Lean burn GDI(Gasoline Direct Injection) engine have been studied for a long time because of its good fuel economy. However, NOx emissions of the lean burn GDI engines are considered as one of unsolved technical issues. The aim of this study was to show the feasibility of EGR and LNT for NOx reduction of the lean burn GDI engine. This study shows that EGR was a effective method for NOx reduction, but EGR rate should be determined by considering combustion stability and fuel consumption rate. Additionally, this study shows the LNT control methods. The effects of lean/rich duration on NOx reduction characteristics were investigated in this study.
