        An 8-Week Low-Intensity Progressive Cycling Training Improves Motor Functions in Patients with Early-Stage Parkinson’s Disease

        Background and Purpose The effects of high-intensity cycling as an adjuvant therapy forearly-stage Parkinson’s disease (PD) were highlighted recently. However, patients experience difficultiesin maintaining these cycling training programs. The present study investigated the efficacyof cycling at a mild-to-moderate intensity in early-stage PD. Methods Thirteen PD patients were enrolled for 16 serial cycling sessions over a 2-month period. Motor function was assessed using the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale part III(UPDRS III) and Timed Up and Go (TUG) test as primary outcomes. The Montreal CognitiveAssessment (MoCA), modified Hoehn and Yahr Stage (mHYS), total UPDRS, Falls EfficacyScale, New Freezing of Gait Questionnaire, Schwab and England Activities of Daily Living, 39-item Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire, Patient Global Impression of Change, and gait performancewere assessed as secondary outcomes. Results The age and the age at onset were 59.67±7.24 and 53.23±10.26 years (mean±SD), respectively. The cycling cadence was 53.27±8.92 revolutions per minute. The UPDRS III scoreimproved significantly after 8 training sessions (p=0.011) and 16 training sessions (T2) (p=0.001) in the off-state, and at T2 (p=0.004) in the on-state compared to pretraining (T0). TheTUG duration was significantly shorter at T2 than at T0 (p<0.05). The findings of MoCA, totalUPDRS, double limb support time, and mHYS (in both the off- and on-states) also improvedsignificantly at T2. Conclusions Our pioneer study has demonstrated that a low-intensity progressive cycling exercisecan improve motor function in PD, especially akinesia. The beneficial effects were similarto those of high-intensity rehabilitation programs.

        한자의 심미적 특징에 기초한 한자 디자인 응용 연구 - 근태강(靳埭强) 작품을 연구 대상으로 -

        연구배경 문자는 문화를 전승하는데 중요한 매개체로서, 한 민족의 내재된 심미적 정취와 사고방식을 담고 있는 민족 문화와 정신이 집중된 표현이다. 한자는 중국에서 고대부터 지금까지 오래 전승된 옛 문자이자, 오늘날 세계에서 널리 사용되고 있는 유일한 표의문자로, 디자인 분야에서 지속적으로 중요시했던 디자인 자원이다. 연구방법 본 논문에서는 형태, 구조, 의미의 세 가지 관점에서 한자의 발전 경로 서술을 시작으로, 한자의 세가지 심미적 특징을 다루고, 근태강(靳埭强) 선생의 디자인 작품에 대한 분석을 통해, 한자의 심미적 특징이 현대 디자인에서 어떻게 응용되고 있는지를 살펴봄으로써, 한자의 아름다움이 오늘날 디자인에서 표현되는 경로와 특징을 탐색하였다. 연구결과 한자의 세 가지 심미적 특징을 통해 한자와 현대적 디자인을 적극적으로 융합한 근태강 선생 작품을 분석하여, 중국적 정취를 공유하고 있는 작품의 경우 위 분석틀이 유의미한 결과물을 도출할 수 있다는 사실을 알게 되었다. 결론 한자의 심미적 특징은 중국 디자인에서 중요한 미학적 임무를 수행하고 있으며, 중국의 현대 디자인 작품을 이해하는 데 유의미한 참조점으로 기능한다. Background As an important carrier of cultural inheritance, characters contain a nation's inherent aesthetic taste and way of thinking, which is the concentrated reflection of a nation's culture and spirit. As an ancient Chinese character, Chinese characters that has been handed down since ancient times are the only ideographic characters widely used in the world. Methods Taking the development path of Chinese characters as the clue, this paper expounds the three aesthetic characteristics of Chinese characters. Through the analysis of the design works of Kan TaiKeung, I observed the application of the aesthetic characteristics of Chinese characters in modern design from the perspectives of form, structure and semantics, so as to explore the expression path of the beauty of Chinese characters in today's design. Result The analysis of Kan TaiKeung’s works with three aesthetic characteristics of Chinese characters, this paper draws an conclustion that the works which is based on Chinese culture can be analyzed successfully with the frame. Conclusion The aesthetic characteristics of Chinese character serves a significant position in Chinese design, and it is a great reference to understand other chinese design works which share chinese cultural background.

