Classifying the types of networks has been a focus of analysis in the recent, small-world research. A unifying theory has been introduced to provide an integrative perspective on the statistical properties of a variety of real-world networks. This theory postulates that the existence of constraints deters the emergence of a scale-free network. For example, the theory argues that the constraints of airport capacity limitthe growth of air traffic, blocking the emergence of a scale-free network.We challenge this argument by reexamining the context of the airline industry. We empirically show that the U. S. airline route network is a scale-free network despite the presence of capacity constraints. We propose a new avenue for future research.
Complexity and Building Block Search: A Historical Account of Drug Discovery

The history of the pharmaceutical industry shows that innovators have searched for new drugs by building upon known, active substances, or what are called “chemical building blocks.” The essence of this search is to test variations of the known chemical building blocks for some desired properties and to select the most effective variant from a collection of related variants. This collection is called a library, which guides and delimits future search. My study suggests that by managing libraries with proper design rules, innovators can sustain their R&D activities with modest risk. This sustainability is proposed as an important component of dynamic capabilities.
AGR2, a mucinous ovarian cancer marker, promotes cell proliferation and migration

Ovarian cancer is a leading cause of death in women. Early detection of ovarian cancer is essential to decrease mortality. However, the early diagnosis of ovarian cancer is difficult due to a lack of clinical symptoms and suitable molecular diagnostic markers. Thus,identification of meaningful tumor biomarkers with potential clinical application is clearly needed. To search for a biomarker for the early detection of ovarian cancer,we identified human anterior gradient 2 (AGR2)from our systematic analysis of paired normal and ovarian tumor tissue cDNA microarray. We noted a marked overexpression of AGR2 mRNA and protein in early stage mucinous ovarian tumors compared to normal ovarian tissues and serous type ovarian tumors by Western blot analysis and immunohistochemistry. To further elucidate the role of AGR2 in ovarian tumorigenesis,stable 2774 human ovarian cancer cell lines overexpressing AGR2 were established. Forced expression of AGR2 in 2774 cells enhanced the growth and migration of ovarian cancer cells. AGR2 protein was detected in the serum of mucinous ovarian cancer patients by Western blot and ELISA analysis. Thus,AGR2 is a potential biomarker for the diagnosis of mucinous ovarian cancer and an ELISA assay may facilitate the early detection of mucinous ovarian cancer using patient serum.

암의 조기진단이 우리가 생각하는 것처럼 간단한 문제는 아니다.우리가 암을 원천적으로 생기지 않도록 예방하는 것이 일차적 예방이라고 한다면 암을 조기진단하는 것은 2차적 예방이라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 암이 진행되어 조기의 치료효과가 불가능해지기 전에 모든 암을 조기발견하는 것이 바람직하다고 생각하지만 그렇게 하는 것이 간단하지는 않다.
