Response of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) to salt‐stressed maize plants

        Wang Zai‐Ling,Haseeb Muhammad,Zhang Run‐Zhi 한국곤충학회 2021 Entomological Research Vol.51 No.11

Salt-stressed maize is an economically important crop in many arid and semi-arid regions of the world where soil salinization is most common, and the invasive fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda threatens global maize production. It thus poses a puzzle of whether FAW populations feeding on salt-stressed maize plants are becoming more or less invasive. Here, we evaluated the FAW response to salt-stressed maize plants by examining effects of salt-stressed maize plants on FAW survival, development and fecundity. We found a longer larval development time (salt-stressed, 12.9 ± 0.8 d; non-stressed, 11.3 ± 0.4 d), but unaffected survival rate and pupal mass accumulation in FAW feeding on salt-stressed maize plants. Moreover, the lifetime egg production of FAW females feeding on salt-stressed maize plants (633.5 ± 62.7 eggs) was reduced by nearly half compared with those feeding on non-stressed maize plants (1255.9 ± 70.3 eggs). Overall, FAW showed a negative response to salt-stressed maize plants. Due to limited population increase potential, FAW populations feeding on salt-stressed maize plants should pose less of a problem than ones feeding on non-stressed maize plants do. In practice, salt-stressed maize plants are quite common in arid and semi-arid regions where the relatively high-salinity groundwater is often used to irrigate maize plants, potentially limiting FAW population size. Thus, salt-stressed maize plants would contribute to practical applications of integrated pest management (IPM) strategies in controlling FAW.

Structural Stability and Electronic and Optical Properties of Coinage-Metal (4; 2) Alloy Nanotubes: A First-Principles Study

        Xi-Zhi Wang,Liang-Cai Ma,Ling Ma,Xue-Ling Lin,Jian-Min Zhang 한국물리학회 2019 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.74 No.6

Using rst-principles calculations, we have systematically investigated the structural stability and the electronic and optical properties of bimetallic AgAu, CuAu, and CuAg (4; 2) alloy nanotubes (NTs). We found that the tip-suspended AgAu and CuAu alloy NTs were stable structures due to the existence of local minima in both the binding energies and the string tensions variation with their unit-cell lengths and that the stability was enhanced when the content of Au was increased. However, a tip-suspended CuAg alloy NT would be difficult to form in future experiments. We also found that both the relativistic effect of elemental gold and the string tension applied by the tip contacts play important roles in suppressing effectively the self-purication effect, leading to the formation of these coinage alloy NTs. The quantum conductance of the stable alloy NTs is increased by 1G0 as compared with that of the corresponding pure coinage-metal NTs.

      • Fall Detection Algorithm for the Elderly Based on Human Characteristic Matrix and SVM

        WANG Rui-dong,ZHANG Yong-liang,DONG Ling-ping,LU Jia-wei,ZHANG Zhi-qin,HE Xia 제어로봇시스템학회 2015 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2015 No.10

Fall is one of the leading causes of injury and death for the elderly. Real-time fall detection is of great significance for the safety of the elderly. This paper proposes a coarse to fine fall detection algorithm based on Human characteristic matrix and Support Vector Machine (SVM). First, background subtraction and morphological processing are used to obtain more accurately human silhouette. Then, two human characteristic matrices are constructed based on Hu-moment invariant and the information of human body posture extracted from human silhouette and are used as features to train SVM classifier for fall detection. Experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm can distinguish fall event from other movements such as squat, sitting down and back turning. Compared with other common methods, the proposed method can real-time and efficiently track the video with 18 frames per second.

