<P> This paper presents the novel implementation of the memetic algorithm with GA(Genetic Algorithm) and MADS(Mesh Adaptive Direct Search), which is applied for the optimal design methodology of the electric machine. This hybrid algorithm has been developed for obtaining the global optimum rapidly, which is effective for the optimal design of a electric machine with many local optima and much longer computation time. As a meta-heuristic search algorithm, MADS combined with a GA is validated with the Rastrigin function and the Shubert function with distinguished multimodal characteristics by investigating the evaluation number for optima convergence. In particular, the proposed algorithm has been forwarded to the optimal design of a direct-driven PM wind generator for maximizing the Annual Energy Production(AEP), of which design objective should be obtained by FEA(Finite Element Analysis). Finally, it is shown that MADS combined with GA has contributed to reducing the computation time effectively for the optimal design of a PM wind generator when compared with the purposely developed GA implemented with the parallel computing method. </P>

Introduction: Bronchial artery aneurysm (BAA) is very rare at mediastinum, but when it ruptures, it can cause a fatal event with massive bleeding. We report a case of percutaneous embolization for giant bronchial artery aneurysm. Case: A 73-year-old man with a history of pulmonary tuberculosis was admitted for enlarged mediastinal mass on chest X-ray (Fig A). He was already diagnosed BAA 6 years ago and the maximum diameter of BAA was 45mm at that time. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed saccular type BAA (60mm in diameter) from proximal site of bronchial artery which is originated from descending thoracic aorta and feed the left lower lobe of lung (Fig B, C). The BAA seems like to compress the trachea and esophagus but he had no respiratory symptom and swallowing difficulty. Although there was no symptoms related to BAA, percutaneous embolization was planned for reducing the risk of rupture.6-Fr Judkin left 4.0 guiding catheter using Rt. Femoral approach was engaged at the ostium of left BAA (Fig D). To occlude the distal feeding vessel, three interlock-coils 6mm/20mm, 6mm/20mm, and 3 mm/12 mm were deployed at distal bronchial a. (Fig E). To occlude the proximal feeding vessel, AMPLATZER® vascular plug II was deployed at the ostium of bronchial artery aneurysm (Fig E). At 1-year of follow-up, patient was stable and CT scan showed no enhancement and no enlargement of BAA (Fig F). Conclusions: The huge mediastinal bronchial artery aneurysm was easily and safely treated by endovascular approach with coil and Amplatzer vascular plug

Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we studied the electronic structure of graphene grown on a Ge (110) wafer, where a single-crystal single-layer graphene was recently grown using chemical vapor deposition. The growth mechanism of the single-layer single-crystal graphene was related to the hydrogen termination of the Ge (110) surface. To further understand the growth mechanism, we measured the electronic structure of the graphene-covered Ge (110) wafer in a vacuum as a function of the increasing temperature, which led to a deintercalation of the hydrogen atoms. Furthermore, we measured the electronic structure after the reintercalation of the hydrogen atoms between the Ge substrate and graphene. These findings show that hydrogen is intercalated between the Ge substrate and graphene after the growth of graphene using chemical vapor deposition.

Purpose: To investigate the patterns of care for patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in South Korea. Materials and Methods: A multi-institutional retrospective study was performed (Korean Radiation Oncology Group [KROG] 11-06) on a total of 1,445 patients from 15 institutions. Results: Of the 1,445 patients, more than half were stages III (39.9%) and IV (35.8%). In addition to patterns of care, we also investigated trends over time with the periods 1988-1993, 1994-2002, and 2003-2011. The frequencies of magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography-computed tomography were markedly increased in the third period compared to previous 2 periods. Concurrent chemoradiation (CCRT) was performed on 894 patients (61.9%), neoadjuvant chemotherapy on 468 patients (32.4%), and adjuvant chemotherapy on 366 patients (25.3%). Of stage II-IV patients, CCRT performed on 78.8% in 2003-2011 compared to 15.0% in 1988-1993. For patients treated with CCRT, cisplatin was the most commonly used agent in 81.3% of patients. Over the periods of time, commonly used radiotherapy (RT) techniques were changed from 2-dimensional RT (1988-1993, 92.5%) to 3-dimensional RT (2003-2011, 35.5%) or intensity-modulated RT (IMRT; 2003-2011, 56.5%). Median RT doses given to primary tumors, high-risk lymphatics, and low-risk lymphatics were 70.0 Gy, 58.1 Gy, and 48.0 Gy, respectively. Adoption of IMRT increased the dose per fraction and escalated total radiation dose. Conclusion: Assessment of the patterns of care for NPC patients in South Korea demonstrated that management for NPC including diagnostic imaging, treatment regimen, RT techniques and dose schedule, advanced in accordance with the international guidelines.

Polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) membranes, based on two anionic polysaccharides, composed of sodium alginate (SA) and carrageenan (CG), were prepared by interaction with divalent calcium ions. By using FT-IR, XRD, and DSC, their structural characteristics were analyzed, suggesting a morphological deformation with a chelate formation between them. As a result, it can be considered that the chelation of calcium ions would interfere in the intermolecular hydrogen bonding interaction between SA and CG. Moreover, to investigate the permeation properties related to their structural characteristics, pervaporation separation for an 85/15 wt% ethanol/water mixture was carried out. These membranes showed approximately the following pervaporation performance: permeation flux of 94–253 g/㎡ h and ethanol concentration in the permeate of 0.26–0.52 wt% at 40 ℃.
