As a technique mainly hiring in forensic investigation field to identify the descents, craniofacial reconstruction (CFR) is also used in archaeology to create the faces from ancient or medieval human remains, when there is little informationabout his/her appearance. Eung-Cheok Ko (1531–1605) was a writer and scholar in the mid Joseon period. In January of 2019, His mummified body was found at Gumi, Kyeonsangbuk-do, Korea. The remains were anthropologically examined, and archaeological CFR was also requested for this case. This report reveals the case’s facial reconstruction process and his portrait that is drawn based on the 3-dimensional CFR result.

Recently, various immunosuppressant drugs have been shown to induce hair growth in normal hair as well as in alopecia areata and androgenic alopecia; however, the responsible mechanism has not yet been fully elucidated. In this study, we investigate the influence of mycophenolate (MPA), an immunosuppressant, on the proliferation of human dermal papilla cells (hDPCs) and on the growth of human hair follicles following catagen induction with interferon (IFN)-γ. IFN-γ was found to reduce β-catenin, an activator of hair follicle growth, and activate glycogen synthase kinase (GSK)-3β, and enhance expression of the Wnt inhibitor DKK-1 and catagen inducer transforming growth factor (TGF)-β2. IFN-γ inhibited expression of ALP and other dermal papillar cells (DPCs) markers such as Axin2, IGF-1, and FGF 7 and 10. MPA increased β-catenin in IFN-γ-treated hDPCs leading to its nuclear accumulation via inhibition of GSK3β and reduction of DKK-1. Furthermore, MPA significantly increased expression of ALP and other DPC marker genes but inhibited expression of TGF-β2. Therefore, we demonstrate for the first time that IFN-γ induces catagen-like changes in hDPCs and in hair follicles via inhibition of Wnt/β-catenin signaling, and that MPA stabilizes β-catenin by inhibiting GSK3β leading to increased β-catenin target gene and DP signature gene expression, which may, in part, counteract IFN-γ-induced catagen in hDPCs.

The Asian Society of Gynecologic Oncology International Workshop 2014 on gynecologic oncology was held in Asan Medical Center, Seoul, Korea on the 23rd to 24th August 2014. A total of 179 participants from 17 countries participated in the workshop, and the up-to-date findings on the management of gynecologic cancers were presented and discussed. This meeting focused on the new trends in the management of cervical cancer, fertility-sparing management of gynecologic cancers, surgical management of gynecologic cancers, and recent advances in translational research on gynecologic cancers.

Extracts of Hordeum vulgare and Chrysanthemum zawadskii, two traditional herbal medicines, have long been used to treat women’s diseases. Our previous studies have confirmed that these extracts could help relieve the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome by inhibiting prolactin release. A mixture of these natural products was named Lomens-P0. In this study, we conducted three genotoxicity tests (bacterial reverse mutation, mammalian chromosome aberration, and mammalian erythrocyte micronucleus studies) and four oral toxicity tests (single-dose, 2-week repeated-dose, and 13-week repeated-dose studies in rodents, and a single-dose dose-escalation toxicity study in a non-rodent model) to confirm the potential toxicity and safety of Lomens-P0. The results of this series of tests indicated Lomens-P0 did not induce genotoxicity, and the NOAEL for the rodent was 2000 mg/kg BW/day. Similarly, no toxic effects were evident in the single-dose-escalation study in the nonrodent model. In conclusion, we confirmed that Lomens-P0 might have potential utility as a raw material for nutraceuticals and natural medicines.

One-dimensional photonic crystals based on the periodic stacking of two different dielectric layers have been widely studied, but the fabrication of mechanically flexible polymer structural color (SC) films, with electro-active color switching, remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate free-standing electric field tunable ionic liquid (IL) swollen block copolymer (BCP) films. Placement of a polymer/ionic liquid film-reservoir adjacent to a self-assembled poly(styrene-block-quaternized 2-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-QP2VP) copolymer SC film allowed the development of red (R), green (G), and blue (B) full-color SC block copolymer films by swelling of the QP2VP domains by the ionic liquid associated with water molecules. The IL–polymer/BCP SC film is mechanically flexible with excellent color stability over several days at ambient conditions. The selective swelling of the QP2VP domains could be controlled by both the ratio of the IL to a polymer in the gel-like IL reservoir layer and by an applied voltage in the range of −3 to +6 V using a metal/IL reservoir/SC film/IL reservoir/metal capacitor type device.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

Amebiasis is observed worldwide. Usual symptoms of amebiasis include bloody stool, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever and weight loss. Severe form of amebiasis is associated with perforation, pseudopolyp, peritonitis, toxic megacolon and ameboma. An ameboma represents a localized amebic infection with organized granulation tissue and is almost found in cecum and rectum. We report a case of ameboma of rectum detected incidentally without specific symptom, with review of relevant literature. (Intestinal Research 2003;1:68-71)
