Paeonia radix is the root of Paeonia japonica MIYABE, a perennial plant classified in the family Paeoniaceae. In the present study, the effects of Paeonia radix on performance in treadmill exercise, and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) synthesis and tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) expression in the dorsal raphe were investigated. Time to exhaustion in treadmill exercise was increased and exercise-induced increases in 5-HT synthesis and TPH expression were inhibited by Paeonia radix treatment under resting conditions as well. In sum, treatment with Paeonia radix, inhibiting 5-HT synthesis and TPH expression, may bring about reduced fatigue, both during exercise and the resting state.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of the scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO) guided re-test mode on short- and long-term measurement variability of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness obtained by spectral domain-SLO optical coherence tomography (SD-SLO/OCT). Methods: Seventy five healthy eyes were scanned 3 times per day (intra-session variability) by both the SLO guided re-test mode and the independent mode of SD-SLO/OCT. Subjects were scanned 3 times by both modes at visits within a 2-week interval (inter-session variability). For testing longitudinal variability, 3 separate exams were performed over 6 months by both modes. The coefficient of variation (CV), reproducibility coefficient (RC) and intraclass correlation coefficient of RNFL thickness were compared between the two modes. Results: The intra-session RC and CV ranged from 5.4 to 12.9 microns and 1.76% to 5.72% when measured by independent mode and 5.4 to 12.5 microns and 1.75% to 5.58% by re-test mode, respectively. The inter-session RC and CV ranged from 5.8 to 13.3 microns and 1.89% to 5.78% by independent mode and 5.8 to 12.7 microns and 1.90% to 5.54% by re-test mode, respectively. Intra-session and inter-session variability measurements were not significantly different between the two modes. The longitudinal RC and CV ranged from 8.5 to 19.2 microns and 2.79% to 7.08% by independent mode and 7.5 to 14.4 microns and 2.33% to 6.22% by retest mode, respectively. Longitudinal measurement variability was significantly lower when measured by the re-test mode compared to the independent mode (average, p = 0.011). Conclusions: The SLO guided re-test mode for RNFL thickness measurement in SD-SLO/OCT employing a tracking system improved long-term reproducibility by reducing variability induced by inconsistent scan circle placement.
만성 호중구성 백혈병(Chronic Neutrophilic Leukemia) 1예

Chronic neutrophilic leukemia is a very rare myeloproliferative disorder characterized by splenomagaly, persistent neutrophilia, bone marrow granulocyte hyperplasia, elevated leukocyte alkaline phosphatase, the absense of philadelphis cheomosome. Recently we have experienced a case of chronic neutrophilic leukemia in a 73 years old woman who complained of general weakness. On admission, peripheral blood examination showed leukocytosis with mature neutrophil: Hb 10.5g/㎗, WBC 33,200/㎣, platelet 751,000/㎣ and neutrophoil 93% in differential count. The underlying disease for leukemoid reaction has not been detected. Leukocyte alkaline phospatase score was elevated. Bone marrow study revealed hypercellular marrow with prominent neutrophilic hyperplasia and without myelofibrosis. The cytogenic study shows normal bone marrow cell karyotype without philadephia chromosome.

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection is a rare cause of myocardial infarction. It occurs in relatively young people with a striking predilection for women, mainly during or after prognancy. The optimal management of spontaneous coronary artery dissection has not been established yet and may vary, depending upon the presence of intimal versus extramural compromise. Coronary artery bypass, stenting, and thrombolysis may have been successful and also may have failed, owing to extension of dissection. We describe a case of acute myocardial infarction caused by spontaneous coronary artery dissection which occurs in a 51-year old man. The coronary angiography showed a spiral dissection of right coronary artery, from the origin of conus branch to the distal portion of right coronary artery. An intimal plaque with 35% obstruction and normal (TIMI 3) flow was demonstrated. The patient was functionally recovered after conventional midical treatment including heparin, beta blockers and long acting nitrates. Four months later, follow up coronary angiography showed stabilization of coronary lesion and improvement of stenosis.

