Response of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) to salt‐stressed maize plants

        Wang Zai‐Ling,Haseeb Muhammad,Zhang Run‐Zhi 한국곤충학회 2021 Entomological Research Vol.51 No.11

Salt-stressed maize is an economically important crop in many arid and semi-arid regions of the world where soil salinization is most common, and the invasive fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda threatens global maize production. It thus poses a puzzle of whether FAW populations feeding on salt-stressed maize plants are becoming more or less invasive. Here, we evaluated the FAW response to salt-stressed maize plants by examining effects of salt-stressed maize plants on FAW survival, development and fecundity. We found a longer larval development time (salt-stressed, 12.9 ± 0.8 d; non-stressed, 11.3 ± 0.4 d), but unaffected survival rate and pupal mass accumulation in FAW feeding on salt-stressed maize plants. Moreover, the lifetime egg production of FAW females feeding on salt-stressed maize plants (633.5 ± 62.7 eggs) was reduced by nearly half compared with those feeding on non-stressed maize plants (1255.9 ± 70.3 eggs). Overall, FAW showed a negative response to salt-stressed maize plants. Due to limited population increase potential, FAW populations feeding on salt-stressed maize plants should pose less of a problem than ones feeding on non-stressed maize plants do. In practice, salt-stressed maize plants are quite common in arid and semi-arid regions where the relatively high-salinity groundwater is often used to irrigate maize plants, potentially limiting FAW population size. Thus, salt-stressed maize plants would contribute to practical applications of integrated pest management (IPM) strategies in controlling FAW.

      • Overexpression of Hiwi Promotes Growth of Human Breast Cancer Cells

Wang, Da-Wei,Wang, Zhao-Hui,Wang, Ling-Ling,Song, Yang,Zhang, Gui-Zhen Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.18

The Piwi subfamily comprises two argonaute (Ago) family proteins, which are defined by the presence of PAZ and Piwi domains, with well known roles in RNA silencing. Hiwi, a human Piwi subfamily member, has been shown to play essential roles in stem cell self-renewal and gametogenesis. Recently, accumulating reports have indicated that abnormal hiwi expression is associated with poorer prognosis of multiple types of human cancers, including examples in the breast. However, little is known about details of the oncogenic role of hiwi in breast cancers. In present study, we confirmed overexpression of hiwi in breast cancer specimens and breast cancer cell lines at both mRNA and protein levels. Thus both RT-qPCR and Western blot data revealed significantly higher hiwi in intratumor than peritumor specimens, overexpression being associated with tumor size, lymph node metastasis and histological grade. Hiwi overexpression was also identified in breast cancer cell lines, MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7, and gain-of-function and loss-of-function strategies were adopted to identify the role of hiwi in the MCF-7 cell growth. Results demonstrated that hiwi expression in MCF-7 cells was significantly up- or down-regulated by the two strategies. We next evaluated the influence of hiwi overexpression or knockdown on the growth of breast cancer cells. Both cell count and colony formation assays confirmed promoting roles of hiwi in MCF-7 cells, which could be inhibited by hiwi specific blockage by siRNAs. In summary, the present study confirmed overexpression of hiwi in breast cancer specimens and breast cancer cell lines, and provided e vidence of promotion by hiwi of cell growth. The results imply an oncogenic role of hiwi in breast cancers.

T-spline surface smoothing based on 1-ring neighborhood space angle

        Wang Aizeng,Li Ling,Chang Heng,Zhao Gang,Wang Wei,Yang Jiaming 한국CDE학회 2022 Journal of computational design and engineering Vol.9 No.4

The prominent properties owned by T-spline, such as flexibility, continuity, local refinement, water tightness, make it extensively applied in Computer Aided Design (CAD)- and Computer Aided Engineering (CAE)-integrating scenarios. But the local fairness may dissatisfy in damaged areas or even on the entire surface of industry applications. Under these circumstances, local protrusion and sharp features appeared seriously affect the fairness of T-spline surfaces. Derived from the geometric properties of T-spline control points, we propose a smoothing algorithm based on the 1-ring neighborhood space angle to deal with local abruptions of T-spline surfaces. We also demonstrate the availability of the proposed algorithm through several experiments. Results show that this method is suitable for removing sharp features and smoothing unstructured T-spline surfaces.

