultivating and leveling the ground is the minimum 281.1 thousand von and maximum 313.2 thousand won, rearing and transplanting is the min 119.0 thousand and max 152.4 thousand won except for the assistance labor cost, harvesting is the min 223 thousand won and max 263.3 thousand won, drying is min 133.0 thousand won max 149.5 thousand won.

교통사고환자 1046예에 대한 분석 및 Modified CRAMS Scale

We retrospectively evaluated the nature, distribution, and pattern of the traffic accidents in 1046 cases of traffic accidents transported to chungnam National University Hospital from Jan. 1987 Dec. 1988. We also evaluated the ability of the CRAMS Scale to predict injury severity and mortality, and the results were as follows: 1. The age distribution was most prevalent between 25-44 years(44.6%), the ratio of male to female was 2.9:1, and the ratio of male of female of the children and old age group was 1.6:1. 2. There was no significant difference in seasonal distribution. 3. Of 1046 cases, 39.8% was associated with Orthopedic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, and Genera Surgery were 38.8%, 20.3%, and 10.0% respectively. 4. In injury mechanism, motor vehicle accident was highest in incidence(50.7%), pedestrian accident, motorcycle accident, and bicycle accident were 23.4%, 18.6%, and 7.3% respectively. 5. The most frequently injured body region was head and neck(65.6%), and then extremity and pelvis was 37.3%, and abdomen was 10.9%. 6. Traffic accident developed in urban area was 1.4 times more frequent than rural area. 7. In elapsed time from arrival to death, 77.6% was died within first 24 hours and 33.6% was died at scene or less than 1 hour. 8. The overall mortality rate was 11.9% and in mortality rate according to department, Neurosurgery was 52.8%, Chest Surgery was 20.8%, and General Surgery was 13.6%. 9. Using a cuttoff score 7 or less, the Modified CRAMS scale identified the 16.6% of the traffic accident population which were critically ill as demonstrated by a 67.2% mortality rte compared to a 0.9% mortality of those with score of 8 or greater.

심장박동 측정 센서회로 IC 설계에 관한 연구

Interface IC design for heart beat measurement sensor is proposed and executed by using current control schmitt trigger. The function of interface IC is to measure the heart beat using PPG from sensor. This circuit is composed of analog circuit that converts current signal of sensor to voltage and digital circuit that converts it to digital value. Applying OTA to schmitt trigger and oscillator, operation speed is faster and linear error is smaller than the conventional one. Besides, follow features such as low power consumption, simple configuration and high resolution, are realized by IC design.

Growing Environment Characteristics and Vegetation Structure of Daphne Pseudomezereum var. Koreana Native Habitats in Korea

Daphne pseudomezereum var. koreana is an endangered deciduous shrub distributed in mountain areas that is vulnerable to climate change. The purpose of this study was to provide foundational data on the physical characteristics, soil environment, and vegetation structure of habitats of Daphne pseudomezereum var. koreana habitat in Korea in order to help with management decisions on ecosystem restoration. Rock exposure was 15 to 35%, with an average of 24%. The native habitat of D. pseudomezereum included 129 taxa consisting of 46 families and 95 genera. Two-way cluster analysis divided the habitat into three plant communities: Community I (dominaterd by Tilia amurensis and Quercus mongolica), Community II (dominaterd by Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Acer pseudosieboldianum), and Community III (dominaterd by Ulmus davidiana var. japonica). The diversity indices for Communities I, II, and III were 1.124, 1.047 and 0.932, respectively. The soils were loam or clay loam. Soil pH, organic matter content, and available phosphoric acid were 5.40, 14.38%, and 31.08 ppm, respectively. Ordination analysis resulted that most significant factors influencing D. pseudomezereum distribution were magnesium content of soil, shrub layer, and altitude.

A 7-month old, castrated male Shih-tzu dog was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University with history of depression, dyspnea, mild scale, tachypnea, exercise intolerance and severe leanness. On physical examination, cardiac arrhythmias was heard and heart worm ELISA test was positive. Microfilaria was found on the direct blood smear. Survey radiographs showed loss of diaphragmatic line and cardiac silhouette, displacement of lung fields and presence of gas filled intestines in the thoracic cavity. Rib fracture and pelvic fracture with callus formation were found incidentally. On the basis of physical examination and radiographic findings, it was diagnosed as traumatic diaphragmatic hernia and heart worm disease. Herniorrhaphy was performed. Postoperatively, it was treated for heart worm disease and scale. There is no evidence of recurrence of diaphragmatic hernia and heart worm disease over 1 year.

신부전이 동반된 당뇨병 환자에서 발생된 침습성 모균증 : 수술과 Liposomal amphotericin B 및 GM-CSF 병합 요법에 의한 성공적인 치험 1예

저자들은 신부전이 동반된 당뇨병 환자에서 발생된 부비동형 모균증에 대하여 수술과 함께 liposomal amphotericin B 및 GM-CSF의 복합치료를 하여 성공적으로 치료한 1예를 경험하였기에 문헌 고찰과 함께 보고하는 바이다. Mucormycosis (zygomycosis) primarily affects diabetic or immunocompromised patients and typically progresses rapidly, necessitating surgical excision and antifungal therapy with amphotericin B. Large doses of amphotericin B are needed for cure, but it has the risk of causing significant renal toxicity. The recent development of liposomal amphotericin B allows antifungal therapy to be administered with potentially improved efficacy and reduced nephrotoxicity. We have experienced a case of paranasal mucormycosis successfully treated with surgery, liposomal amphotericin B and GM-CSF. A 59-year-old male suffering from diabetes mellitus for 6 years was admitted with pain at left maxillary area. He was diagnosed as mucormycosis after cytologic exam on the necrotic nasal mucosa, which showed typical hyphae. He have had diabetic nephropathy with macroproteinuria and had rapidly rising serum creatinine levels with the amphotericin B treatment: creatinine levels reverted to basal level with the use of liposomal amphotericin B. Despite surgical excision and continued antifungal therapy, his infection was not effectively controlled. Therefore, GM-CSF was administered additionally to improve phagocytic activity of leukocytes. He was finally cured after receiving a combination of aggressive surgery, liposomal amphotericin B and GM-CSF. To our knowledge, this is the first detailed clinical description of the treatment of mucormycosis with liposomal amphotericin B in Korea.
