Spontaneous coronary artery dissection is a rare cause of myocardial infarction. It occurs in relatively young people with a striking predilection for women, mainly during or after prognancy. The optimal management of spontaneous coronary artery dissection has not been established yet and may vary, depending upon the presence of intimal versus extramural compromise. Coronary artery bypass, stenting, and thrombolysis may have been successful and also may have failed, owing to extension of dissection. We describe a case of acute myocardial infarction caused by spontaneous coronary artery dissection which occurs in a 51-year old man. The coronary angiography showed a spiral dissection of right coronary artery, from the origin of conus branch to the distal portion of right coronary artery. An intimal plaque with 35% obstruction and normal (TIMI 3) flow was demonstrated. The patient was functionally recovered after conventional midical treatment including heparin, beta blockers and long acting nitrates. Four months later, follow up coronary angiography showed stabilization of coronary lesion and improvement of stenosis.

Nitric oxide (NO) is synthesized from L-arginine by nitric oxide synthase (NOS). Alternation of NOS expression is implicated in the pathogenesis of numerous secondary complications of diabetes. Aqueous extract of Ginseng radix has traditionally been used for the various disorders including diabetes. In this study, the effect of Ginseng radix an the NOS expression in the hippocampus of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats was investigated via nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase (NADPH-d) histochemistry. Enhanced NOS expression was detected in the hippocampus of diabetic rats and administration of Ginseng radix suppressed NOS expression. Ginseng radix may aid the treatment of central nervous system complications in diabetes.

This report provides a detailed description of the methodology for ophthalmic examinations according to the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) VII and VIII (from 2017 to 2021). The KNHANES is a nationwide survey which has been performed since 1998 in representatives of whole Korean population. During the KNHANES VII and VIII, in addition to the ophthalmic questionnaire, intraocular pressure measurement, visual field test, auto refractometry, axial length and optical coherence tomography measurements were included. This new survey will provide not only provide normative and pathologic ophthalmic data including intraocular pressure, refractive error, axial length, visual field and precise measurement of anterior segment, macula and optic nerve with optical coherence tomography, but also a more accurate diagnosis for major adult blindness diseases, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and other ocular diseases, for the national Korean population.

Understanding of bacteriophage kinetics in mammals or higher organisms is needed, as this determines the potential phage activity in antibacterial treatment. We demonstrated the fate and survivability of fish phage particles in different organs and fluids inoculated into mice. Phage (PPpW-4) specific to Pseudomonas plecoglossicida was intraperitoneally injected to mice with a dose of 108.1 PFU/㎖/mouse. Phage titers (103.0~105.2 PFU/g) were detected in blood and other organs within 10 min after injection except in the urine samples. Phage titers in blood (105.1~106.9 PFU/g) were 10~100 times higher than that of the other organs from 10 min until 24 h. It shows that phage was distributed quickly to the different organs by circulatory system via the blood. Phage titers in all organs showed the highest level in 1 h (104.2~106.9 PFU/g) and reduced rapidly until no phage was detected in 72 h. Although phage disappeared in blood within 72 h, phage can still survived in the spleen and kidney until 96 h. Spleen in particular, had an appreciable phage titer of 102.7 PFU/g. There were comparatively high phage titers (103.0~104.7 PFU/g) in urine from 1 h up to 24 h. It means that one possible mechanism of phage elimination is by urinary excretion.

The possibility has been raised that Folium mort is clinically effective for the treatment and prevention of diabetes In the present study, the effects of Folium mori on cell proliferation and expression of neuropeptide Y(NPY) in the dentate gyrus of rats with streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes were investigated by 5-bromo-2'deoxyuridine (BrdU) immunohistochemistry and NPY immunohistochemistry. In rats with STZ-induced diabetes, cell proliferation and NPY expression in the dentate gyrus were suppressed, and treatment with Folium mori was shown to increase new cell formation and NPY expression in the gyrus in both normal rats and those with STZ-induced diabetes. In light of previous studies, this result appears to indicate that increased expression of NPY in the dentate gyrus induced by treatment with Folium mori is associated with the observed effect of Folium mori extract on cell proliferation. Based on the present results, it is suggested that Folium mori treatment may aid in the recovery from the central nervous system complications of diabetes mellitus.
