In order to determine the content of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde (5-HMF) in the Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, 5-HMF was isolated from the EtOAc fraction of the Rehmanniae Radix Preparata samples and identified by spectroscopic and physicochemical evidences. Twenty one samples prepared on the basis of increasing number of stewing times with wine were analyzed by HPLC. From this analysis, it was revealed that the samples processed under one to nine times of stewing showed increasing pattern in 5-HMF contents. And the samples processed under 9 to 18 times of stewing showed 0.53-0.74% in 5-HMF contents. However, for those samples processed more than 19 times, 5-HMF content profile showed decreasing pattern.

Five compounds were isolated from the methanol extract of the tubers of Cyperus rotundus (Cyperaceae). They were identified as cyperol(1), ${\alpha}-cyperone(2)$, cyperotundone(3), sugetriol triacetate(4) and ${\beta}-sitosterol(5)$ on the basis of spectroscopic and physicochemical analysis. Among them, cyperol, ${\alpha}-cyperone$ and cyperotundone were shown inhibitroy effects on LPS-induced nitric oxide production in RAW 264.7 cells in a dose dependent manner.

Seven compounds were isolated from the n-BuOH extract of the dried stem barks of Rhus javanica L. On the basis of physico-chemical, spectroscopic evidences and comparison with authentic samples, the compounds $1{\sim}7$ were identified as gallic acid (1), methyl gallate (2), scopoletin (3), scopolin (4), $1,\;2,\;3,\;4,\;6-penta-O-galloyl-{\beta}-D-glucose$ (5), orcinol (6) and $orcinol-{\beta}-D-glucoside$ (7). Among these compounds, scopolin, $orcinol-{\beta}-D-glucoside$ were isolated from this plant for the first time.

Lithospermi Radix has been used in traditional medicine for antimicrobial, antiinflammatory, immunostimulating, antitumor and wound-healing activities. For the quality control of this drug, acetylshikonin was isolated from the hexane extract of Lithospermum erythrorhizon(Boraginaceae) and identified by the spectroscopic evidences. A quantitative analysis of acetylshikonin using HPLC method showed that the average contents were $0.084{\pm}0.026%$ in 31 samples collected throughout the various regions of Korea.

From the alkaloidal fraction of the fructus of Chelidonium majus, two protoberberine alkaloids and one benzophenanthridine alkaloid were isolated. On the basis of chemical and spectroscopic evidences, the structures of these compounds were identified as chelidonine, coptisine and berberine.

Methanol extracts from 450 plants were screened for muttidrug-resistance reversing activity using drug sensitive KB-3-1 and multidrug-resistant KB-Vl cells. Among them, the extracts of Cynanchum wilfordii, Torilis japonica, Celastrus orbiculatus, Melia toosendan and Teminialia chebula strongly potentiated vinblastine cytotoxicity in KB-Vl cells. But their cytotoxicities to both sensitive KB-3-1 and resistant KB-Vl cells were in the same order of magnitude. These results indicate that the above samples would contain the active principles which do not exert their ativity solely by cytotoxicity.

The effects of evodiamine on monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity were investigated. MAO was purified from mouse brain and the $K_m\;and\;V_{max}$ values of MAO were $78.5{\pm}5.28{\mu}M$ and $0.68{\pm}0.07$ nmol/min/mg protein, respectively (n=4). Evodiamine at $30-120{\mu}M$ showed an inhibitory effect on MAO activity using a substrate kynuramine with an $IC_{50}$ value of $104.2{\mu}M$ (n=4). Evodiamine also exhibited a non-competitive inhibition on MAO. The $K_i$ value for evodiamine was $72.5{\pm}10.8{\mu}M$ (n=4). These results suggest that evodiamine partially contributes to the regulation of monoamine content.

In the course of phytochemical studies of Rumex acetosella L. (Polygonaceae), the MeOH extract of the whole plants was fractionated with $CH_2Cl_2$ and $H_2O$, and the $CH_2Cl_2$ layer was fractionated again with 90% MeOH and hexane. Whereas $H_2O$ layer was fractionated with EtOAc and then with n-BuOH again. By repeated column chromatography, compound 1 was isolated from the 90% MeOH fraction, compounds 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 were from the ethylacetate fraction, and compound 5 was from the n--BuOH fraction. On the basis of physico-chemical, spectroscopic evidences and in comparison with authentic samples, the structures of them were confirmed to emodin, citreorosein, $chrysophanol-8-O-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside$, luteolin and $luteolin-7-O {\beta}-D-glucopyranoside$.

Evodiae Fructus has been used in traditional medicine for the treatment of gastro- intestinal disorders, headache and migraine, and as a cardiotonic and analgesic. For the quality control of this crude drug, evodiamine was isolated from the methylene chloride extract of Evodia officinalis (Rutaceae) and identified by the spectroscopic evidences. A quantitative analysis of evodiamine using HPLC method exhibited that the average contents of evodiamine were $0.84{\pm}0.60%$ in 53 samples collected throughout the various regions of Korea.
