The influence of valium and phenobarbital on the development and restitution of the gastric epithelial injury in rats exposed to restraint stress was investigated. In four random groups of rats arbitrarily given valium and phenobarbital, respectively, in low(2mg/Kg), and high(10mg/Kg) doses 30 minutes prior to stress. The prevention of gastric ulcer development by valium and phenobarbital may be the result of their augmentation of stress tolerance, probably due to its phenobarbital may be the result of their augmentation of stress tolerance, probably due to its central neurodepressant effect and gastric secretory influence and tonus of the gastrointestinal musculature during severe stress. Three to five days were required for restitution of injured mucosa. This study demonstrates that valium and phenobarbital were effective in preventing gastric mucosal ulcers and bleeding in rats treated with restraint stress, but there in no evidence of healing effect of these drugs.
