Typhoid fever is an acute systemic febrile disease caused by Salmonella Typhi, characterized by persistent fever, headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea and rose spots. Salmonella infection can lead to diffuse organ involvement including bone, lung, thyroid, kidney, liver, spleen, heart, intestine and skin. While a variety of complications may be seen in typhoid fever, sensorineural hearing loss or pancreatitis has been rarely observed. Recently, we experienced a case of typhoid fever complicated by sensorineural hearing loss, acute pancreatitis and hepatitis in a 21-year-old female patient, who was improved with ceftriaxone and ciprofloxacin administration and supportive care. We report this case with a review of the literature.

It is stated in many reports that the most frequent cause among abdominal masses in fetus and neonates is congenital renal lesion including hydronephrosis and multicystic kidneys. Other causes are masses originated from gastrointestinal tract, retroperitoneum, or female genital tract. Which almost are benign but about 2% of cases have malignant course. Benign cytic peritoneal mesotheliomas are tumors of peritoneum characterized by thin-walled cyst lined by benign mesothelial cells. Despite the marked tendency to occur, no malignant degeneration or metastasis was reported. It occurs predominantly in females of reproductive age and is rare in male. We experienced a case of male fetus with a huge abdominal mass and severe secondary hydronephrosis which result to be a benign cytic peritoneal mesothelioma, a rare entity in male fetus and rarer in fetal period

Colorectal cancer consists of 8.2 percent of all malignancy in korea, and shows more increaing tendency. Despite the advances in the detection of calorectal cancer no single screening technique has achieved both high degree of diagnostic accuracy and minimal patient morbidity. We studied 24 patients, who underwent colonoscopy, with clinical suspicious colon cancer at Presbyterian Medical Center between Jan and Sep.1995, and evaluated the diagnostic feasibility of colon lavage cytology using oral cleansing solution. The results were as follows; 1) Colorectal cancer(adenocarcinoma) was detected in 19 of 24 cases by colonoscopic biopsy and only one patient who 'was not approached to the lesion site because of abdominal pain during colonoscopy, was detected colon cancer by explo-laparotomy. 2) In the 20 cases of colorectal cancer, colon lavage cytology revealed dysplastic cells in 1 case, and adenocarcinoma cells in 6 cases, so, the sensitivity of colon lavage cytology is 35 percent. 3) The location of the cancer was follow:Five ascending colon, two transverse colon, five sigmoid colon, and eight rectum and the 7 cases showing positive colon lavage cytology was fallow: two ascending colon, one transverse colon, one sigmoid colon, three rectum. 4) The colectomy was performed in the 17 cases(Dukes' B: five, C: twelve). The Dukes' classification of the 7 case showing positive colon lavage cytology is two in Dukes' B, four in Dukes' C, and one in Dukes' D. In conclusion, we think the cytologic study of colon lavage fluid might be considered as one of the noninvasive diagnostic tools in colorectal cancer, if it's sensitivity improved, epecially, incomplete retrograde cecal intubation, or refusal colonoscopy, and ulcerative colitis combined with colon cancer.
지속성 외래 복막 투석 환자에서 복합균 복막염과 병발한 Fysarium species 복막염 1예

New techniques in CAPD connection and catheter implantation have been introduced to CAPD patient and may have contributed reduction of peritonitis in- cidence, but peritonitis is a frequent cause of morbidity and mortality during continuous ambulatory peritoneal dislysis(CAPD). Although still uncommon, fungal peritonitis is gaining in importance because of its increasing frequency and its difficulty in management. Although Candidae are the commonest fungi isolated, other opportunistic pathogens have been reported as well. We experienced a case of Fusarium peritonitis combined with polymicrobial peritonitis during CAPD in a 36 year-old man. Fungus culture with peritoneal drainage fluid revealed rapidly growing(1 3 days) greyish, white pink cottony colony in potato dextrose agar at room temperature. There was light yellow pigments on the reverse. Microscopically, elongated, multicelled(l 3 cells), sickle shaped macroconidia and small, oval to cylindrical microconidia was observed on wet smear, Gram stain and lactophenol cotton blue stain, consistent with Fusarium species. So we report this case with s review of the literature.
