This study has dealt with Korean people and cultures seen through the eyes of a westerner who has lived in Korea for several years teaching English at various organizations or institutions. This study utilized interview techniques that are considered to be the most effective strategies for collecting qualitative data. Unstructured and open-ended interviews were used in this study to secure thick information for the purpose of the study. Through those interview strategies, we could learn much about Jim’s individual experiences and perspectives on Korean people and cultures. As is expected, Jim has had positive and negative experiences in Korea both of which may have affected him to have different kinds of perspectives on Korea. According the findings of this study, the participant has relatively well-adjusted himself to his new life in Korea, but, through his diverse firsthand experiences in Korea, he became to form somewhat negative perceptions of Korean people and cultures. For example, Koreans’ inclination to be emotional in solving interpersonal problems, noisiness, educational officers’ irrational business attitude towards native English speaking teachers, and Koreans’ indifference towards a stranger’s misfortune were all responsible for him to have formed negative perceptions of Korea. The purpose of this study, as with that of any qualitative research, was to describe and understand what the participant reveals, and now we know more about how Korean people and cultures are viewed by a third person’s perspectives. This is one foreign national’s experiences in Korea, and other foreign nationals may have had different experiences in Korea and thus probably different perspectives on some aspects of Korean people and cultures. Nevertheless, it seems to be true that sometimes foreign nationals share similar feelings about things in Korea as a result of their similar experiences, just like, for example, all foreigners Jim had a chat with seemed to agree whole-heartedly on the exaggerated and unrealistic Korean TV commercials on Korea. We will be witnessing more and more foreign nationals in Korea in the future. Understanding a third person’s perspectives on Korea will surely help us broaden our own understanding of ourselves and others, foreign nationals in particular. To a country that heavily dwells on international trade and that wants to be more globalized in many sectors, it is probably not optional to try to understand different perspectives of foreign nationals in and outside of Korea. Understanding other peoples’ different perspectives may be a major important step to leap to more advanced country with global standards. Future research is called for a better understanding of different cultural perspectives, and research with more focus on micro aspects of Korean people and cultures, possibly including foreign nationals and their cultures too, will provide us more detailed and concrete information about different cultural perspectives.
The resource-based view argues that firm performance will be stronger when the resources available to the firm are simultaneously high in revenue enhancing or cost-reducing potential, rareness, and inimitability. However, this central prediction of the resource-based view itself has not been the target of rigorous empirical tests due to inherent methodological challenges. We present a framework to test the central argument by applying the event study method. We discuss the benefits of examining stock price reactions when firms access new resource increments, in particular through international alliances. Empirically, we analyze 225 international codesharing alliance announcements made by 23 international airlines between 1986 and 1998. We show that the market value of a focal firm increases significantly more when the resources available through its international alliance partner are simultaneously high in revenue/cost potential, rare and inimitable, than if the resources are deficient in any of the three characteristics.
In this paper, study of vehicle fire cases caused by connector and power wiring of anti-lock brake system(ABS) module damage is presented. The purpose of ABS module is to improve braking and steering ability under sudden stop of the vehicle by repeatedly activating and releasing the brake with electric signal via electric control unit. The electric control unit for ABS may experience incomplete contact between power line and signal line or electrical breakdown on the printed circuit board by undergoing repetitive signal change which would consequently result in electrical heat and spark, eventually leading to automotive fire. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to provide fundamental data by analyzing connector and power wiring of ABS module damage conducive to the precise investigation on the cause of vehicle fire.
This paper attempts to explain Koreans’ excessive English language anxiety through the examination of the historical peculiarities of the Korea-US relations. As the fate of Korea has been controlled by the hands of the United States several times in the time lines of Korean history, the relationship between the two countries has become a kind of the dominant/the subordinate or the strong/the weak, and it is presumed that the US has become a kind of fear or an object of reverence in the subconscious of Koreans. It is assumed that Koreans’ excessive English language anxiety is attributed to this peculiar and unusual historical relationship. In order to escape from this abnormal situation, Koreans need to be psychologically armed in the first place, trying to put themselves in the same line with native speakers, which is believed to be possible through the development and application of a higher-order thinking system. The psychological armament education of Korean English learners is as important as the English content education, so it is necessary to devote a certain amount of class time to the psychological armament education.(Konyang University)
Fire or electrical problem while DC electric traction vehicle operation caused by various reasons can lead to not only suspension of the operation, but also severe aftermath such as massive casualty. In this paper, fire analysis on DC electric traction vehicle caused by electrical breakdown on line breaker, which is in connection with the power supply, is presented. When the electric arc, the by-product of frequent line breaker operation, is not fully diminished, it leads to electrical breakdown and fire. Especially, electrical breakdown can be easily induced by the open-and-close operation of inner contractor inside line breaker, eventually followed by ground fault and generation of transient current. Electric arc is consequent on the ground fault and acts as possible ignition source, leading to fire. Also, during the repetitive operation of the line breaker, the contactor is separated each other and some copper powder is generated, and the copper powder provided breakdown path, resulting in fire.
