Height of elevated fetal buttock for prediction of successful external cephalic version

Objective To increase the rate of successful external cephalic version (ECV) and to minimize the complications, it is important to identify the predictors of success. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate whether the height of the elevated fetal buttock (HOB) is a valuable predictor of successful ECV or not. Methods This prospective study was conducted from August 2016 to June 2018. A total of 139 pregnant women with breech presentation were enrolled in the study. HOB from the maternal pubic symphysis was measured on ultrasonography. The predictability and cut-off value of HOB for successful ECV were evaluated. Results Among the 139 patients, 114 (82%) had successful ECV. The adjusted odds ratio for multiparity, amniotic fluid index (AFI) >14 cm, and HOB >7.8 cm were 10.80 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.57-74.94), 5.26 (95% CI, 1.06-26.19), and 10.50 (95% CI, 1.03-107.12), respectively. Areas under the curve (AUCs) for AFI, HOB, and parity were 0.66 (95% CI, 0.54-0.78), 0.74 (95% CI, 0.64-0.85), and 0.69 (95% CI, 0.62-0.76), respectively. HOB had the largest AUC, but there were no significant differences among the AUCs of other factors. The cut-off value of HOB was 6 cm. Conclusion This study showed that the AUC of HOB was greater than that of parity and AFI, although it was not statistically significant. As HOB is a noninvasive and comprehensive marker to predict successful ECV, consideration of HOB would be helpful before conducting ECV. Further studies are needed.
금정산-백양산일대 약수의 물리화학적 성분의 공간적 분포 특성

Spring waters at sixty sites and well waters at six wells in Mt. Geumjeong-Baekyang area were investigated for measuring nine items(temperature, pH, Eh, EC, TDS,DO, salinity, alkalinity,and discharge rate) in spring of year 2000 and winter of year 2001. General statistics was carried out to analyze statistical characteristics of data. To compare each item with one another, regression analysis was carried out . Kinging was used to estimate the spatial characteristics and continuity of data in the study area. The kriged isopleth maps of DO, pH, temperaturem, EH,EC TDS, salinity, alkalinity and discharge rate show different appearance at same sites in spring and winter, respectively.

This experiment was carried out to investigate the appropriate chilling requirements for breaking dormancy by treating the dormant plant of Hanabusaya asiatica with low temperature ($4^{\circ}C$) for different time periods. The rates of sprouting and flowering were higher with longer treatment periods at low temperature. In addition, the growth and flowering of the plant were better when it was potted after treatment at a low temperature for 90 days. The abscisic acid levels and polyphenoloxidase activity of the dormant plant increased during the low temperature treatment, reached a climax 90 days and decreased thereafter. The catalase activity was the lowest after the low temperature treatment for 90 days and increased subsequently. The peroxidase activity increased and showed a sharp rise after the low temperature treatment for more than 90 days. Considering the physiological activities of the enzymes, the changes in the abscisic acid levels, and the characteristics of growth and flowering after sprouting of the plant, the appropriate cold periods required for breaking dormancy could be 90 days.

<P>Wrinkling is a well-known example of instability-driven surface deformation that occurs when the accumulated compressive stress exceeds the critical value in multilayered systems. A number of studies have investigated the instability conditions and the corresponding mechanisms of wrinkling deformation. Force balance analysis of bilayer systems, in which the thickness of the capping layer is importantly considered, has offered a useful approach for the quantitative understanding of wrinkling. However, it is inappropriate for multilayer wrinkling (layer number > 3) consisting of heterogeneous materials (<I>e.g.</I> polymer/metal or inorganic), in which the thickness variation in the substrate is also crucial. Therefore, to accommodate the additive characteristics of multilayered systems, we thermally treated tri- or quad-layer samples of polymer/metal multilayers to generate surface wrinkles and used a cumulative energy balance analysis to consider the individual contribution of each constituent layer. Unlike the composite layer model, wherein the thickness effect of the capping layer is highly overestimated for heterogenously stacked multilayers, our approach precisely reflects the bending energy contribution of the given multilayer system, with results that match well with experimental values. Furthermore, we demonstrate the feasibility of this approach as a metrological tool for simple and straightforward estimation of the thermomechanical properties of polymers, whereby a delicate change in the Young's modulus of a thin polymeric layer near its glass transition temperature can be successfully monitored.</P>

Whole genome amplification (WGA) method to analyze several genes at the same time has become an important issue in prenatal and preimplantation genetic diagnosis. Each 5 amniocytes obtained from 50 pregnant women was preamplified by primer extension preamplification (PEP) and degenerate oligonucleotide primed (DOP)-PCR. From a small aliquot of the each WGA products, we amplified the X-, Y-centromeric sequences, dystrophin gene exon 46 of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and survival motor neuron (SMN) gene exon 7 of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) simultaneously. Compared in 25 male fetuses confirmed with chromosome analysis after two weeks, the detection rates of PEP and DOP methods were 96 and 68 percent in Y-specific amplification, respectively. The amplification rates of X-centromeric region were 100 and 96 percent in PEP and DOP, respectively; 66 and 52 percent of dystrophin gene exon 46; 74 and 46 percent of SMN gene exon 7. Contaminated DNA sequences and false positive for female cells in Y-specific PCR were not detected. This study indicates that the efficiency of PEP was significantly greater than that of DOP in Y-specific and SMN gene (p<0.05).

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of positron emission tomography with 2-[F-18] fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose in discrimination of response in the nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients who treated with radiotherapy. Methods and Materials: Twenty-four patients who underwent FDG-PET scan before and after radiotherapy for no disseminated head and neck carcinoma at the Asan Medical Center between August 2001 and September 2002 were evaluate by prospective analysis. First FDG-PET scan performed before radiotherapy within 1 month, and second FDG-PET scan performed 1 month after radiotherapy. FDG-PET images were analyzed by standard uptake value (SUV). Follow-up period was more than 6 months. Results: The pretreatment SUV was 3.4-14.0 (median: 6.0) and posttreatment SUV was ground level-7.7 (median: 2.0). The overall sensitivity and specicity of FDG-PET to evaluate residual tumors in the nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients were 94% and 94%. Conclusion: FDG-PET is effective in evaluation of radiation response in the nasopharyngeal carcinoma. We think that the timing of one month after finished radiotherapy FDG-PET scan was not too fast to evaluation of radiation response.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to analyze parental decisions regarding pregnancies in which the fetus had sex chromosome abnormalities (SCA) over a ten-year period. Materials and Methods: We collected and reviewed records from our hospital for 2001-2010 and a genetic specialist provided-genetic counseling. Results: We diagnosed 130 cases (0.71%) with SCA out of 18,376 prenatal cases from 2001 to 2010. We reviewed the records and the results of all pregnancies. We also included cases (n=84) of apparently normal anatomic fetuses to analyze the factors influencing parental decisions. We excluded 34 cases with an obvious anomaly or a presumably bad outcome and 12 cases that were not followed up. Forty-three couples (51.2%) continued their pregnancies while forty-one (48.8%) terminated them. Of 38 mosaicism cases, 21 (55.3%) were continued. Among the 20 pregnancies assisted by reproductive techniques, 15 (75%) were continued (P=0.02). More pregnancies were continued when genetic counseling was provided (61.9%) compared to cases in which it was not provided (19%) (P=0.01). Conclusion: Genetic counseling is important in providing appropriate information to parents. Establishing guidelines and protocols will help both obstetricians and parents to make informed decisions.
