      • 다발성 골수종에서 저용량 thalidomide, cyclophosphamide, dexamethasone (TCD) 요법의 효과

        Background and Objectives : The immunomodulatory drug thalidomide can inhibit angiogenesis and induce apoptosis in experimental models. It can also induce marked and durable response in newly diagnosed myeloma patients. Thalidomide has been used at doses ranging from 200 to 800 mg with significant toxicity. No data are available on the impact of low-dose thalidomide, cyclophosphamide and dexamethasone as initial therapy for myeloma patients. Design and Methods : To address this issue, newly diagnosed myeloma patients were treated with 50 mg/day thalidomide continuously and cyclophosphamide 150 mg/m², days 1-4 and dexamethasone 20 mg/m², days 1-5 and day 15-19, every month. Between October 2005 and October 2006, 14 patients (median age 54.5 years) were treated with low-dose thalidomide, cyclophosphamide and dexamethasone. Results : After a minimum of two cycles of treatment, 5 patients (55.5%) showed a partial remission. After four cycles of treatment, 10 patients (83.3%) showed a partial remission (n=6) and complete remission (n=4). After a median follow-up of 15.4 months, 1 year overall survival rate was 82.0%. Thalidomide was well tolerated without serious toxic effects. Conclusions : The combination of low-dose thalidomide, cyclophosphamide and dexamethasone demonstrates favorable response rate and 1 year overall survival rate in newly diagnosed myeloma. Severe toxicities were not seen with this combination.

      • 흑연-메소페이스핏치 복합재료의 열이방성

        In the development of thermal anisotropic materials with natural graphite powder and pitches as raw materials, extruding and hot-press method were investigated. Pitches should be reformed to mesophase pitch precursor by thermal pretreatment for using as a binder, and the heating rate was recommended within 0.2℃/min in the carbonization process. The tensile strength of axial direction of all specimens was about three times larger than that of radial direction and it could be increased about 25-60% by adding 1% chopped carbon fiber. The thermal expansion coefficient of axial direction was about 1/3-1/5 than that of radial direction and the thermal expansion was repressed by adding carbon fiber. The thermal conductivity of carbon fiber added specimens was increased with increasing the temperature, while that of without carbon fiber was decreased. The thermal conductivity of axial direction was about 8.0-4.58 times larger than that of radial direction by adding carbon fiber in the range of 0-400℃. As a general, properties of hot-pressed specimens were better than those of extruded specimens.

        Pilomatricoma was histopathologically diagnosed in a 2.5-year-old male Alaskan malamute. The patient was referred to Chungnam National University, Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital with solitary, firm and well-circumscribed mass at shoulder. Grossly, the mass was dome shaped to tumor like and 10 x 8 x 5㎝ in size. Some lesions had gritty or bony consistency and was chalky when sectioned Histopathologic feature included mumerous clusters of tightly arranged, basaloid cells with evenly distributed chromatin and ghost cells were characterized by a central unstained zone. The ghost cells often become calcified and osseous metaplasia was also present.

        This paper presents design process of ultra-high-speed motor for electric turbo charger considering mechanical stiffness. As the rotational speed of the motor increases, the stress of the rotor increases proportionally to the square of the rotational speed. Therefore, the design is carried out in consideration of not only electrical characteristics but also the mechanical stiffness and of the motor. In this paper, we proceed with the design of the ring type SPMSM with can for electric turbo charger using the following method. First, stress equations based on the radius of the rotor is derived from the equilibrium equations. Then limitation of the outer diameter of a rotor in consideration of stiffness is determined. And then rest of design variables are determined considering electrical characteristics of the motor.

      • A Simple and Practical Voltage Balance Method for a Solid-State Transformer using Cascaded H-bridge Converters

        In this paper, a simple voltage balance method for a SST using cascaded H-bridge converters is proposed to reduce the voltage difference of H-bridge converters. The tolerance of DAB converter’s passive components in each secondary stage causes the unbalance problem of output voltage in primary side H-bridge converter. In order to reduce the voltage difference of H-bridge converters, the additional voltage balance controller is merged in DAB converter’s voltage controller. By using the proposed voltage balance controller, the modified phase shift angle is applied for each DAB converters. Due to the proposed control methods, the dc-link voltage through each H-bridge converters can be balanced. Compared to the conventional methods, the proposed balance method does not require the additional current sensors for voltage balance control. The design and performance of the proposed SST are verified by experimental results using a 5kW prototype.

