        Physicochemical Properties of Long-term Fermented Kimchi

        Physicochemical properties of commercial long-term fermented kimchies which are widely available in Korea were investigated. The commercial long-term fermented kimchies were fermented almost more than 6 months. Average values for saltiness, pH and acidity of the long-term fermented kimchies were $3.0{\pm}0.5%$, $4.0{\pm}0.2$, and $1.88{\pm}0.76%$, respectively. The long-term fermented kimchi showed similar Leuconostoc sp. and Lactobacillus sp. counts as baechu kimchi ripened properly during fermentation. The amount of Leuconostoc sp. and Lactobacillus sp. of the long-term fermented kimchi were $10^{7\sim8}$ CFU/mL and $10^{4\sim7}$ CFU/mL, respectively. The long-term fermented kimchi showed $0.32{\pm}0.18$ lightness, $1.73{\pm}0.98$ redness, $0.52{\pm}0.31$ yellowness. Long-term fermented kimchi showed higher lightness, redness, yellowness than well-fermented standardized baechu kimchi. Breaking strength of long-term fermented kimchi was higher than that of well-fermented standard baechu kimchi.

      • Autophagy enhancement contributes to the synergistic effect of vitamin D in temozolomide-based glioblastoma chemotherapy

        <P>Temozolomide (TMZ), an alkylating agent, is recommended as the initial treatment for high-grade glioblastoma. TMZ is widely used, but its short half-life and the frequency of tumor resistance limit its therapeutic efficacy. In the present study, the anticancer effect of vitamin D (VD) combined with TMZ upon glioblastoma was determined, and the underlying mechanism of this effect was identified. Through cell viability, clonogenic and wound healing assays, the current study demonstrated that treatment of a C6 glioblastoma cell line with TMZ and VD resulted in significantly increased <I>in vitro</I> antitumor effects compared with either VD or TMZ alone. Autophagy, hypothesized to be the dominant mechanism underlying TMZ-based tumor cell death, was maximally activated in TMZ and VD co-treated C6 cells. This was demonstrated by ultrastructural observations of autophagosomes, increased size and number of microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3) puncta and increased conversion of LC3-I to LC3-II. However, the extent of apoptosis was not significantly different between cells treated with TMZ and VD and those treated with TMZ alone. Addition of the autophagy inhibitor 3-methyladenine markedly inhibited the anticancer effect of TMZ and VD treatment, indicating that the chemosensitizing effect of VD in TMZ-based glioblastoma therapy is generated through enhancement of cytotoxic autophagy. TMZ and VD co-treatment also significantly inhibited tumor progression and prolonged survival duration in rat glioblastoma orthotopic xenograft models when compared with TMZ treatment alone. These <I>in vivo</I> results are concordant with the aforementioned <I>in vitro</I> results, together revealing that the combined use of TMZ and VD exerts synergistic antitumor effects on rat models of glioblastoma and may represent an effective therapeutic strategy.</P>

        Validity of the Specialized Columnar Epithelium as a Diagnostic Criterion of the Short Segment Barrett`s Esophagus

        N/A Objective:In areas where intestinal metaplasia of the stomach is highly prevalent, diagnosing Barrett`s esophagus solely by the presence of specialized columnar epithelium in the distal esophagus may lead to many false positive diagnoses. The aim of this study was to test the validity of the specialized columnar epithelium as a diagnostic criterion of the short segment Barrett꼜 esophagus in Korea. Methods:During routine gastroscopy, the length of columnar-lined esophagus was measured and biopsy samples were taken from the mucosa immediately distal to the squamocolumnar junction. Under light microscopy, alcian blue-positive cells were identified. Results:Prevalence of the specialized columnar epithelium in cases without the columnar-lined esophagus and with the short segment columnar-lined esophagus was 57.1% and 31.2%, respectively (P=0.0281). The specialized columnar epithelium is frequently seen around the cardia in Koreans with or without the columnar-lined esophagus. Conclusions:Simple presence of the specialized columnar epithelium is not a valid criterion for a diagnosis of Barrett긯 esophagus. We propose that both the short segment Barrett꼜 esophagus and the goblet cell metaplasia of the cardia might be grouped together under a title of the specialized columnar epithelium around the gastroesophageal junction as a potential preceding condition of adenocarcinoma around the cardia.

        Fine Control of Multiferroic Features of Nanoscale BiFeO3 Powders Synthesized by Microwave-assisted Solid-State Reaction

        Variations in the multiferroic properties of BiFeO 3 (BFO) powders were investigated with respect to the crystallite size and Gd-doping. Nanoscale BFO powders with an average particle size range of ~ 30–80 nm were synthesized by a solid-state reaction using microwave-assisted heat treatment with Bi(NO 3 ) 3 ·5H 2 0, FeC 2 O 4 ·2H 2 O and Gd(NO 3 ) 3 ·6H 2 O as source precursors supplying Bi, Fe, and Gd, respectively. These were heat-treated at temperatures ranging from 200 to 700 °C. The reaction led to the formation of crystallite powders with a particle size of a few tens of nanometers. It was confi rmed that these samples had multiferroic properties at room temperature, and the value of M s varied signifi cantly from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic and vice versa with the size of the powders. In particular, ferromagnetic and ferroelectric features were observed when the size of the BFO powder was < ~ 30 nm (half of the spin-canted cycle). As the crystallite size was reduced to that corresponding to half of the spin canted cycle, the value of Ms increased by 8.8 times from 1.41 to 12.46 memu/g. Compared to pure BFO, when Gd was doped, Ms values increased by ~ 60% and 240% in ~ 30 nm and ~ 60 nm particle-sized powders.

