      • An S-locus receptor-like kinase in plasma membrane interacts with calmodulin in <i>Arabidopsis</i>

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Calmodulin-regulated protein phosphorylation plays a pivotal role in amplifying and diversifying the action of calcium ion. In this study, we identified a calmodulin-binding receptor-like protein kinase (CBRLK1) that was classified into an S-locus RLK family. The plasma membrane localization was determined by the localization of CBRLK1 tagged with a green fluorescence protein. Calmodulin bound specifically to a Ca<SUP>2+</SUP>-dependent calmodulin binding domain in the C-terminus of CBRLK1. The bacterially expressed CBRLK1 kinase domain could autophosphorylate and phosphorylates general kinase substrates, such as myelin basic proteins.         Edible flower means a flower that is good to eat is subject to either cooking or appetizing. In general, people eat edible flower as raw so that the loss of vitamin and inorganic are minimal. Edible flower is usually utilized as salad material or aromatic, decoration for jelly or cake and solid stuff in soup. Thus, decorating food by edible flower improves flavor, fragrance and appetite. Edible flower serves various purposes both east and west. In Korea, Edible flower is mainly subject to soup, cooked potherbs, frying, tea stuff, brewing and etc, whereas in Japan, its various usage covers cooked potherbs, pickle, sliced raw fish, frying, salad, jelly and decoration. On the other hand, Edible flower is used as numerous salad and tea stuff, condiment, roasting, meat, sweets and desserts in Western Hemisphere.

      • 서울지역 여대생들의 떡에 대한 인식 및 섭취 실태 조사

        This study conducted a survey of the improvement and popularization for Korea Rice Cakes, a Korean traditional food, on two hundred women students in five colleges in Seoul, Korea. It was investigated to get the information of the recognition, preference, and consumption patterns for the succession and improvement of Korean Rice Cakes. The results are as follows: 1. A portion of 41.5% among responders knows from three to six kinds of Korean Rice Cakes, and of 28% can make at least one among the kinds of Korean Rice Cakes. 2. A portion of 91% recognizes that Korean Rice Cakes are one of well-nourished food, but of 42% answers that Korean Rice Cakes cannot be replaced with the principle food. Also, there are no significant differences in the recognition of Korean Rice Cakes as the kinds of religions. 3. The frequency of purchase is about one or twice in a month (35.5%). Consumers (36.5%) intend to purchase Korean Rice Cakes for the commemoration of national holidays or anniversaries. 4. The reasons for the preference of other foods more than Korean Rice Cakes are the easiness of purchase (36.0%), the deliciousness (21.5%), the diverse kindness (17.5%), and the proper package (9.5%). It is important that constant and particular school / home education is need to improve and success Korean Rice Cakes.

      • 노랑초파리 實驗集團內의 有害遺傳子에 관한 硏究

        The genetic variabilities in an experimental population of D. melanogaster were undertaken. The experimental population was composed of D. melanogaster which had the lethal-free and sterile-free second chromosome collected from Sasang natural population. The results were as follows: 1) The frequency of lethal chromosome was 7.53%, 9.56%, and 15.00% at the 171 days, 379 days, and 756 days respectively, and its allelic rate was 9.76% at the 756 days. 2) The variabilities such as semi-lethal, subvital, and normal chromosome were distributed to quasinormal type. 3) The frequency of second chromosome which carried female sterility was estimated to be 3.59%, 7.56% at the 171 days and 756 days, respectively. The frequency of male sterility was analyzed 1.19% at the 171 days and 4.20% at 756 days. 4) The elimination rate caused by deleterious genes in homozygotes was 0.0033, and the effective population size was about 600 flies at the 756 days population. 5) The actual population number was ranging from 1571 to 3229 flies in female and from 1988 to 3608 flies in male.

        Thii study examined the degree of school life adjustment in d adolescents as well as related variables.         We experienced a 25 year-old male patient with typhoid fever complicated with massive hemoptysis. Pulmonary complication in typhoid fever is very rare and to our knowledge, there has been no report of hemoptysis as a main cause of death with this disease. We herein report a rare case of typhoid fever.

      • 황금배 品種의 單一品種 果園을 위한 콩배 受粉樹 移用에 관한 硏究

        Fauriei pear(Pyrus fauriei Nakai) potentially useful as pollenizers in single-cultivar `Hwangkuembae' orchard was evaluated for their flowering times and pollen germination(%). Their efficiency in the setting of fruits following controlled pollinations on 'Hwangkuembae' at Fruit Tree Research Institute in Suwon was also examined. The obtained results are as followes ; (1) Flowering times of SKK 1 was from April 21 and that of them corresponded to that of 'Hwangkuembae'. (2) Pollen germination (%) of SKK 1 using as pollenizer of 'Hwangkuembae' was over 90%. Therefore Based on these factors, folwering times and pollen germination, SKK 1 was found to be promising as pollenizer for single-cultivar 'Hwangkuembae' orchard. (3) Percentage of fruit setting in 'Hwangkuembae' pollinated with Fauriei pear showed 71.9%. And there was no statistically significant difference in the fruit diameter(cm), fruit height(cm), fruit index, fruit weight (g), soluble solid(˚BX), acidity(pH), and fruit hardness (kg/㎠) of 'Hwangkuembae' pollinated with Fauriei pear (4) Percentages of fruit setting in 'Hwangkuembae' pollnated with Fauriei pear corresponding to flowering times of 'Hwangkuembae', was 871.9% and no statistically significant difference in fruit quality. On the bases of flowering times, pollen germination(%), efficient fruit set(%), and no statistically significant difference in fruit quality, Fauriei pear(Pyrus fauriei Nakai) is promising as pollenizers for single-cultivar 'Hwangkuembae' orchard.