      • A Resonator-Adaptable Oscillator Using Varactor-Loaded Tuned Amplifiers

        Wang, Yong,Hong, Yan,Goh, Wang Ling,Chai, Kevin T. C.,Je, Minkyu IEEE 2017 IEEE microwave and wireless components letters Vol.27 No.8

<P>This letter presents a new monolithic oscillatory circuit that is applicable to different microelectromechanical systems (MEMS)/crystal resonators. The proposed technique cascades tuned amplifiers (TAs) with varactors in their LC-tanks. By adjusting the bias voltage of the varactors, the center frequencies of the TAs can be controlled to change the loop response of the oscillator. Using this approach, the oscillation conditions can precisely be attained for different resonant frequencies. Tunable negative resistance is realized through biasing the MOS transistors in the TAs, so as to compensate losses from the different resonators. The TAs present bandpass characteristics that superbly suppress the overtones, thus improving the oscillator stability. Fabricated in 0.18-mu m CMOS technology, a prototype oscillator chip is able to suit a variety of resonators, offering 274- to 565-MHz frequency range, 30-dB dynamic loop gain, and -27 dB/octave roll-off to suppress all undesired frequencies. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the proposed monolithic oscillator is the first of its kind to be applicable to various MEMS resonators at above 100 MHz, which is beneficial for MEMS sensor applications, clock generations, etc.</P>

A DFT study of the geometrical structures and electronic properties of CumMn (m + n = 6, M = Fe, Co, Ni) clusters

Wang Su Juan,Zhou Dan,Hu Yan Fei,Tang Cui Ming,Wang Qiao Zhi,Chen Shun Ling 한국물리학회 2021 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.79 No.3

In this work, we investigated bimetallic CumMn (m + n = 6, M = Fe, Co, Ni) clusters on the basis of the density functional theory at the M06L level. While changing the structure and composition, our team studied the geometrical structures, relative stabilities and electronic magnetic moments of these clusters. We found that the average atomic binding energies vary linearly with the number of doping atoms in the CumFen and the CumNin clusters. The values of electron affinity (EA) and the ionization potential (IP) for the CumNin clusters are closer to those of pure Cu clusters compared with the others. A negative value of the EA is only seen in CumFen clusters. The electronic magnetic moments of these clusters indicate that most of them exhibit a local minimum when doped with three atoms. Moreover, we further analyzed the HOMO–LUMO gaps, the natural population, and the geometrical structures.

Analysis on Casual Relationship between International Arbitration and Foreign Direct Investment A Comparative Analysis of China, Korea, Japan, Mongolia and United States

        Wang Mei-Ling(왕메이령),Choi Chang-Hwan(최창환) 한국국제상학회 2016 國際商學 Vol.31 No.4

This paper investigated whether the international arbitration can promote FDI or not, using the comparison analysis of empirical data from 2001 to 2012 in China, Korea, Japan, Mongolia and United States. The empirical results showed promoted as International Arbitrations then FDI would be promoted. If GDP, Export, Import and Unemployment increased, then the FDI decreased. On the other hand, FDI, Unemployment, Import increased, International Arbitrations increased too. But the more Export and GDP are the less international arbitration cases. As the growth of continuous increase in the scale of economy and trade, the arbitration system acting as the settlement system to solve commercial transaction disputes is more emphasised. It can futher prompt the develpment of economy and trade & social develoment of related countries and contribute to the growth of economic cooperation.

Development of microsatellite markers and analysis of genetic diversity of Barbatia virescens in the southern coasts of China

        Ling Wang,Hong Yu,Qi Li 한국유전학회 2019 Genes & Genomics Vol.41 No.4

Background The blood clam Barbatia virescens is an ecologically and economically important species in the southern coast of China. Understanding of the genetic structure of B. virescens populations is vital to breeding strategies and conservation programs. Objective To develop and characterize a set of microsatellites loci primers for B. virescens, and provide helpful information for reasonable utilization and protection of B. virescens natural resources. Methods The microsatellites of B. virescens were detected using a RAD-seq approach based on an Illumina sequencing platform. For the test of microsatellite development, we calculated the number of alleles (Na), observed heterozygosities (Ho), expected heterozygosities (He) and exact tests for deviations from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium (HWE). Twelve polymorphic loci were used to access the genetic diversity and population structure of four B. virescens populations. Results In this study, 50,729 microsatellites of B. virescens were detected. Twenty-two polymorphic microsatellite loci were developed for B. virescens. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 6 to 15, and expected heterozygosities varied from 0. 567 to 0.911. All the PIC values of the 22 loci were greater than 0.5, indicating that these markers were highly informative for further genetic analysis. Twelve loci were selected to analyze genetic diversity and population structure of four B. virescens populations collected from different geographical regions along the southern coast of China. The results showed moderate to high levels of genetic diversity in the four populations (mean Ar = 7.756–8.133; mean Ho = 0.575–0.639; mean He = 0.754–0.775). Pairwise FST estimates indicated that there was significant divergence among the four populations. Conclusion This study not only provides a large scale of sequence information of microsatellites which are valuable for future genetic mapping, trait association and kinship among B. virescens, but also offers useful information for the sustainable management of natural stocks and the development of breeding industry of B. virescens.
