<P>Coniferyl aldehyde (1) is previously reported as a potent inducer of heat shock factor 1 (HSF1). Here, we further examined the active pharmacophore of 1 for activation of HSF1 using the derivatives coniferyl alcohol (2), 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylpropanal (3), and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylpropanol (4). Both 1 and 2 resulted in increased survival days after a lethal radiation (IR) dose. The decrease in bone marrow (BM) cellularity and Ki67-positive BM cells by IR was also significantly restored by 1 or 2 in mice. These results suggested that the vinyl moiety of 1 and 2 is necessary for inducing HSF1, which may be useful for developing small molecules for cytoprotection of normal cells against damage by cytotoxic drugs and radiation.</P>

A 60-year-old man was admitted to our hospital complaining of fever with chillness and anarexia for 12 weeks. Physical examination revealed supraclavicular lymphadenopathy and left inguinal lymphadenopathy. Abdominal CT scan showed the evidence of maked lymphadenopathy on retraperitoneal, external iliac, obturator, left inguinal, and celiac lymph nodes. A pathologic diagnosis of Ki-1(+) lymphoma was made by the biopsed supraclavicular lymph node because the node consisted of large cells with pleomorphic nuclei, scanty cytoplasm, large basophilic nucleoli, atypical vacuoli and large cells were positive for leukocyte common antigen, Ber-H2, marker, and B-cell marker.

<P>Concurrent chemotherapy with radiotherapy (CCRT) has been applied for the treatment of advanced stage of head and neck cancer patients. However CCRT is associated with several complications including mucositis, dermatitis, stomatitis, etc. This study was conducted to evaluate the therapeutic effect of systemically administrated recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF) in CCRT-induced oral mucositis in a mouse model. Oral mucositis was induced in male BALB/c mice through combination treatment with cisplatin (11 mg/kg, i.p.) and irradiation (17 Gy) of the head and neck area. rhEGF (1.0 mg/kg/day for consecutive 3 days) was administered systemically, and the therapeutic effect was determined by histological evaluation of the oral mucosa. To elucidate optimal dose of rhEGF on CCRT-induced mucositis, various concentrations (0.04–3 mg/kg) of rhEGF were injected for 3 days. Systemic rhEGF administration accelerated the recovery of body weight. Histologically, rhEGF-treated mice showed significantly increased epithelial cell layer thickness, basal cell number, and expression of Ki-67 compared to control mice. Most effective dose was 1 mg/kg among other doses tested. Systemic administration of 1 mg/kg of rhEGF reduces the severity of oral mucositis induced by CCRT in a mouse model, suggesting that rhEGF can be used for treating CCRT-induced mucositis during the cancer treatment.</P>

The thermal stability of curdlan suspension was investigated. Also curdlan gel containing hydrophobic materials (DHA(Docosa hexaenoic acid), olive oil and Dong-chunghacho (Militaris)) were prepared. Curdlan suspension prepared under 40℃ and 15000rpm was stable for 1 hour. Curdlan gel, including hydrophobic material were dried at 30℃ and swollen in the water. Curdlan gel including Dongchunghacho absorbed water of 980%.

This paper refered to the managerial organization for school physical education. But reports of this type of study have apparently not been published to date. Then in this paper it was indicated that the managerial organization should be discussed from three view points; (1) correlation between the school organization and managerial organization for physical education. (2) contingency theory. (3) motivational approach. The purposes of this paper. therefore, were to clarify the structure of the organizational climate and to analysis the relation between the organizational climate and the effectiveness of managerial organization. The survey was conducted at 7 primary school and 6 junior high school by questionnaire, and the subjects were 312 teachers. The summary of the results were: 1) The organizational climate of a school was consisted of six clements as follow: Maintenance, Cooperation, Task Achievement Job efficiency, Disengagement. Hindrance. These elements were integrated two dimensions that were HUMA-SYSTEM and TECHNICAL-SYSTEM. 2) The correlation between the organizational climate and Integration-Latency function of the managerial organization was significant high. Especially the organizational identification of the managerial organization was significant high. Especially the organizational identification which was one of the effectiveness variables was influenced most strongly by HUMAN and TECHNICAL-SYSTEM dimensions. 3) The positive attitude toward physical education services of teachers created innovation of management for physical education.

Liver and serum rhodanese activities were determined in acute ethanol intoxicated rats with extrahepatic cholestasis induced by common bile duct ligation (CBD) to manifest the biochemical background of alcohol drinking hazard under the hepatobiliary disease. Liver cytosolic and microsomal rhodanese activities and these Vmax values in CBD ligated rats with acute ethanol intoxication were found to be decreased much more than that in CBD ligation alone. However, the difference of Km value on above hepatic enzyme was not found between the experimental groups. On the other hand, serum rhodanese activity in CBD ligated rats with acute ethanol intoxication was greater increased more than that in CBD ligation alone. These results indicate that the biosynthesis of the hepatic rhodanese decreases and the serum rhodanese activity increases in cholestasis combined with acute ethanol intoxication. reflecting damage of aggravated hapatocytic membrane. Accordingly, the resulting data supported the fact that alcoholic drinks were enzymologically harmful to the hepatobiliary disease.

Heterotopic ossification is frequent complication in patients with spinal cord or brain injury, although the etiology is unknown. The extensive heterotopic ossification is a cause of limitation of active or passive joint motion and ultimately bony ankylosis which interferes independency in activities of daily living and ability of maximum rehabilitation. Whereas, the articular complication of heterotopic ossification have been well documented, the vascular complication are less well known. We experienced one case with vascular compression and obstruction by heterotopic ossification in a patient with traumatic brain injury and reported the case with clinical and radiologcal and laboratoric findings.

Abiotic stress is the major limiting factor of forage crops growth and yields. The objective of this work was to study the stress tolerance and regeneration capability of transgenic forage crops carrying a MsHSP23 gene, encoding a alfalfa mitochondrial sHSP protein. The expression of the MsHSP23 gene was confirmed in bacteria, recombinant mHSP23 conferred tolerance to salinity and arsenic stress. Furthermore, mHSP23 was cloned in a plant expressing vector and transformed into forage crops such as alfalfa, tall fescue and bent grass. The transgenic plants exhibited enhanced tolerance to salinity and arsenic stress conditions. In comparison to wild type plants, transgenic plants were exhibited significantly lower electrolyte leakage. Moreover, the transgenic plants had superior germination rates when placed on medium containing arsenic. Taken together, these overexpression results imply that mHSP23 plays an important role in salinity and arsenic stress tolerance in transgenic forage crops. This approach could be useful to develop stress-tolerant plants including forage crops.

This is the first case report to describe a 44-year-old woman with a history of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma who developed toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) clinically after taking 400 mg sorafenib (Nexavar^ⓡ, BAY 43-9006) and tosufloxacin orally once per day. Both sorafenib and tosufloxacin were eventually discontinued, and the TEN resolved with corticosteroids and supportive treatment. Clinical physicians should be aware of this possible complication so that early interventions can be made. (Ann Dermatol 23(S3) S404∼S407, 2011)
