A numerical simulation program based on the finite element method is developed for calculating electromagnetic field of the cylindrical electromagnetic pump. The calculated results by the developed program show that Lorentz forces show maximum peak at an optimum length (Lc) of the induction coil. The value of Lc depends on the radius of the molten metal when the skin depth is large. On the other hand, the value of Lc depends on the skin depth when it is small.

Comparative studies of histopathologic lesions from 23 purified protein derivative (PPD) positive cattle, 21 slaughter cattle found with tuberculosis, and 11 tuberculosis-positive elk (Cervus elaphus) were performed. PPD positive cattle did not show specific histopathologic lesions in all 23 heads that were no visible lesion reactor. Slaughter cattle found with tuberculosis revealed microscopically classical granulomatous lesion (tubercle) with central caseous necrosis surrounded by mantle of epithelioid cells and Langhan's giant cells capsuled by connective tissue in lung. Elk was noted with some different lesion patterns with classical granulomatous lesion and suppurative abscesses that was composed of fibrin, degenerated cells without having connective tissue. In addition, many Langhan's giant cells infiltration in alveoli at peripheral lesion were observed in some cases of classical granulomatous lesion and suppurative abscesses.
공과대학 교양교육 개선 방안 탐구: 서울대학교 사례를 중심으로

한국의 공과대학의 교육 목표는 1) 전공교육의 강화, 2) 팀워크능력, 커뮤니케이션 스킬, 비판적 사고력 등을 포함하는 공과대학 소양의 함양 두 가지로 요약될 수 있다. 이 두 가지 교육 목표를 달성하기 위한 시도로 제안된 것이 공학소양교육이다. 현재 공과대학의 교양교육 개선안에는 전공에 구애받지 않는 보편적 교양교육을 강조하고 있는 미국형과 일반 교양교육과 구분되는 공학소양교육의 필요성을 강조하는 한국공학교육인증원형으로 구분된다. 본 연구는 한국공학교육인증원의 공학소양교육과정을 교육과정 개편에 적용한 서울대학교 공과대학의 교양 교육과정 개편 내용과 그 의미를 탐색하였다. 이 논문에 제시된 서울대학교 공과대학 교양교육 개선안은 교양교육의 학점 중 학생들의 자유선택 과목의 비중을 줄이고, 공학소양교육으로 이수하게 하는 방안을 포함하고 있다. 이 방안은 전공에 구애받지 않는 공통적 교양교육의 틀을 지키면서 전공과 단과대 학의 특성을 반영하는 전공소양형 교양교육을 강조 하는 현실적 방안으로 평가될 수 있다. Engineering Colleges in Korea have two educational objectives: 1) strengthening of speciality 2) cultivation of the engineering literacy such as the ability of working together, the ability of communication and creative thinking. In order to achieving these objectives, Engineering Literacy education was originated. The improvable proposal of general education course of engineering college is divided into two parts. One is American type that emphasizes on the general education independently of major. The other is Korean ABEEK s type that attach importance to engineering literacy. This study researches the case of Seoul National University that applied ABEEK s engineering literacy on redesigning the curriculum. To redesign the curriculum, college of engineering, Seoul National University reduced the optional courses in general education and had the students complete the engineering literacy. This device is effective, because it is able to keep the universal general education and make the most of major s characteristics.

In the RH process, it is possible to obtain quicker processing times by enhancing the decarburization rates at a low carbon range of steel melt through Ar gas injection into the vacuum vessel. The RH decarburization reaction was simulated through a dissolved oxygen removal reaction by injecting nitrogen into a 1/8 scale RH water model system. The gas nozzles for the N2 injection into the vacuum vessel were located at the lowest level of the vessel`s outer wall. The nitrogen bubbling in the vacuum vessel resulted in an increase in the reaction rate constant, which rose in accordance with an increase in the bubbling flow rate and number of nozzles used. However, there was almost no variation in the reaction rate constant, which depended on the horizontal positions of the bubbling nozzles.

In this study, we explored the factors related with preference for and participation in science-related activities of elementary school students. We developed a questionnaire to measure the characteristics of students such as motivation toward science learning, science aspiration, family science orientation, parental educational level and occupation, and the degrees of preference and participation of science-related activities. The questionnaire was administered to about 400 fourth graders in Seoul. The results revealed that the students with higher motivation toward science learning and/or science aspiration preferred and participated more in most activities. It was also found that parental educational level and occupation did not make an appreciable difference in preference and participation. The students who perceived their parents to be science-oriented, however, preferred and participated more in most activities. These results may offer practical implications for effective uses of both school and out-of-school science activities in elementary science education.

In this study, we investigated science-related activities in everyday life perceived by elementary school students, and their preference and participation in the activities. We also analyzed the differences by student`s gender and interest in science. We developed a questionnaire of what activities elementary school students participated in daily experiences and how they perceived the connections of the activities with science. The questionnaire that was asked to rate the degrees of science-relatedness, preference, and participation of 35 activities was administered to fifth graders. The analysis of the results revealed that they perceived various everyday activities in their home and community as well as school were related to science. They generally preferred and participated in the activities. Boys perceived some activities, such as building things with magnets, Legos, or other toy and tools, more closely related to science, and the degrees of their preference and participation in these activities were higher than those of girls. It was also found that the students who were more interested in science not only perceived more activities related to science but also preferred and participated in the activities more. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.
