        Overexpression of Zoysia ZjCIGR1 gene confers cold stress resistance to zoysiagrass

        Zoysia japonica Steud. is a warm-season lawn grass popular in Korea and elsewhere. They are cultivated in many places such as river banks, roadside, and play grounds. However, there still is a disadvantage of frequent mowing, and the grass grows poorly under the chilly conditions. To develop a grass variety that circumvents these drawbacks, we cloned the chitininducible gibberellins-responsive1 gene (CIGR1) from zoysiagrass. The full length of the ZjCIGR1 (Zj; Zoysia japonica Steud.) gene was obtained by 5′/3′ RACE PCR and the phylogenetic tree showed that it belonged to the CIGR1-subgroup in the PAT1-group of GRAS protein family. Expression of the ZjCIGR1 in wild-type plants was confirmed in roots, meristems, leaves, and flowers, especially high in the flowers. The transgenic zoysiagrass was confirmed by PCR using gene-specific primers, phosphinothricin-acetyl-transferase (PAT) strip test, and Southern blot analysis. ZjCIGR1-overexpressing plants acquired tolerance to cold stress displaying morphological phenotypes characteristic of stress resistance. In addition, in the transformants, expression of the ZjCIGR1 as well as cold-regulated (COR) gene was increased compared to the wild-type plants under cold stress condition. These results suggest that ZjCIGR1 gene is an important candidate for regulating cold stress resistance.

        Cone-beam CT를 이용한 제II급 부정교합 아동의 상기도 형태에 관한 3차원적 연구

        Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the volumes and areas of the upper airways in children with Class II malocclusion, using three dimensional cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and to compare the volumetric and cross-sectional measurements and cephalometric variables to investigate possible relationships between the upper airway and facial morphology. Methods: CBCT scans were obtained from 37 subjects (17 boys and 20 girls; average age, 11.02 years). The upper airway volumes and areas were measured, and compared with cephalometric variables. Results: The area of the PNS-posterior plane (SPP) was significantly smaller in the Class II malocclusion group (p < 0.05). Also, the volumetric and cross-sectional measurements were lower in Class II than in Class I malocclusion groups, although the differences were not significant between the two groups (p > 0.05). The Class II malocclusion group showed significantly smaller values of PFH, mandibular body length, pog to N perp and showed larger values of FMA, ANB, and facial convexity than the Class I malocclusion group. The volume of the upper airway in front of PNS point (WN) showed negative correlation with ANB (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The Class II malocclusion group had a narrower upper airway associated with a decreased posterior facial height and a divergent growth pattern than the Class I malocclusion group. 성장기 아동의 상기도 협착은 두개안면 성장에 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 본 연구는 3차원 cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT)를 이용하여 제II급 부정교합 아동의 상기도 부피 및 단면적 계측치와 측모두부계측치를 비교하여 상기도와 안면 형태와의 연관성을 알아보고자 하였다. 37명의 아동(남자 17명, 여자 20명, 평균 연령 11.02세)의 CBCT를 촬영하였다. 연구 결과, 상기도의 PNS-posterior plane에서의 단면적(S_(PP))은 제II급 부정교합군에서 유의하게 작았다 (p < 0.05). 상기도 부피 계측치는 제II급 부정교합군에서 제I급 부정교합군보다 작았으나, 두 군 간 통계적으로 유의한 차이는 없었다. 제II급 부정교합군은 후안모고경(PFH), mandibular body length (p < 0.05), Pog to N perp (p < 0.01)에서 제I급 부정교합군보다 유의하게 작은 값을 보였고, FMA (p < 0.05), ANB, facial convexity (p < 0.01)는 유의하게 큰 값을 보였다. 제II급 부정교합군의 PNS 전방의 상기도 부피(W_(N))는 ANB difference 각도와 음의 상관관계를 보였다 (p < 0.05). 제II급 부정교합 아동은 상대적으로 좁은 상기도 부피를 가지며 이에 따른 감소된 후안모고경(PFH)과 하악골의 divergent한 안면 성장 양상을 보였다.

        기질 특성이 청소년기 비행행동에 미치는 영향

        Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of the temperament and character of juvenile delinquents, and to explore the effect of those factors on juvenile delinquent behavior. Methods : 128 male and 29 female juvenile delinquents on probation, and 66 male and 69 female students in the lOth and the 11th grade, completed Junior Temperament and Character Inventory (JTCI), anxiety, depression scales and Latent Delinquency Questionnaire. Results : Male juvenile delinquents showed significantly higher 'novelty seeking', and lower 'harm avoidance' and 'persistence' in JTCI subscales, compared to normal control group. Stepwise multiple-regression analysis showed that 'novelty seeking'and 'harm avoidance' were significantly predicting juvenile delinquent behavior. In the case of the female adolescents, delinquent group was significantly lower 'harm avoidance' than normal groups, and stepwise multiple regression analysis showed 'self-transcendence' was the only significant predicting variable for juvenile delinquent behavior. Conclusion : Based on the results, temperament was related to the juvenile delinquent behavior especially for male delinquent adolescents.

