Bacterioplankton
Vol.24 No.3
Quantitative species distribution and primary productivity of phytoplankton were studied monthly from August, 1987 to July, 1988 along with the quantitative distribution of total heterotrophic bacterioplankton and three groups of physiologically chracteristic bacterioplankton in the intertidal and subtidal waters off Kum River Estuary, Yellow Sea. A total of 121 phytoplankton taxa including 102 diatoms occurred, and cell concentration ranged from 15 to 5451 (cells/ml). The great spatio-temporal variations of the number of phytoplankton species and cell concentration well reflected the environmental differences between the intertidal and subtidal waters. Primary productivity (in Piopt, mgC/$m^3$/hr) ranged from 0.6 to 27.3. Just after the phytoplankton bloom (March) Piopt was very low in April at station 1, where amylolytic bacterioplankton also showed quite low population density. The peaks of primary productivity were not always coincided with those of phytoplankton standing crop. The ratio of Piopt's between samples well indicated the environmental differences between the intertidal and subtidal waters. Little characteristic trend was found in the scatter diagrams of phytoplankton standing crop along the population densities of total heterotrophic bacterioplankton and the three groups of physiologically characteristic bacterioplankton. In summer the phytoplankton standing crop was minimum in contrast with the high population density of bacterioplankton, which implies the influx of much allochthonous orgainc matter from Kum River. The scatter diagrams of Piopt along bacterioplankton population density revealed some phenomena there. Piopt had highly positive correlation with the population density of amylolytie bacterioplankton($R^2$=0.84) and that of lipolytic bacterioplankton($R^2$=0.70) while total heterotrophic bacterioplankton and proteolytic bacterioplankton had lesser correlations with Piopt. From the regression lines the increase of unit Piopt (mgC/$m^3$/hr) in the study area was calculated to mean the increase of $9.0{\times}10$ cells/ml and $8.0{\times}10$ cells/ml of amylolytic bacterioplankton and lipolytic bacterioplankton, respectively.

Final biomass yields (peak optical density) and growth rates (divisions/day) of seven clones of Skeletonema costatum from Korean coastal waters were measured to understand their intraspecific variations in the light intensity niche component under 25$^{\circ}C$ condition. Daily growth rates of 6 out of 7 S. costatum clones were maximum at 6000 lux while that of YS4, a neritic clone, was maximum at 9000 lux. The final biomass yields of 4 out of the 7 s. costatum clones were maximum at the lowest light intensity of 2000 lux. Minimum final biomass yields were found at 9000 lux in all the S. costatum clones other than an estuarine clone, HDC9. The intraspecific variations of the mean growth rate and mean final biomass yield under each of the three different light intensities in terms of the coefficient of variation were not greater than 10% in any of the 7 S. costatum clones.
Iron-Limited Biomass Yields of Marine Phytoplankton Clones
YIH, WONHO,BRAND, LARRY E. The Korean Society of Oceanography Vol.28 No.2
The final biomass yields of 16 marine phytoplankton clones were measured in media with different levels of iron and phosphorus concentrations. The biomass yields of oceanic clones were either only slightly limited or not limited by iron, and those of coastal clones were severely limited by iron in all photogenetic groups other than cyanobacteria. By contrast oceanic cyanobacteria clones as well as coastal clones required higher iron concentrations: minimum concentrations of iron addition for detectable growth of the Synchronous species were estimated to fall between $10^{-9}{\;}and{\;}10^{-8}{\;}M$. Not only the habitat differences (oceanic-coastal trends) but also the photogenetic differences of the oceanic phytoplankton species in the response to the iron enrichments deserve very careful attention before ocean iron fertilization.

Seawater temperature, salinity, inorganic nutrients and the standing crop of phytoplankton species of the 841 water samples from the upper 125 m at 15-40 stations on the 6 semiannual cruises in the southwestern waters of the East Sea (Korea) were studied during the period from September, 1981 to October, 1984, Among the 235 taxa identified two pennate diatioms, cylindrotheca closterium and Nitzschia delicatissima, were the most common and dominant species. The multiple regression analyses between net phytoplankton abundance (dependent variable) and associated environmental factors(independent variables) were applied to the samples from the surface mixed-layer. In spring the coefficients for the seawater temperature was 1. to 4.2 times greater than those for salinity, while the coefficients for the salinity was 2.1 to 3.4 times greater than those for seawater temperature in autumn. Distribution seawater temperature in spring, and salinity in autumn. Schematically the zone of high standing crops moved about on the T-S diagram in a cyclic manner. The distribution of phytoplankton standing crop was quite closely associated with the hydrographic conditions among various kinds of environmental factors studied.

Yellow nail syndrome is characterized by yellow discoloration of nails, chrnnic lymphedema and respiratory dieorders such as chronic bronehitis, bronchiectasis, pleural effusion and chronic sinusitis. Other changes of nail in this syndrome are the exaggerated lateral curvature and disappearance of lunula and cuticle. These nail changes are caused by greatly slow nail growth than in normal due to the defective lymphatic drainage. We report a case of yellow nail syndrome in a 55 year-old woman who has pulmanary edema, congestive heart failure for 3 years, and yellow naiIs of all fingers and toes for 1 year.