        고맥락 문화 차원에서 한자 의미의 심미적 특징 연구

        중국은 전형적인 고맥락 문화 국가로서, 이러한 측면에서 중국인의 표현 방식에는 중국만의 고유한 특징이 있습니다. 한자는 중국 문명의 전승과 사상의 전파, 그리고 일상의 교류를 위한 중요한 매개체이자 언어 환경의 중요한 구성부분으로서, 독특한 구조와 표현체계가 존재합니다. 특히, 의미에 있어서 저맥락 문화 국가의 문자와는 확연히 다른 성질을 지니고 있는데, 내포된 의미의 다양성과 그 의미의 변화가능성 등이 그 특징이다. 한편, 중국의 예술 디자인 분야에서는 한자를 핵심디자인 요소로 활용한 작품들이 늘어나는 추세이다. 이러한 작품들은 한자의 형태, 구조, 의미, 매개 등 서로 다른 측면을 통해 한자의 아름다움을 보여주고 있다. 그 중에서도 한자 의미의 특징을 응용한 작품들은 특히 그 함의가 풍부하다. 그렇다면 한자는 고맥락 언어적 관점에서 어떤 특징을 지니고 있으며, 이러한 특징들은 어떻게 현대 디자인 작품에 적용되고 있는지를 고찰하는 것이 본 연구의 목적이다. 본 연구는 관련 문헌의 수집과 정리를 통해 위에서 제기한 문제에 대한 분석을 진행하였다. 우선 고맥락문화의 개념 및 특징을 정리하고 고맥락 문화 차원에서 한자의 철학과 사회적 요소에 대해 고찰한다. 이어서 한자의 의미가 가지는 심미적 특징을 고맥락 문화의 관점에서 종합적으로 개괄함으로써 한자 의미의 심미적 특징인 ‘함축’, ‘허실’, ‘은유’의 3가지 핵심요소를 도출하였다. 마지막으로 한자의 의미를 주제로 한 시각디자인 작품을 선별하여 한자 의미의 심미적 특징 3요소가 현대 디자인에서 어떻게 활용되고 있는지 분석하였다. 이상의 방법을 통해 본 연구는 한자의 의미를 주제로 하여 그 심미적 특징을 표현하는 디자인 응용에 참고 자료를 제공하고자 한다. China is a typical country with high-context culture, so the way Chinese people express themselves at this level is unique. Chinese characters inherit civilization, record ideas, and serve as an important medium for daily communication. Especially in the semantic sense, it shows a completely different temperament from the countries that use characters in the low-context culture, because the contents contained in Chinese characters are richer, more changeable, and more possible. In various design fields, works with Chinese characters as the core design elements are common. These works show the beauty of Chinese characters through different aspects such as the form, structure, semantics, and media of Chinese characters, among which the semantic features of Chinese characters are especially rich. Then, what are the aesthetic characteristics of Chinese characters in the context of high-context cultural linguistics? In addition, the purpose of this study is to observe how these characteristics are applied to design works. Through collecting and sorting out relevant literature, this paper will analyze and study the above problems. Firstly, the concept and characteristics of contextual culture are summarized, and the philosophical and social factors that form high-context culture are observed from the dimension of high-context culture. Secondly, it generalizes the aesthetic characteristics of Chinese characters from the perspective of high-context culture. By sorting out the relevant literature views of “high-context and Chinese character semantics”, it is concluded that the beauty of Chinese character semantics in high-context culture is mainly reflected in its artistic conception. Besides, it also gets three core elements from the literature. Finally, the visual design works with the meaning of Chinese characters as the theme are selected to observe the application of semantic aesthetic characteristics of Chinese characters in the design. Thus, it provides some reference for the application of Chinese character semantical aesthetics in design.

        Characterization of exopolysaccharide-producing lactic acid bacteria from Taiwanese ropy fermented milk and their application in low-fat fermented milk