      • Limiting Dilution Assay를 이용한 Long-term Culture-Initiating Cells의 정량

        연구배경: LTC-IC는 5주간의 장기액상배양 후에도 집락을 형성할 수 있는 세포를 말하며 조혈모세포의 이식능을 가장 잘 대변할 수 있는 세포이다. 본 연구에서는 Limiting Dilution Assay를 통해 LTC-IC를 정량하고자 하였다. 대상 및 방법: 제대혈, 가동화된 말초혈 및 골수형을 대상으로 일정수의 단핵구에 포함된 CD34^(+) 세포수, CD34^(+)/38- 세포수, 단기배양시 형성된 집락의 수 및 LTC-IC의 수를 구하였다. LTC-IC의 수는 96-well plate에서의 장기액상배양 및 Poisson 분포를 이용한 limiting dilution assay를 이용하였다. 결과: 10^(5)개의 단핵구에 포함된 CD34^(+) 세포, CD34^(+)/38^(-) 세포수는 제대혈에서 960±493, 43.0±20.0, 가동화된 말초혈에서 720±432, 42.5±18.8, 골수혈에서 2,505±805, 805±305였고, CFU-GM의 수는 제대혈에서 24.6±9.9, 가동화된 말초혈에서 20.7±13.0이었고, LTC-IC의 수는 제대혈에서 10.4±5.7, 가동화된 말초혈에서 5.8±5.3, 골수혈에서 13.9±4.2였다. 결론: 96-well plate에서의 장기액상배양 및 Poisson 분포를 이용한 limiting dilution assay를 이용하여 성공적으로 LTC-IC의 수를 정량하였고 이를 통해 이식후의 장기생착능에 대한 정보를 얻을수 있다. Background: Long-term culture-initiating cells(LTC-IC) are defined as those cells responsible for the presence of clonogenic progenitors in 5-week-old long-term culture. LTC-IC are the best available approximation of stem cells in human. we compared the number of LTC-IC in cord blood(CB), mobilized peripheral blood(PB), and bone marrow(BM) using limiting dilution assay(LDA). Methods: Samples were obtained from CB, mobilized PB, and BM. Mononuclear cells(MNC) and CD34^(+) cells were separated by ficoll-hypaque centrifugation and method using immunomagnetic beads, respectively. Flow cytometric analysis was done for determination of CD34^(+) and CD34^(+)/38 cells. Clonogenic progenitors were assayed in methylcellulose media. For LDA, MNCs or CD 34^(+) cells were seeded onto irradiated murine stromal feeder layer in 96-well plate at 3~5 different cell concentrations. Wells that did not contain cobblestone area after 5 weeks of culture were counted and the number of LTC-IC was determined using Poisson distribution. Results: The number of CD34^(+) and CD34^(+)/38^(+) cells per 10^(5) MNCs in CB, PB, and BM were 960±493, 43.0±20.0, 720±432, 42.5±18.8, and 2,505±805, 805±305, respectively. The number of CFU-GM per 10^(5) MNCs in CB and PB were 24.6±9.9 and 20.7±13.0, respectively. The number of LTC-IC per 10^(5) MNCs in CB, PB, and BM were 10.4±5.7, 5.8±5.3, and 13.9±4.2, respectively. Conclusion: In this report, we successfully determined LTC-IC frequencies using LDA with long-term culture system. Determination of LTC-IC frequencies is useful for measurement of long-term in vivo repopulating potential.

      • 고융점희유금속의저온소결방법

        This study looks at crystallization and sintering behavior in B2O3 containing Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 glass powder. The sintered sample was produced with glass powders measuring 44 μm. The relative density and transmittance of the sintered samples showed the highest value at the temperature of 650°C. At temperatures higher than 650°C, crystal growth occurred to decrease the densification of B2O3-Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 (BLAS) glass powder. The main crystalline phase in the glass powder was a-spodumene. From non-isothermal differential thermal analysis, the crystallization of particles (Φ=44 μm) was observed at 640°C to 684°C with respect to the heating rate. The activation energy of crystallization (E(C)) and the Avrami constant (n) calculated by Kissinger and Ozawa equations indicated that the surface and the bulk crystallization occurred simultaneously in the glass. The optimum sintering temperature of this glass powder was 650°C without crystal growth of β-spodumene, although nucleation or nano-crystal growth occurred.

      • Analysis of Improved Efficiency of InGaN Light-Emitting Diode With Bottom Photonic Crystal Fabricated by Anodized Aluminum Oxidxe

        <P>The improved performance of a bottom photonic crystal (PC) light-emitting diode (LED) is analyzed based on internal quantum efficiency (η<SUB>int</SUB>) and light-extraction efficiency (η<SUB>ex</SUB>). The bottom PC is fabricated by anodized aluminum oxide nanopatterns and InGaN quantum wells (QWs) are grown over it. Transmission electron microscopy images reveal that threading dislocations are blocked at the nanometer-sized air holes, resulting in improved optical emission efficiency of the QWs. From temperature-dependent photoluminescence measurements, the enhancement of η<SUB>int</SUB> is estimated to be 12%. Moreover, the enhancement of η<SUB>ex</SUB> is simulated to be 7% by the finite-difference time-domain method. The fabricated bottom PC LED shows a 23% higher optical power than a reference, which is close to the summation of enhancements in η<SUB>int</SUB> and η<SUB>ex</SUB>. Therefore, the bottom PC improves LED performance through higher optical quality of QWs as well as increased light extraction.</P> <B>Graphic Abstract</B> <P>A bottom photonic crystal (PC) is fabricated by anodized aluminum oxide nanopatterns to reduce threading dislocations in InGaN quantum wells grown over the PC (see image).       • Review of 67 Patients With Autoimmune Pancreatitis in Korea: A Multicenter Nationwide Study

        OBJECTIVES:: The ideal diagnostic criteria of autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) are still challenging. Therefore, we investigated the clinical features of AIP in Korea and assessed the clinical use of new Korean diagnostic criteria. METHODS:: We reviewed 67 patients with AIP enrolled in 16 hospitals via a multicenter study. The diagnosis was confirmed according to the Korean diagnostic criteria that included pancreatic imaging, laboratory findings, histopathology, and response to steroid. RESULTS:: Mean age of the patients was 56 years, and 73% were men. Obstructive jaundice (52%) was the most common symptom, and 14 patients (21%) had other organ involvement. Fifty-four patients (81%) revealed diffuse swelling of the pancreas. Either immunoglobulin (Ig)G or IgG4 was elevated in 76%. According to the Korean criteria, 65 patients had definite diagnostic criteria, and 2 patients had probable criteria. Fifteen patients were fulfilled with image, serological, and histopathologic criteria, and 4 patients could be diagnosed with image and steroid responsiveness. Ten patients experienced recurrent attacks of AIP during the mean 20-month follow-up. CONCLUSIONS:: Among 67 cases of AIP, either IgG or IgG4 was elevated in 76% of patients, and 14 patients (21%) had other organ involvement. New Korean diagnostic criteria are useful for diagnosis of AIP.