        Rat Brain cDNA Library로부터 SNAP-25 유전자의 클로닝

        SNAP-25는 presynaptic plasma membrane에 위치하는 단백질로서 synaptic vesicle의 docking과 fusion에 있어서 매우 중요한 역할을 한다. 생쥐 SNAP-25 유전자와 99%의 높은 homology를 갖고 있는 Z2 cDNA를 probe로 사용하여 쥐의 뇌 cDNA library에서 SNAP-25 유전자를 screening 하였다. 그 결과 6개의 양성 클론을 분리해 냈으며, 이들 각각을 S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, S6으로 명명하였다. 이중에서 생쥐 SNAP-25와 가장 높은 homology를 보여 주고 있는 S5 클론을 선택하여 염기서열을 분석하였다. 2,100 bp의 염기서열로 구성된 쥐 SNAP-25 cDNA는 206개의 아미노산을 coding하는 618 bp의 open reading frame을 가지고 있으며, ORF는 209∼211 bp에 위치하는 AUG codon에서 시작하여 827∼829 bp에 위치 하는 stop codon TAA에서 끝난다. 3' untranslated region에서는 28과 19개의 CA 반복 염기서열을 보여주고 있었으며, SNAP-25 peptide sequence에서 4개의 cystein residues는 84∼91에 위치하고 있었으며, amino terminus부분에서 amphipathic α-helix를 형성하고 있는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 사람과 쥐의 SNAP-25 유전자는 88%, 생쥐와 쥐의 경 우는 97%의 homology를 보여 주고 있었다. 그리고 사람과 쥐의 ORF에서 염기서열은 94%, 생쥐와 쥐의 ORF에서 염기서열은 100%의 homology를 보여주고 있었으며 사람, 생쥐, 그리고 쥐 의 ORF에서 아미노산 서열은 100%의 homology를 보여 주고 있었다. SNAP-25 was first investigated as a neuron-specific protein preferentially expressed in CA3 pyramidal neurons of mouse hippocampus. It is a presynaptic plasma membrane protein in the nerve cell and plays an important role in the synaptic vesicle membrane docking and fusion pathway. We have recently isolated SNAP-25 cDNA from a rat brain cDNA library using a probe of Z2 cDNA. It consisted of 2,101 bp and an open reading frame (ORF) was identified between nucleotides (nt) 209 and 827. The AUG codon (nt 209∼211) was surrounded by CTACCATGG, which corresponded to the consensus sequence of ribosomal binding site. The ORF was terminated by TAA (nt 827∼829) to encode a polypeptide of 206 amino acid residues. The 3'-untranslated region contained two extensive stretches of repeated (CA)28 and (CA)19 at positions 925∼980 and 1645∼1682. It is noteworthy that cysteine residues were clustered in the span of amino acid residues 84∼91 : Cys-Gly-Leu-Cys-Val-Cys-Pro-Cys. Rat SNAP-25 showed 88% and 97% identity in nucleotide sequences to that of human and mouse, respectively. Amino acid sequence of rat SNAP-25 showed 100% identity to that of mouse and human SNAP-25.

        Background: High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), the classic acute-phase reactant, is an extremely sensitive systemic marker of inflammation. A variety of factors seems to influence hsCRP levels. The aim of this study was to elucidate the gender differences in the association between hsCRP and features of the metabolic syndrome (MS) among Korean. Methods: The study population included 1,283 men and 3,265 women aged 40 years and over who were enrolled in Korean Health Examinee Cohort. They were examined in 10 General hospitals from November 2004 to September 2005. The height, weight, waist circumference, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure of the subjects were examined and on concentrations of fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglyceride, and hsCRP in peripheral venous blood were measured. Results: In both sexes, there were significant positive correlations between age, smoking, body mass index, waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, triglyceride, and fasting glucose and hsCRP, whereas significant negative correlations were present between drinking, and HDL cholesterol and hsCRP. Mean concentrations of hsCRP in men with 0, 1, 2, 3, and ≥4 components of MS were 0.13, 0.16, 0.18, 0.20, and 0.22 mg/L, respectively. The respective mean concentrations of hsCRP for women were 0.08, 0.09, 0.12, 0.14 and 0.14 mg/L. Results of stratified analyses by the number of components of the metabolic syndrome of 0, 1, 2, 3, and ≥4 revealed that an increase in hsCRP concentrations was greater in men than women with an increased number of components of the MS. Conclusion: There was a difference in concentrations of hsCRP between men and women, and especially an increase in hsCRP concentrations associated with risk factor-clusteringof MS was more prnounced in men.