        Objective: The aim of this study was to characterize the exopolysaccharides (EPS)-producing lactic acid bacteria from Taiwanese ropy fermented milk (TRFM) for developing a clean label low-fat fermented milk. Methods: Potential isolates from TRFM were selected based on the Gram staining test and observation of turbid suspension in the culture broth. Random amplified polymorphic DNA-polymerase chain reaction, 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and API CHL 50 test were used for strain identification. After evaluation of EPS concentration, target strains were introduced to low-fat milk fermentation for 24 h. Fermentation characters were checked: pH value, acidity, viable count, syneresis, and viscosity. Sensory evaluation of fermented products was carried out by 30 volunteers, while the storage test was performed for 21 days at 4°C. Results: Two EPS-producing strains (APL15 and APL16) were isolated from TRFM and identified as Lactococcus (Lc.) lactis subsp. cremoris. Their EPS concentrations in glucose and lactose media were higher than other published strains of Lc. lactis subsp. cremoris. Low-fat fermented milk separately prepared with APL15 and APL16 reached pH 4.3 and acidity 0.8% with a viable count of 9 log colony-forming units/mL. The physical properties of both products were superior to the control yogurt, showing significant improvements in syneresis and viscosity (p<0.05). Our low-fat products had appropriate sensory scores in appearance and texture according to sensory evaluation. Although decreasing viable cells of strains during the 21-day storage test, low-fat fermented milk made by APL15 exhibited stable physicochemical properties, including pH value, acidity, syneresis and sufficient viable cells throughout the storage period. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that Lc. lactis subsp. cremoris APL15 isolated from TRFM had good fermentation abilities to produce low-fat fermented milk. These data indicate that EPS-producing lactic acid bacteria have great potential to act as natural food stabilizers for low-fat fermented milk.         Upregulating sirtuin 6 ameliorates glycolysis, EMT and distant metastasis of pancreatic adenocarcinoma with krüppel-like factor 10 deficiency

        Krüppel-like factor 10 (KLF10) is a tumor suppressor in multiple cancers. In a murine model of spontaneous pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PDAC), additional KLF10 depletion accelerated distant metastasis. However, Klf10 knockout mice, which suffer from metabolic disorders, do not develop malignancy. The mechanisms of KLF10 in PDAC progression deserve further exploration. KLF10-depleted and KLF10-overexpressing PDAC cells were established to measure epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), glycolysis, and migration ability. A murine model was established to evaluate the benefit of genetic or pharmacological manipulation in KLF10-depleted PDAC cells (PDACshKLF10). Correlations of KLF10 deficiency with rapid metastasis, elevated EMT, and glycolysis were demonstrated in resected PDAC tissues, in vitro assays, and murine models. We identified sirtuin 6 (SIRT6) as an essential mediator of KLF10 that modulates EMT and glucose homeostasis. Overexpressing SIRT6 reversed the migratory and glycolytic phenotypes of PDACshKLF10 cells. Linoleic acid, a polyunsaturated essential fatty acid, upregulated SIRT6 and prolonged the survival of mice injected with PDACshKLF10. Modulating HIF1α and NFκB revealed that EMT and glycolysis in PDAC cells were coordinately regulated upstream by KLF10/SIRT6 signaling. Our study demonstrated a novel KLF10/SIRT6 pathway that modulated EMT and glycolysis coordinately via NFκB and HIF1α. Activation of KLF10/SIRT6 signaling ameliorated the distant progression of PDAC.         Acupuncture for ventilator-dependent patients at a hospital-based respiratory care center: A randomized controlled trial

        Background: In intensive care units, mechanical ventilation is an important therapy to help patients with dysp- nea. However, long-term ventilator dependence would consume huge medical resources and increase the risk of morbidity and mortality. The aim of the study was to examine the efficacy of the acupuncture combined with western medical care on ventilator parameters in ventilator-dependent patients. Methods: In this clinical trial, 80 ventilator-dependent patients aged 20 to 80 years old were randomly assigned to acupuncture group and control group in the respiratory care center (RCC) of Changhua Christian Hospital. Besides regular medical care and therapy, participants in the acupuncture group received acupuncture therapy at the same 17 acu-points for 20 minutes once a day, a total of 12 sessions. The ventilator parameters were recorded to evaluate the respiratory efficiency for all participants. The primary outcome was rapid shallow breathing index (RSBI), and secondary outcomes were respiratory rate (RR), tidal volume (TV) and ventilation per minute (MV). Results: Though there was no significant difference in the parameter between the acupuncture group and the control group, we found the trend of decreasing RSBI in the acupuncture group. In subgroup analyses, the mean of RSBI significantly decreased 16.02 (with the SD in 60.84) in acupuncture group, while it increased 17.84 (with the SD in 39.38) in control group (p = 0.036) after 12 sessions. Conclusion: Acupuncture treatment can improve breathing ability of patients with respirator dependence in respiratory care center.