        경도인지장애 환자에서 복합-일상활동의 제한

        Objectives : Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is distinguished from mild dementia by an absence of global intellectual deterioration and the preservation of activities of daily living (ADL). Recently, however, it became apparent that impairment of instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) is present before the threshold of dementia is reached. Thus, we want to examine whether IADL are impaired in patients with MCI, and which items of IADL are particularly involved. We divided the MCI group into amnestic (aMCI) and non-amnestic MCI (naMCI), and compared to the cognitively nonnal controls. In this study, we focused on the instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). Methods : The sample consisted of 69 community-dwelling older adults from a welfare center for the aged in Korea. The subjects were divided into three diagnostic groups; aMCI [N=19, memory domains below -1.5 standard deviation (SD)], naMCI (N= 19, other cognitive domains below -1.5 SD, except memory domains) and cognitive normal controls (N=31). Subjects were assessed both on IADL and the cognitive function. In order to assess the IADL, we used the Seoul -Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (S-IADL). Included measures of cognitive tests are as follows ; Seoul Verbal Learning Test (SVLT), Rey Complex Figure Test (RCFT), Korean-Boston Naming Test (K-BNT), Stroop test, and Korean-Mini Mental Status Examination (K-MMSE). Groups were compared on the S-IADL and the cognitive tests. Results : The three groups did not differ in the mean age, gender distribution and years of education. S-IADL were shown to be different between the groups in this study. Suects with aMCI were significantly more impaired in S-IADL in comparison to the controls [F (2,50) = 4.251, P=0.020]. And on four items ofS-IADL (shopping, transportation, medication and talking about recent events), subjects with aMCI showed higher impairment compared to the controls. However, the S-IADL did not differ between the subjects with naMCI and controls. Conclusion : In this study, impairment of S-IADL was shown in subjects with aMCI. And S-IADL ofnaMCI was not Significantly differed from aMCI and controls. The results suggest that naMCI would be distinguished from aMCI in characteristics and prognosis.

        제4경추의 형태와 초경을 통한 성숙지표에 관한 연구

        본 연구는 측모 두부 규격 방사선사진을 이용하여 성장 중인 아동의 제4경추 형태를 경추 몸체부 하연의 만곡 정도에 따라 분류하고 초경의 시기와 수완부 골 성숙 단계를 평가하여, 성장 중인 아동의 골격적 부정교합의 진단 및 악정형 치료를 위한 성장 시기 평가에 제4경추의 형태 변화가 진단의 참고자료로 활용될 수 있는지를 연구하였다. 11-14세 여자 환자 중, 같은 날짜에 촬영된 측모 두부 규격 방사선사진과 수완부 방사선사진이 모두 있는 81명을 대상으로 환자의 측모 두부 규격 방사선사진상 제4경추 몸체부 하연의 만곡 정도에 따라 세 그룹으로 분류하였다. (Group A - 제4경추 몸체부 하연의 만곡 정도가 1.05 mm 이하, Group B -제4경추 몸체부 하연의 만곡 정도가 1.05- 2.07 mm 사이, Group C -제4경추 몸체부 하연의 만곡 정도가 2.07 mm 이상)세 그룹에서 각각 제4경추 몸체부의 수직 길이, 수평 길이, 수직/수평 비율, 초경의 시기, 수완부 골 성숙 단계를 측정한 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 평균 수완부 골 성숙 단계는 Group A가 SMI 5.67 ± 2.57단계, Group B는 SMI 8,73 ± 2.41 단계, Group C는 SMI 10.00 ± 1.47단계로 나타났다. GroupA에서 Group B, Group C로 갈수록 제4경추의 수직 길이, 수평 길이, 수직/수평 비율, 수완부 골 성숙 단계에 있어서 각각 유의하게 더 큰 값을 보였다. 본 연구대상 아동의 평균 초경 시기는 11.64 ± 0.92세를 보였다. 제4경추 몸체부 하연의 만곡 정도, 수직 길이, 수평 길이, 수직/수평 비율은 수완부 골 성숙 단계와 각각 서로 유의한 양의 상관관계를 나타냈다. 초경을 경험한 그룹이 초경을 경험하지 않은 그룹에 비해 제4경추의 수직 길이, 수평 길이, 수직/수평 비율, 수완부 골 성숙 단계에 있어서 유의하게 큰 값을 보였다. 연구 결과 측모 두부 규격 방사선사진상 제4경추 하연의 만곡 깊이가 2.07 mm 이상인 경우 성장의 완료 단계에 가까운 시기로 나타나 이 시기의 악정형적 치료는 큰 효과를 얻을 수 없을 것으로 사료된다. Objective: This study analyzed the morphologic changes of the fourth cervical vertebra body to determine the skeletal age of orthodontic patients during growth. Methods: Eighty-one female patients aged from 11 to 14 who had cephalograms taken on the same day were examined. The subjects were divided into three groups depending on the depth of the concavity of the lower border of the fourth cervical vertebra (Group A: less than 1.05 mm, Group B: 1.05 - 2.07 mm, Group C: greater than 2.07 mm). Menarcheal timing, SMI stage, length, width and ratio of length and width of the fourth cervical vertebra body were analyzed and the following results were obtained. Results: The average SMI stage of group A,B and C were 5.67 ± 2.57, 8.73 ± 2.41, and 10.00 ± 1.47, respectively. Length, width, ratio of length and width, and SMI stage were greater in group B than group A and in group C than group B. Mean menarcheal timing was 11.64 ± 0.92 years. Concavity depth, length, width, ratio of length and width showed a significant positive correlation with SMI stage, especially with the concavity depth. Conclusion: The results of this study propose a simple method for determining the timing of orthopedic treatment by measuring the concavity depth of the fourth cervical vertebra on the cephalogram.

