The present study was performed to evaluate the effect of medicinal plant extract on relieving hangovers in mice administered alcohol. The animals were divided into three groups. Each group was treated with fermented plant extract, non-fermented plant extract, or water 30 min after consuming ethanol (2 mL/kg). A locomotor activity test showed that all groups had decreased motor activity until 40 min after plant extract administration. The mice treated with water had lower motor activity until 100 min post-administration. However, the group treated with non-fermented plant extract showed increased motor activity 40 min post-administration, and the higher activity level was maintained until 120 min post-administration. The animals treated with fermented plant extract had a level of motor activity between those of the groups treated with water or non-fermented plant extract. Blood was collected from each mouse 120 min post-administration and aldehyde concentration was measured. The group treated with non-fermented plant extract had a significantly higher (p < 0.05) aldehyde concentration than the other groups. These results demonstrate that the non-fermented medicinal plant extract helped alleviate hangovers 40 min after administration by reducing aldehyde concentrations in the blood.

근년의 고층화된 건축물에 있어서는, 공조설비등의 기계류는 건물의 중간층,상층에 설치되는 일이 많고, 나아가서 건물자체도 유구조화(Soft-structure), 경량화되어 있기 때문에, 기계설치층의 바닥도 종래와 같은 강고한 바닥 구조로 하는 것이 어렵게 되어 있다. 이 때문에 바닥은 진동하기 쉽게 되고, 건물내에 설치되는 기계류에는 보다 효과가 좋은 방진대책이 요구되도록 되어 있다. 본고에서는, 주로 공조기기를 대상으로써 방진의 기본적사항을 해설함과 동시에, 최근 특히 일반화되어가고 있는 2자유도계로써의 방진설계에 있어서의 바닥의 등가질량,등가바네정수에 대한 사고방식을 서술하고, 나아가서 고체음의 전파방지,방진지지된 기기에 대한 내진대책에 대해서도 해설을 시도해 보았다.

Background/Aims: The most important adverse effect of azathioprine (AZA) is bone marrow toxicity (BMT). Many physicians have preferred a gradual dose increment (GDI) policy for the prevention of BMT. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of GDI for the prevention of AZA-induced BMT in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. Methods: The medical records of IBD patients who received AZA in 6 university hospitals were reviewed. The patients were divided into two groups: the GDI group (initial dose <1.5 mg/kg, gradually increased to a therapeutic dose) and the non-GDI group (initial therapeutic dose ≥2 mg/kg). Results: A total of 308 patients were enrolled (male to female ratio, 1:2.3; mean age, 34.91±14.19 years; ulcerative colitis, 43.5%; Crohn`s disease, 55.2%; and intermediate colitis, 1.3%). The overall incidence of BMT was 16.2% (50/308). BMT developed most frequently between fourth to eighth week (26%, 13/50). The rate of BMT of the non-GDI group was significantly higher than that of the GDI group (27.5%, 11/40 vs. 14.6%, 39/268, P=0.038). A multivariate analysis showed that the only factor related to BMT was a non-GDI policy (P=0.036; odds ratio, 2.41; 95% confidence interval, 1.06-5.49). Conclusions: A GDI policy could be useful for reducing AZA-induced BMT in Korean IBD patients. (Intest Res 2012;10:244-250)

Accurate diagnosis of gastric intestinal metaplasia is important; however, conventional endoscopy is known to be an unreliable modality for diagnosing gastric intestinal metaplasia (IM). The aims of the study were to evaluate the interobserver variation in diagnosing IM by high-definition (HD) endoscopy and the diagnostic accuracy of this modality for IM among experienced and inexperienced endoscopists. Selected 50 cases,taken with HD endoscopy, were sent for a diagnostic inquiry of gastric IM through visual inspection to five experienced and five inexperienced endoscopists. The interobserver agreement between endoscopists was evaluated to verify the diagnostic reliability of HD endoscopy in diagnosing IM, and the diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity were evaluated for validity of HD endoscopy in diagnosing IM. Interobserver agreement among the experienced endoscopists was “poor” (κ = 0.38) and it was also “poor’’ (κ = 0.33)among the inexperienced endoscopists. The diagnostic accuracy of the experienced endoscopists was superior to that of the inexperienced endoscopists (P = 0.003). Since diagnosis through visual inspection is unreliable in the diagnosis of IM, all suspicious areas for gastric IM should be considered to be biopsied. Furthermore, endoscopic experience and education are needed to raise the diagnostic accuracy of gastric IM.
