A liquid‐crystalline blue‐phase laser with a tunable photonic bandgap (PBG) of over 150 nm and a wide temperature range is demonstrated by Myoung Hoon Song and Suk‐Won Choi on p. 3002. A lasing peak shift of more than 100 nm is realized due to the large PBG shift of the liquid‐crystalline blue phase. The shift in the lasing wavelength was reversible during repeated temperature changes over the entire stability range of the liquid‐crystalline cubic blue phase.

The transient and rapid expression system of a foreign protein in planta is a very useful technique in biotechnology application. We have investigated optimum condition of Agrobacterium-infiltration technique in which expression level of foreign proteins were maximized without detrimental effects on plants using GFP and Cucumber mosaic virus 2b protein, which is known as an enhancer of gene expression and a suppressor of post-transcriptional gene silencing(PTGS). The optimum expression level of both RNA and protein of GFP with minimum leaf impairment was obtained at $OD_{600}$=0.2 of Agrobactrium inocula. The steady-state levels of GFP RNA and protein generally peaked at 3 and 7 days post-infiltration(dpi), respectively. In the presence of 2b, both the magnitude and duration of GFP expression was highly increased and we could detect GFP level until 17 dpi. On the other hands, the 2b-mediated higher accumulation of foreign proteins resulted in the repression of normal leaf growth, possibly due to the limitation of supply of energy or materials required for growth maintenance. Using this Agrobacterium-infiltration system with 2b and GFP, we tested a hypothesis for the threshold model of PTGS initiation. Four GFP transgenic lines of N. benthamiana, which shows different expression level of GFP were tested to determine the threshold level for PTGS initiation. Agrobacterium-infiltration of GFP into those GFP-transgenic plants resulted in the co-silencing of the transgenic GFP. It was found that very low concentration of Agrobacterium with GFP and GFP+2b($OD_{600}$=0.002-0.02) which could not phenotypically induce an additive GFP expression, was enough to trigger PTGS pathway in all GFP transgenic plants. This strongly indicates that each GFP-transgenic plant should be expressing the transgenic GFP at its own pre-determined level and there was no buffer zone of additive GFP-expression to the threshold. In other words, the PTGS seems to be immediately activated as a self-defensive mechanism if an internal balance of gene expression is broken.
Charge/Discharge and Electrochemical Characteristics of Secondary Lithium/Pyrite Battery
Choi, Jae Won,Kim, Jong Uk,Ryu, Ho Suk,Ahn, Hyo Jun,Ahn, Jou Hyeon Trans Tech Publications, Ltd. 2006 Materials science forum Vol.510 No.-

Iron disulfide (FeS2) is attractive as a positive electrode material in lithium batteries because of its low material cost, environmental non-toxicity, and high specific energy density. Furthermore, natural pyrite is a secondary product of the mining extraction of coal. For these reasons, natural and synthetic pyrites have been proposed as active cathode materials in secondary lithium batteries. We investigated the effect of various solvents on the electrochemical properties of lithium-FeS2 batteries. The specific discharge capacity of Li/FeS2 cells varied from 500 to 780mAh/g based on FeS2.

Root Hair-Specific EXPANSIN B Genes Have Been Selected for Graminaceae Root Hairs
Won, Su-Kyung,Choi, Sang-Bong,Kumari, Simple,Cho, Mi-Suk,Lee, Sang-Ho,Cho, Hyung-Taeg Korean Society for Molecular and Cellular Biology 2010 Molecules and cells Vol.30 No.4
Cell differentiation ultimately relies on the regulation of cell type-specific genes. For a root hair cell to undergo morphogenesis, diverse cellular processes including cell-wall loosening must occur in a root hair cell-specific manner. Previously, we identified and characterized root hair-specific cis-elements (RHE) from the genes encoding the cell wall-loosening protein EXPANSIN A (EXPA) which functions preferentially on dicot cell walls. This study reports two root hair-specific grass EXPB genes that contain RHEs. These genes are thought to encode proteins that function more efficiently on grass cell walls. The proximal promoter regions of two orthologous EXPB genes from rice (Oryza sativa; OsEXPB5) and barley (Hordeum vulgare; HvEXPB1) included RHE motifs. These promoters could direct root hair-specific expression of green fluorescent protein (GFP) in the roots of rice and Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). Promoter deletion analyses demonstrated that the RHE motifs are necessary for root hairspecific expression of these EXPB promoters. Phylogenetic analysis of EXP protein sequences indicated that grass EXPBs are the only orthologs to these root hairspecific EXPBs, separating dicot EXPBs to distal branches of the tree. These results suggest that RHE-containing root hair-specific EXPB genes have evolved for grass-specific cell wall modification during root hair morphogenesis.

Purpose: The prognosis of patients with liver metastasis from gastric cancer is poor and the optimal treatment remains undetermined. This study identified prognostic factors for survival of patients with metachronous liver metastasis with no other metastatic site after gastrectomy for primary gastric cancer. We also evaluated the clinical impact of hepatic resection. Methods: Between 1997 and 2013, 19,588 curative gastrectomies for gastric adenocarcinoma were performed and 52 patients were diagnosed with metastasis to only the liver. We retrospectively analyzed the clinicopathologic factors of these patients. Results: The median time from gastrectomy to diagnosis of liver metastasis was 16 months (range, 1?65 months). Median survival time after the diagnosis of liver metastasis was 13 months (range, 3?64 months). The 1-year, 2-year, and 3-year patient survival rates after diagnosis of liver metastasis were 53.8%, 26.6%, and 19.9%, respectively. Twelve patients (23%) underwent liver resection for liver metastasis. The 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year overall survival rates were 92%, 42%, and 42% in the hepatic resection group and 43%, 13%, and 7% in the non-hepatic resection group (P=0.002). Multivariate analysis showed that hepatic resection, pathologic stage I and II of the primary tumor, and intestinal type in Lauren classification were predisposing factors for patient survival. Conclusion: Liver resection for resectable metachronous liver metastasis diagnosed after curative gastrectomy increases survival in patients with pathologic stage I or II and intestinal type in Lauren classification for the primary tumor.