      • 나사형 임플란트 고정체의 길이, 직경, 플랫폼 형태에 따른 임플란트와 주위조직의 응력분포

        Seven finite element models were constructed in mandible having single screw-type implant fixture connected to the second premolar-shaped superstructure, in order to evaluate how the length, diameter and platform shape of a screw-type fixture influence the stress in the supporting tissue around fixtures. The superstructure were made using UCLA abutment, and connected to the fixture with abutment screw. Each finite element model was varied in terms of length, diameter, and platform shape of the fixture according to the commercial fixture(3i Implant Innovations Inc, Palm Beach Gardens, FL33410, USA) while the superstructure and the mandible with a single fixture placed in it shared no difference in terms of appearance. In each model, 250N of vertical load was placed on the central pit of an occlusal plane and 250N of oblique load placed on the buccal cusp. The stress distribution in the supporting tissue and the other components was analysed using 2-dimensional Finite element analysis and the maximum stress in each reference area was compared. 1. Under lateral loading, the stress was larger in the larger in the abutment/fixture interface, and in the crestal bone, compared to the stress pattern under vertical loading. 2. The amount of stress at the superstructure was similar regardless of the length, diameter and platform shape of a fixture. 3. Around the longer fixture, the stress was decreased at the bone crest and subjacent cancellous bone and increased in the cancellous bone area apical to the fixture. 4. Around the wider fixture, the stress was decreased at the abutment/fixture interface, and the bone crest and increased in the cancellous bone area apical to the fixture. 5. Around the fixture having wider platform, less stress was resulted at the abutnent/fixture interface and the upper part of the cortical bone, compared to the fixture having standard platform. In short, the stress distribution of the supporting tissue was affected by length, diameter, and platform shape of a fixture, and the fixture which was larger in diameter and length could reduce the stress in the supporting tissues at the bone-fixture interface and bone crest area.