To clarify the cardiotoxicity of methotrexate(MTX) in cultured myocardial cells, cardiotoxicity was assessed by MTS assay. Myocardial cells were treated with 20∼80ug/ml MTX for 24 hours. and also, the cardioprotective effect of Humuli Herba was measured by MTS assay in these cultrures. Cell viability was remarkably decreased dose-dependently after myocardial cells were exposed to 60ug/ml MTX for 24 hours. In the cardioprotective effect of Humuli Herba on the cardiotoxicity induced by MTX, Herba Humuli prevented the cardiotoxicity induced by MTX in these cultures. From above the results, it suggests that MTX is toxic in cultured myocardial cells and herb extract, Humuli Herba has protective effect against the cardiotoxicity induced by MTX.

The possibility has been raised that Folium mort is clinically effective for the treatment and prevention of diabetes In the present study, the effects of Folium mori on cell proliferation and expression of neuropeptide Y(NPY) in the dentate gyrus of rats with streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes were investigated by 5-bromo-2'deoxyuridine (BrdU) immunohistochemistry and NPY immunohistochemistry. In rats with STZ-induced diabetes, cell proliferation and NPY expression in the dentate gyrus were suppressed, and treatment with Folium mori was shown to increase new cell formation and NPY expression in the gyrus in both normal rats and those with STZ-induced diabetes. In light of previous studies, this result appears to indicate that increased expression of NPY in the dentate gyrus induced by treatment with Folium mori is associated with the observed effect of Folium mori extract on cell proliferation. Based on the present results, it is suggested that Folium mori treatment may aid in the recovery from the central nervous system complications of diabetes mellitus.
돼지위축성비염과 가금티푸스 병원균을 저해하는 Bacillus amyloliquefaciens TK3의 분리 및 특성 조사

Bordetella bronchiseptica에 의한 돼지위축성비염과 Salmonella gallinarum에 의한 가금티푸스 방지 방법을 찾기 위해서 두 세균병원체에 항균활성을 갖는 세균 균주를 축산농가의 여러 시료로부터 분리하였다. 분리균주 372개 중 TK3 균주가 두 병원체에 대해 가장 우수한 항균활성을 나타내었으며, 16S rRNA 염기서열 분석 결과 Bacillus amyloliquefaciens로 동정되었다. B. amyloliquefaciens TK3는 siderophore, rhamnolipid와 antimicrobial peptide 같은 항균물질을 분비하여 두 병원체의 생장을 저해할 수 있었다. TK3 균주는 Chrome azurol S 한천 평판에서 siderophore 생성반지름이 14일 배양 후 0.53 cm이었으며, King's B 배지에서 1.06 mmol/ml의 siderophore를 생성하였다. 또한 82.4 mg/L의 rhamnolipid를 분비하였으며, LB배지에 $30{\mu}l/ml$ 농도의 추출된 antimicrobial peptide 첨가 시 두 병원체의 생장을 완전히 저해하였다. For prevention of atrophic rhinitis of swine by Bordetella bronchiseptica and fowl typhoid by Salmonella gallinarum, bacterial strains showing antimicrobial activity against those pathogenic bacteria were isolated from various samples collected at animal farms. Among 372 bacterial isolates strain TK3 showed the highest antibacterial activity against both pathogens, and was identified as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. B. amyloliquefaciens TK3 could inhibit growth of both pathogens by secretion of antibacterial compounds such as siderophore, rhamnolipid and antimicrobial peptide. Production radius of siderophore on Chrome azurol S agar plate by strain TK3 was 0.53 cm after 14 days of incubation, and concentration of siderophore in King's B medium was 1.06 mmol/ml. It also secreted 82.4 mg/L of rhamnolipid, and antimicrobial peptide that completely inhibited growth of both pathogens at concentration of $30{\mu}l/ml$ in LB medium.
