China and the Prospects of Denuclearization of North Korea
( Fei-ling Wang ) 서울대학교 통일평화연구원 2018 Asian Journal of Peacebuilding Vol.6 No.2
This article interprets and analyzes the role of China in and the prospects of denuclearization of North Korea. Driven by its ruling party’s peculiar political interest of resisting, reducing, and replacing American power at the expense of its national interest of cooperating with the United States, Beijing has been alternatively facilitating (somewhat) and fettering (mostly) North Korean denuclearization to make the cause unavoidably long and arduous, if doable at all. The latest resumption of Beijing-Pyongyang ties, in reaction to the Trump-Kim summit, suggests that a fundamental change in Beijing’s strategic stance on the North Korean nuclear issue has taken place, making genuinely enabling peaceful denuclearization of the DPRK rather difficult as it would require literally a political change-of-heart in Beijing.
A Regional Play of the Global Game: China’s Korea Policy and the Sino-American Relationship
Fei-Ling Wang 통일연구원 2005 International journal of korean unification studie Vol.14 No.2
This paper describes China’s policy towards the two Koreas in the context of the global game of the Sino-American relationship. It outlines the key motivations behind the making of Chinese foreign policy in general and the uncertainties and constraints produced by China’s relationship with the United States. As a result of its overall objectives in diplomacy, Beijing is seeking a shared strategic interest with Washington on the Korean Peninsula but prefers the continued survival of the DPRK regime and simultaneously develops ever-closer relations with the ROK. China’s basic policy towards the two Koreas remains in favor of maintaining the status quo as well as aiming towards the denuclearization of the peninsula. However, the uncertainties and complications of China-US/Japan relations profoundly affect China’s strategic calculations and Beijing may be ready to make major shifts in its policy on Korean unification and the North Korean nuclear issue, as its power grows and its relations with Washington and Tokyo become increasingly complicated. Objective: To investigate the relationship between the efficacy and safety of different doses of thalidomide (Thal) plus dexamethasone (Dex) as the initial therapy in elderly patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (MM). Methods: Clinical data of 28 elderly patients with newly diagnosed MM who underwent the TD regimen as the initial therapy were analyzed retrospectively. The patients were divided into two groups according to the maximal sustained dose of Thal: lower dose (group A) and higher dose (group B). The overall response rate (ORR), progression free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and adverse events (AES) were compared between the two groups. Results: A total of 28 patients were followed up with a median of 18 months. The ORR was 60.1%. The median response time and PFS were 2.0 and 17.0 months, respectively. The mean sustained dose of Thal in group B was significantly higher than group A (292.9 mg v 180.4 mg, P=0.01). There was no significantly difference in ORR (57.1% v 64.3%, P=1.00) and PFS (9.63months v 17.66 months, P=0.73) between groups A and B. During the follow up, only five patients died (<40%) and, therefore, median OS values were not available. It is estimated, however, that the mean survival time in the two groups was 35.6 and 33.4 months (P>0.05), respectively. All of the patients tolerated the treatment well. The incidence of AES in patients with a grading above 3 in group B was significantly higher than in group A (P=0.033). Conclusions: The TD regimen results in a high response rate and manageable AES as the initial therapy in elderly patients with MM. TD should be considered as the front line regimen for the treatment of elderly patients with MM in areas with financial constraints. The clinical response can be achieved at a low dose Thal with minimal toxicity.

Vertical vibration model of strip mill is established by considering piecewise nonlinear constraint arising from hydraulic cylinder. The approximate analytical solution of the model is obtained by incremental harmonic balance (IHB) method. The harmonic frequencies not conducive to stability are produced because the nonlinearity of the piecewise constraint. Bifurcation behavior of the system changes with external excitation amplitude and frequency ratio, intermittent chaos and periodic window are appeared alternately, the chaos region enlarged with the increasing piecewise interval. Compared with the piecewise linear constraint, the region of chaotic motion is widened obviously under the nonlinear constraint. Moreover, the critical condition of bifurcation and chaos behavior can be obtained from maximum Lyapunov exponent (MLE).

Lymphoma is one of the most curable types of cancer. However, drug resistance is the main challenge faced in lymphoma treatment. Peroxisomal acyl-CoA oxidase 1 (ACOX1) is the rate-limiting enzyme in fatty acid β-oxidation. Deregulation of ACOX1 has been linked to peroxisomal disorders and carcinogenesis in the liver. Currently, there is no information about the function of ACOX1 in lymphoma. In this study, we found that upregulation of ACOX1 promoted proliferation in lymphoma cells, while downregulation of ACOX1 inhibited proliferation and induced apoptosis. Additionally, overexpression of ACOX1 increased resistance to doxorubicin, while suppression of ACOX1 expression markedly potentiated doxorubicin-induced apoptosis. Interestingly, downregulation of ACOX1 promoted mitochondrial location of Bad, reduced mitochondrial membrane potential and provoked apoptosis by activating caspase-9 and caspase-3 related apoptotic pathway. Overexpression of ACOX1 alleviated doxorubicin-induced activation of caspase-9 and caspase-3 and decrease of mitochondrial membrane potential. Importantly, downregulation of ACOX1 increased p73, but not p53, expression. p73 expression was critical for apoptosis induction induced by ACOX1 downregulation. Also, overexpression of ACOX1 significantly reduced stability of p73 protein thereby reducing p73 expression. Thus, our study indicated that suppression of ACOX1 could be a novel and effective approach for treatment of lymphoma. [BMB Reports 2019; 52(9): 566-571]

Developing well-behaved electrode materials is crucial for manufacturing high-performance batteries,SCs and electrocatalysis, and it is also one of the main driving forces for the development of EES devices. In consideration of the high robustness and electrical conductivity during the electrochemical reactionprocess, VN-based materials exhibit good performance as electrode materials (or catalytic materials)for batteries, supercapacitors, and excellent catalytic activity for electrocatalysts. Especially, the VNbasedmaterials decorated into other active compounds with various morphologies elaborately presentexcellent performances due to the abundant active sites and fully synergistic effect. This review presentsthe structure-performance relation by designing different-dimensional nanostructures and various applicationsof VN-based materials in electrochemical energy storage (EES) applications. Finally, the perspectiveson future challenges and progress have been discussed. This review can offer a specificunderstanding for the optimization strategies of VN-based materials, thus booming the rapid developmentand practical applications for EES devices in the future.
