A mobile emission laboratory (MEL) was designed to measure the amount of traffic pollutants, with high temporal and spatial resolution under real conditions. Equipment for the gas-phase measurements of CO, NOx, CO₂, and THC and for the measurement of the number, concentration, and size distribution of fine and ultra-fine particles by an FMPS and CPC was placed in a minivan. The exhausts of different types of vehicles can be sampled by an MEL. This paper describes the technical details of the MEL and presents data from the experiment in which a car chases passenger vehicles fuelled by diesel and gasoline. The particle number concentration in the exhaust of the diesel vehicle was higher than that of the gasoline vehicle. However, the diesel vehicle with a DPF emitted fewer particles than the vehicle equipped with a gasoline direct injection engine, with particle diameters over 50 nm.

The vast stores of biomass available in the worldwide have the potential to displace significant amounts of fuels that are currently derived from petroleum sources. Fast pyrolysis of biomass is one of possible paths by which we can convert biomass to higher value products. The wood pyrolysis oil (WPO) have been regarded as an alternative fuel for petroleum fuels to be used in diesel engine. However, the use of WPO in a diesel engine requires modifications due to low energy density, high water contents, low acidity, and high viscosity of the WPO. One possible method by which the shortcomings may be circumvented is to cofire WPO with other petroleum fuels. WPO has poor miscibility with light petroleum fuel oils, the most suitable candidates fuels for direct fuel mixing are methanol or ethanol. Early mixing with methanol or ethanol has the added benefit of significantly improving the storage and handling properties of the pyrolysis oil. For separate injection cofiring, conventional diesel fuels can be fired together with WPO-ethanol blended fuels in a dual-injection diesel engine. In this study, performance and emission characteristics of a dual-injection diesel engine were examined. Results showed that although stable engine operation was possible with dual-fuel combustion, the fuel conversion efficiency was slightly decreased due to high water contents of pyrolysis oil. Regarding to exhaust emissions, NOx and soot emissions were significantly decreased.

Biogas can be obtained from biogenic materials through an anaerobic digestion process. Since biogas has low calorific value and its composition significantly varies, appropriate combustion strategies need to be established to obtain stable combustion in engine applications. In this study, efforts have been made to investigate the effects of inert gas composition variations on engine performance and emissions. Results show that the MBT spark timing was advanced and NOx was reduced as the inert gas in the biogas rose. Moreover, NOx emission drop in CO₂ diluted biogas was more significant than that of N₂ due to higher heat capacity of CO₂ while THC emissions showed the opposite tendency. Thermal efficiency was increased in N₂ case with elevation of N₂ due to the decreased heat loss and PMEP. However, there is no difference in CO₂ case because of deteriorated flame propagation speed.
