A Novel Method for the Production and Evaluation of Hernia Repair Mesh in an In Vitro Environment

While most hernia mesh researchers use animal models or patient studies to evaluate prostheses, we have developed an in vitro-centric mesh production and examination system to characterize mesh properties that affect the cellular affinity and treatment potential of repair mesh. A loom was designed and constructed, and a feasibility study was conducted on auto-loom woven, degummed silk mesh seeded with murine-derived D1 multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). Meshes of two different pore sizes, 1 mm and 2 mm, were investigated. The seeded meshes were evaluated using a variety of assays to determine cellular metabolic activity, viability, and conformation at time points of 7, 14, and 21 days. The assays showed substantial cell attachment to the mesh at all time points, including penetration of cells into the interior of silk threads. Metabolic activity peaked at Day 14 for both mesh sizes, with a sharp rise in protein production from Day 7 to 14. Based upon the successful production of mesh and acquisition of results from the assays performed, it can be concluded that an in vitro evaluation system for hernia mesh is both possible and likely to produce scientifically relevant results.
A SCROLL OF THE 1748 KOREAN EMBASSY TO JAPAN PRESERVED IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM

The Chosŏn-era Korean embassies to Tokugawa Japan have been under scholarly scrutiny since 1894, but researchers are still probing their cultural, economic, and political impacts, because much is not yet clear. The memorabilia left in the wake of the embassies (scrolls, poetry collections, paintings, festivals) have been largely uncovered, catalogued, and are being analyzed for what they can tell us about elite and popular images of Koreans in Tokugawa Japan. The article introduces an unknown scroll in the possession of the British Museum. The scroll depicts the 1748 Korean Embassy to Edo and possesses unusual amounts of information. Nearly all officials, not just the three envoys, are identified by name and office. The end of the scroll includes three state documents (two from Korea to Japan and one reply) with lists of gifts from the Korean King to the Japanese shōgun and gifts from the envoys to the Japanese shōgun. There is also information on return gifts to Korean officials, a musical program, an equestrian program, and further biographical details on the three envoys and high officials. All of the information is prefaced with a list of past embassies.
Logic of Transcendence: Moral Inversion

Moral inversion derives from the logic of transcendence. Any statement said of whatever is transcendent implies its own negation. Our moral actions and reactions always transcend us as individuals. Morality is personally transcendent, and so moral inversion is implied. Philosophical psychology identifies certain schizo- phrenic characteristics of the minds of morally inverted people. Splitting, doubling and brutalization characterize morally inverted ethical cognition: making decisions based on simple associations with too few categories for reaching a rational con- clusion. Arundhati Roy observes, “Human civilization means nothing to the mon- sters who run the world.” What happens in the minds of the “monsters who run the world”? is described in Isaiah 5:20, and my essay is an analysis of this phenomena.
Histology and immunohistochemistry of the human carotid sinus nerve

The carotid sinus nerve (CSN) is well known as mediating baroreflexes. However, studies of its detailed histological analysis are scant in the literature. Therefore, the current anatomical study sought to better elucidate the microanatomy of the CSN. Ten fresh frozen adult cadavers underwent dissection of the CSN. Then, it was harvested and submitted for histological and immunohistochemical staining. Specimens were all shown to be nerve fibers on histology and immunohistochemistry. We identified tyrosine hydroxylase positive fibers in all CSN specimens. These fibers were always found to be within the CSN and not on its surface i.e., epineurium. Based on our findings, the majority of fibers contained in the CSN are tyrosine positive in nature. Further studies are necessary to understand the true function of this autonomic nerve fibers.
반도체 FAB 시뮬레이션을 위한 딥러닝모델과 시뮬레이션 모델의 통합에 관한 연구

본 연구는 반도체 FAB 시뮬레이션을 위한 딥러닝 모델과 시뮬레이션 모델의 통합에 관한 연구이다. 반도체의 수요가 증가하면서 반도체의 생산량을 높이려는 많은 연구들이 진행되고 있다. 그중에서 시뮬레이션은 복잡하고 긴 프로세스로 이루어진 반도체 공정에 대한 연구들 하기에 적합하며 좋은 결과를 위해선 실제와 비슷한 시뮬레이션 모델이 필요하다. 하지만 공정과 물류가 함께 돌아가는 정합성이 높은 시뮬레이션 모델은 무겁고 시간이 오래걸리는 제약이 존재한다. 본 연구에서는 딥러닝을 이용한 반도체 물류 모델을 통해 정합성이 높으면서도 가벼운 반도체 시뮬레이션 모델을 제안하고자 한다.