      • 가묘 유구치의 실험적 치수노출후 분지부 부관 부위의 치주조직 변화에 관한 연구

        The lesions that involve the furcation region of multirooted teeth may have an endodontic as well as a periodontal origin. Many authors have indicated the interrelationship of the pulp and the periodontium. The infection may be passed between the two through the apical and lateral or accessory canals. Infected deciduous molars display different roentgenographic findings from those of permanent molars. While pathologic changes are seen roentgenographically at the root apex of the permanent molar, the pathologic changes are evidenced by a radiolucent zone between the roots in the deciduous molar. In order to investigate the reasons for this interradicular rarefaction in the deciduous dentition, experimental pulpal exposures were made in the mesiobuccal pulp horn of mandibular second deciduous molars of the kittens with no. 1/2 round bur. The kittens were from 10 to 15 weeks of age and were divided into two groups, 10 experimental groups and 1 control group. The animals were sacrificed in the regular interval from 2 to 20 days after pulpal exposure. The specimens were observed by the light microscope and intraoral standard radiograph. The results were as follows : 1. Radiographically, normal interradicular periodontal membrane and inter-radicular bone were shown in control group. In the animal sacrificed after 20 days, a definite thickening of the interradicular rarefaction were observed. 2. Light-microscopically, operated teeth had accessory canals(75%) running from pulp chamber to the periodontium in the bifurcation region. 3. The pulpal changes of lower 2nd deciduous molar with accessory canal were followed by changes in the periodontium at the opening of accessory canal. These changes led to pathologic destruction of much of the pulp tissue together with inflammation of periodontium in the bifurcation. But pathologic changes was not seen at root canal and apex. 4. Pulpal inflammatory changes of lower 2nd deciduous molar without accessory canals were confined to the area beneath the exposure or to the coronal part of mesial root canal. 5. In the mandibular 1st and 2nd deciduous molars without pulpal exposure and 1st deciduous molars of experimental group, the pulp, periodontium in the bifurcation, and apical regions were normal. From the above results, it is suggested that accessory canals play a major role causing furcation lesion following experimental pulpal exposure in deciduous molar in kittens.

        교정치료에 따른 사춘기 성장 아동의 상기도 폭경과 안면 성장 변화와의 관계 연구

        본 연구의 목적은 아동에서 사춘기 성장 동안 기도의 변화가 안면 성장에 미치는 영향을 평가하는 것이었다. 9 - 11세(평균 10.7세)의 교정환자 36명을 대상으로 하여 초진 시(T1)와 치료 종료 시(T2)에 각각 측모두부방사선사진과 수완부 방사선 사진을 촬영하였다. 측모두부방사선사진상의 기도 폭경을 기준으로 하여 대상을 세 그룹으로 나누었다; 폭경이 좁은 그룹(AW-Narrow: 5.2 - 8.6 mm), 중간 그룹(AW-Medium: 8.9 - 11.5 mm), 넓은 그룹(AW-Wide: 11.7 - 16.0 mm). T1과 T2시기에 각 그룹 간의 안면 계측치의 차이를 비교하였으며 T1 - T2 사이의 계측치의 변화량을 각 그룹별로 비교하여 성장을 평가하였다. 각 그룹의 기도 폭경 증가량은 AW-Narrow, AW-Medium, AW-Wide group에서 각각 4.55 mm, 3.84 mm, 1.94 mm였으며 통계적으로 유의한 차이를 보였다. T1시기의 각 그룹 간의 비교에서 AW-Narrow group에서 다른 그룹에 비해 PFH가 유의하게 작은 값을 나타냈다. T1 - T2 사이의 성장 평가에서는 AW-Narrow group에서 다른 그룹에 비해 PFH/AFH, facial axis, ANS (T1 - T2), and Gn (T1 - T2)의 변화가 유의하게 큰 값을 보였다. 이 시기의 안면 성장 기간 동안 기도 폭경이 좁은 그룹에서 기도 폭경 및 안면 성장의 보상성 변화가 일어난 것으로 생각된다. 바람직하지 않은 안면 성장을 예방하기 위한 외과적 기도 처치를 고려할 때 자발적인 개선 가능성을 고려하여 좀 더 신중한 평가가 필요할 것으로 생각된다. Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate how airway changes influence facial growth during puberty in Korean children. Methods: Thirty-six patients aged 9 to 11 (mean age: 10.7 years) were selected. Cephalograms and hand-wrist x-rays were taken at pre-treatment (T1) and post-treatment (T2). The sample was divided into narrow (5.2 . 8.6 mm, AW-Narrow), medium (8.9 . 11.5 mm, AW-Medium), and wide (11.7 . 16.0 mm, AW-Wide) groups according to the airway width at T1. Cephalometric measurements at T1, T2 and growth from T1 to T2 were compared between groups. Results: The degree of increase in airway size in each group was 4.55 mm, 3.84 mm and 1.94 mm in the AW-Narrow, AW-Medium, and AW-Wide groups, respectively. Moreover, the differences were statistically significant. The significant smallest posterior facial height was found in the AW-Narrow group at T1. For the growth values from T1 to T2, the AW-Narrow group showed significantly larger values of PFH/AFH, facial axis, ANS (T1 - T2), and Gn (T1 - T2) than the AW-Medium group. Conclusions: The compensational changes in the airway width and facial growth were found in the narrow group. Surgical approach of the airway to prevent unfavorable facial growth in these years of age should be carried out, but with careful deliberation because these problems may be improved naturally.