Realgar bioleaching solution suppress ras excessive activation by increasing ROS in Caenorhabditis elegans

        Zhi, De Juan,Feng, Na,Liu, Dong Ling,Hou, Rong Li,Wang, Mei Zu,Ding, Xiao Xia,Li, Hong Yu 대한약학회 2014 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.37 No.3

Although realgar bioleaching solution (RBS) has been proved to be a potential candidate for cancer therapy, the mechanisms of RBS anticancer are still far from being completely understood. Dosed with RBS in C. elegans, the multivulva phenotype resulting from oncogenic ras gain-of-function was inhibited in a dose dependent manner. It could be abrogated by concurrent treatment C. elegans with RBS and the radical scavenger DMSO. However, RBS could not induce DAF-16 nuclear translocation in TJ356 or the increase of HSP 16.2 expression in CL2070, which both could be aroused visible GFP fluorescent variation to represent for oxidative stress generation. Treatment C. elegans with superoxide anion generator paraquat, similar results were also obtained. Our results indicated that RBS suppress excessive activated ras by increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) in C. elegans. Secondly, ROS induced by RBS significantly accumulated on a higher level inC. elegans with amutational ras than that with wild ras, thus leading to oxidative stress on ras gain-of-function background rather than on normal ras context. Our results firstly demonstrated that using C. elegans as amodel organism for evaluating prooxidant drug candidates for cancer therapy.

The Beneficial Effects of Dietary Astragali Radix Are Related to the Regulation of Gut Microbiota and Its Metabolites

        Zhi Chai,Zhen-Yu Li,Ling Wang,Lan Yang,Xiao-Ling Cheng,Xue-Mei Qin 한국식품영양과학회 2024 Journal of medicinal food Vol.27 No.1

Astragali Radix (AR) or its extract has been used as an herbal medicine and dietary supplement in China,Europe, and the United States. The gut microbiota could provide new insights for exploring dietary supplements’ underlyingmechanism on organisms. However, no reports have focused on the regulatory effect of AR on the gut microbiota as a dietarysupplement. In this study, healthy ICR mice of either sex were divided into AR and control (CON) groups and given AR waterextract (4.55 mg/kg$day-1) or saline by gavage for 14 days, respectively. Then 16S rRNA gene sequencing and ultra-highperformanceliquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry-based fecal metabolomics wereintegrated to investigate the benefits of dietary AR. Weighted gene coexpression network analysis was also introduced toinvestigate the metabolites with highly synergistic changes. AR supplementation influenced the structure of intestinal microflora, especially enriching short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria g_Coprobacillus, g_Prevotella, and g_Parabacteroides. AR also significantly altered the fecal metabolome, mainly related to amino acid metabolism, nucleotidemetabolism, and bile acid (BA) metabolism. Moreover, the increased secondary BAs and BA-sulfates might closely relate tointestinal microflora. These findings provide valuable insights for future research of dietary AR as a functional food.

Angiopoietin-1 Modified Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy for Endotoxin- Induced Acute Lung Injury in Rats

        Zhi-Wei Huang,Le-Ling Zhang,Ning Liu,Dong Li,Hai-Yan Zhang,Ying Wang,Yi Liu,Xiu-Li Ju 연세대학교의과대학 2017 Yonsei medical journal Vol.58 No.1

Purpose: Angiopoietin-1 (Ang1) is a critical factor for vascular stabilization and endothelial survival via inhibition of endothelial permeability and leukocyte- endothelium interactions. Hence, we hypothesized that treatment with umbilical cord mesenchymalstem cells (UCMSCs) carrying the Ang1 gene (UCMSCs-Ang1) might be a potential approach for acute lung injury (ALI) inducedby lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Materials and Methods: UCMSCs with or without transfection with the human Ang1 gene were delivered intravenously into rats one hour after intra-abdominal instillation of LPS to induce ALI. After the rats were sacrificed at 6 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours, 8 days, and 15 days post-injection of LPS, the serum, the lung tissues, and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were harvested for analysis, respectively. Results: Administration of fluorescence microscope confirmed the increased presence of UCMSCs in the injured lungs. The evaluationof UCMSCs and UCMSCs-Ang1 actions revealed that Ang1 overexpression further decreased the levels of the pro-inflammatorycytokines TNF-α, TGF-β1, and IL-6 and increased the expression of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 in the injured lungs. This synergy caused a substantial decrease in lung airspace inflammation and vascular leakage, characterized by significantreductions in wet/dry ratio, differential neutrophil counts, myeloperoxidase activity, and BALF. The rats treated by UCMSCs-Ang1 showed improved survival and lower ALI scores. Conclusion: UCMSCs-Ang1 could improve both systemic inflammation and alveolar permeability in ALI. UC-derived MSCs-based Ang1 gene therapy may be developed as a potential novel strategy for the treatment of ALI.