        The Connection between Hand Washing and Brushing Teeth

        Background: The purpose of this study was to identify the connection between handwashing and toothbrushing, focusing on eating habits, and to verify whether eating habits can be used as an action cue for forming health habits.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study using secondary data from the 2019 community health survey. The participants included 229,099 adults aged 19 years or older, representative of the South Korean people. We employed two dependent variables: one was washing hands, and the other was brushing teeth. Eating habits was a major independent variable. Socioeconomic variables, such as age, gender, income, occupation, economic activity, education, and residence were adjusted as confounders. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to calculate adjusted odds ratio and 95% confidence intervals. Results: Most of the participants had good health behaviors: those who wash their hands and brush their teeth were each approximately 80%. Our finding indicated that brushing teeth and washing hands can be connected with eating habits. After adjusting for confounders, it was found that people who wash their hands before meals (compared to those who did not wash their hands before meals) had a higher toothbrushing rate after meals (i.e., socioeconomic status) (Adjusted Odds Ratio: 2.0, Confidence Intervals: 1.9 to 2.1). Conclusion: Those who practice either washing hands before meals or brushing teeth after meals were found to have a connection between washing hands and brushing teeth based on the results of practicing other health behaviors. This implies that eating habits can be connected as a behavior cue to promote health habits, such as washing hands before meals and brushing teeth after meals.

        진로 교육 측면에 살펴본 무용관련학과의 교육과정 현황과 대안적 방향 탐색

        본 연구는 무용관련학과의 교육과정을 분석하여, 각 대학이 학생의 진로에 보다 적절한 교육서비스를 제공해야 한다는 입장에서 수행되었다. 즉, 대학 무용교육 교과과정의 실태와 그 대안으로서 무용교수자를 양성하기 위한 방향을 모색함으로써 학생들의 진로에 실질적으로 도움을 주는 방향을 탐색하는 것이 목적이다. 이를 위해 전국 43개 무용관련학과 중에서 설립년도, 지역을 고려하여 8개교를 임의표집으로 선정하였고, 특정 기준에 따라 분석하였다. 첫 번째 결과인 교육과정의 실태로는 8개교 무용관련 학과의 교육과정은 거의 동일하였고 이수 학점측면에서 살펴보면 실기과목이 이론과목보다 훨씬 큰 비중을 차지하고 있었다. 이는 대학에서 길러내고 싶은 학생이 전문 무용수인지, 안무가 인지 아니면, 일반인을 대상으로 한 무용지도자 인지 그 구분이 모호하다 것을 의미하고 결국은 진로교육에 개선이 필요하다고 볼 수 있다. 이에 따른 두 번째 결과인 무용교수자 양성 방향 탐색에서 "무용수", "안무가", "무용교수자" 이 세 가지 직업의 최대공약수인 무용교수자의 중요성을 강조하였다. 그러므로 진로교육 측면에서 무용관련학과의 교육과정은 학생의 진로로 "무용교수자"를 공통분모로 삼고, 그 위에 "무용수"나 "안무가"로 심화시켜야 할 것이다. 즉, 대학에서 양성하고자하는 무용교수자 상(像)을 명확히 설정하고, 이에 적절한 이론 및 실기, 그리고 교수법 강좌를 개설한 후, 지속적이며 누가적인 평가로 교육과정에 대한 질관리를 이루어야 할 것이다. This research was focused on that the curriculum of university related dance should provide a better career guide for dance major students. We surveyed 8 sample universities from whole curriculum of 43 universities national-wide. The conclusions were as follows: The first, the curriculum of samples are almost the same not different each other. It means there are not such expertise according to the universities. The second, We suggested that the university aimed to be a dance educator need to supply their student with pedagogical dance methodologies. Three points are emphasized. "What kind of person we are going to make through the whole process of curriculum", "Which contents are more appropriate for achieving that goal", "Are there valid, reliable, and objective assessment". Through these 3 questions the universities conduct dance education more authentic for their students.

        논의가 강조된 일반화학실험이 예비교사의 글쓰기 능력 및 화학개념 이해에 미치는 효과

        The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of argumentation-based general chemistry laboratory on preservice science teachers` chemistry concepts understanding and writing. Five topics about argumentation-based general chemistry laboratory activities were developed using Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) approach. Summary Writing Test, and Chemistry Concepts Test were developed as tools to examine the effects of this approach. Both Argumentation-based general chemistry laboratory activities and traditional general chemistry laboratory activities were implemented for the experimental group (23 students), and traditional general chemistry laboratory activities were implemented for the comparative group (16 students). Results of this study indicated that there were significant differences in both groups` chemistry concepts understanding and summary writing. The experimental group showed significantly higher mean score than comparative group in chemistry concepts understanding and summary writing. In the analysis of the sub-component of Summary Writing, there were no significant difference between both groups in ``Big Idea.`` However, the experimental group gained significantly higher mean score in ``argumentation,`` ``understanding of science concepts,`` and ``rhetoric structure.`` The results showed that argumentation-based general chemistry laboratory programs were effective in achieving chemistry concepts understanding and writing in general chemistry laboratory.
