Background & Aims: The important function of toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 in Kupffer cells and hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) has been well documented in alcoholic liver injury. However, little is known about the role of TLR3. Thus, we tested whether TLR3 activation in HSCs and Kupffer cells could attenuate alcoholic liver injury in vivo, and investigated its possible mechanism in vitro. Methods: Alcoholic liver injury was achieved by feeding wild type (WT), TLR3 knockout (TLR3<SUP>-/-</SUP>) and interleukin (IL)-10<SUP>-/-</SUP> mice with high-fat diet plus binge ethanol drinking for 2weeks. To activate TLR3, polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (poly I:C) was injected into mice. For in vitro studies, HSCs and Kupffer cells were isolated and treated with poly I:C. Results: In WT mice, poly I:C treatment reduced alcoholic liver injury and fat accumulation by suppressing nuclear factor-κB activation and sterol response element-binding protein 1c expression in the liver. In addition, freshly isolated HSCs and Kupffer cells from poly I:C-treated mice showed enhanced expression of IL-10 compared to controls. Infiltrated macrophage numbers and the expression of tumor necrosis factor-α, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 and IL-6 on these cells were decreased after poly I:C treatment. In vitro, poly I:C treatment enhanced the expression of IL-10 via a TLR3-dependent mechanism in HSCs and Kupffer cells. Finally, the protective effects of poly I:C on alcoholic liver injury were diminished in TLR3<SUP>-/-</SUP> and IL-10<SUP>-/-</SUP> mice. Conclusions: TLR3 activation ameliorates alcoholic liver injury via the stimulation of IL-10 production in HSCs and Kupffer cells. TLR3 could be a novel therapeutic target for the treatment of alcoholic liver injury.

Adequate demonstration of the structures of the posterior fossa and the midline cerebral ventricular system is one of the most difficult problems in neuroradiology. During the last 2 years, we have performed conray ventriculography on 31 patients with clinical evidence of intracranial hypertension, in whom posterior fossa lesion was suspected or a supratentorial hemispheric lesion was not evident by carotid angiography. The patient is placed in the supine position and drilled 5cm above the nasion and 3cm to one side of the midline of nondominant hemisphere. A No. 20 spinal needle is inserted through the tract and aimed toward the anterior horn of the lateral ventricle. About 4 to 6cc of conray is introduced into the anterior horn with head flexed. The head is slowly extended. Serial roentgenograms are used to follow the conray trough the ventricular system.

<P>Polycrystalline ZrO2 and yttria-stablilized ZrO2 thin films have been deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates by pulsed laser deposition methods. Pt/ZrO2/Pt and Pt/YSZ/Pt capacitor structures show giant conductivity switching behaviors which can be utilized for nonvolatile memory devices. Maximum on/off ratio of 106 and good endurance even after 105 times conductivity switching are observed in a typical Pt/ZrO2/Pt whose ZrO2 film has been deposited at 100 °C and an oxygen pressure of 50 mTorr. The Pt/ZrO2/Pt structure exhibits two ohmic behaviors in the low voltage region (V < 1.4 V) depending on the value of previously applied high voltage and Schottky-type conduction in the high voltage region (1.4 V < V < 8.9 V). It seems that conductivity switching behaviors in our Pt/ZrO2/Pt structure result from the changes in both the Schottky barrier and the bulk conductivity controlled by applied voltages. A Pt/YSZ/Pt capacitor structure has more stable reset voltage and current state than a Pt/ZrO2/Pt capacitor structure. Moreover, a Pt/YSZ/Pt capacitor structure shows higher Conductivity than a Pt/ZrO2/Pt capacitor structure, which may result from substitution of Y3+ ions for Zr4+ ions.</P>

Screening of Interferon Inducer and Its Induction Mechanism

섬유 아세포인 FS-4를 사용하여 $\beta$-인퍼페론 생산에 대한 poly I: poly C 및 다른 여러 물질의 유도 효과를 조사하였다. Superinduction에 의해 생성된 $\beta$-인터페론은 약 9,000 U/ml의 활성을 보였으며 vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV)의 증식을 억제하는 뚜렷한 항 바이러스 성질을 보였다. 또 생성된 인터페론 중 소량을 세포에 미리 처리하면 인터페론의 생성이 증가하는 priming 효과도 관찰되었다, 이때 유도물질 중 poly I: poly C를 변성시켜 처리하면 유도 효과가 감소 했으며 DEAE-dextran과 complex를 만들면 증가하였다. 그러고 항암 작용이 있는 것으로 알려진 천연물의 추출물을 인터폐론 유도에 사용해 보았으나 거의 모두 인터페론을 유도하는 데는 바효과적 이었다. 한편 음성 이온기를 많이 가진 물질중 헤파린을 $100\;{\mu}g/ml$로 세포에 처리한 결과 보통의 초 유도기작 (superinduction)을 통한 인터페론의 생성량보다 3배 정도의 증가를 보였다. The effect of incubation with polyanion materials after stimulation of interferon production and of superinduction on poly I: poly C-induced human foreskin cell cultures, FS-4, was studied. The screening of interferon inducer from natural products was also performed. Under the optimal conditions, superinduction, in which poly I: poly C-DEAE-dextran was used as a interferon inducer, produced about 9,000 units/ml from fully monolayered FS-4 cells(about $10^6$ cells). By the incubation with a polyanion material, heparin, after sequential treatments with cycloheximide and actinomycin D in the superinduction method, interferon yield increased about 3 times more than that of the normal superinduction. The most of the materials from natural products used in our experiments, which were traditionally known as anticancer substances were ineffective to induce $\beta$-interferon. The effect of conformation of poly I: poly C and of priming in the interferon induction was also observed. Priming and native poly I: poly C complexed with DEAE-dextran had improved capacity to induce interferon.

An analysis has been made of the clinical obrservation and computed tomographic finding in 40 cases of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage which were confirmed by SOMATOM Ⅱ. computed tomographic scanner. Computed tomographic scan are very helpful in the diagnosis, prognosis and treatmant of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage. Location of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage has been of more greater value in evaluation of progrosis than any other factors of CT scan finding. Surgical intervention were performed in 15 cases and rest 25 cases were managed conservatively. The result of operative treatment were better than those of medical care.

The authors are reporting a extremely rare case of an embryonal carcinoma which arose in the pineal region of an eleven-year old boy. Surgical biopsy and autopsy performed arid be died about 4 month after the onset of the symptom. His clinical and autopsy findings are described.