Diversity of Endophytic Fungi from Different Verticillium-Wilt-Resistant Gossypium hirsutum and Evaluation of Antifungal Activity Against Verticillium dahliae In Vitro

( Zhi Fang Li ),( Ling Fei Wang ),( Zi Li Feng ),( Li Hong Zhao ),( Yong Qiang Shi ),( He Qin Zhu ) 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 2014 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.24 No.9

Cotton plants were sampled and ranked according to their resistance to Verticillium wilt. In total, 642 endophytic fungi isolates representing 27 genera were recovered from Gossypium hirsutum root, stem, and leaf tissues, but were not uniformly distributed. More endophytic fungi appeared in the leaf (391) compared with the root (140) and stem (111) sections. However, no significant difference in the abundance of isolated endophytes was found among resistant cotton varieties. Alternaria exhibited the highest colonization frequency (7.9%), followed by Acremonium (6.6%) and Penicillium (4.8%). Unlike tolerant varieties, resistant and susceptible ones had similar endophytic fungal population compositions. In three Verticillium-wilt-resistant cotton varieties, fungal endophytes from the genus Alternaria were most frequently isolated, followed by Gibberella and Penicillium. The maximum concentration of dominant endophytic fungi was observed in leaf tissues (0.1797). The evenness of stem tissue endophytic communities (0.702) was comparatively more uniform than the other two tissues. Eighty endophytic fungi selected from 27 genera were evaluated for their inhibition activity against highly virulent Verticillium dahliae isolate Vd080 in vitro. Thirty-nine isolates exhibited fungistasis against the pathogen at varying degrees. Seven species, having high growth inhibition rates (≥75%), exhibited strong antifungal activity against V. dahliae. The antifungal activity of both volatile and nonvolatile metabolites was also investigated. The nonvolatile substances produced by CEF-818 (Penicillium simplicissimum), CEF-325 (Fusarium solani), CEF-714 (Leptosphaeria sp.), and CEF-642 (Talaromyces flavus) completely inhibited V. dahliae growth. These findings deepen our understanding of cotton-endophyte interactions and provide a platform for screening G. hirsutum endophytes with biocontrol potential.

Indirect Determination of Cetirizine Hydrochloride by ICP-AES

        Wang, Li-Sheng,Wei, Xiao-Ling,Gong, Qi,Jiang, Zhi-Liang,Li, Dong-Mei,Liang, Qing Korean Chemical Society 2011 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.32 No.2

Cetirizine hydrochloride reacted with $BiI_4^-$ in an acidic aqueous solution to form precipitate. After centrifugation, the atomic emission intensity of $Bi^{3+}$ contained in the supernatant solution was measured at the characteristic wavelength of 206.170 nm. The difference between the spectral signal intensity of the blank solution and that of the supernatant, ${\Delta}I$, was linearly related to the concentration of cetirizine hydrochloride. As a result, a new inductively coupled plasmaatomic emission spectrometric (ICP-AES) method was developed for the analysis of cetirizine hydrochloride. The linear range was from 27.7 to 184.8 $mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$, with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.9961 and a detection limit of 9.6 $mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. This method is simple and accurate, Without using toxic organic solvents, and is feasible for the quality control of cetirizine hydrochloride tablets and capsules.
