A mixture of crude drugs was administered to cultured flounders and evaluated by its efficacy for further usage in the fish culture in general. A newly adopted WTO system requires our fish industry to have the competitiveness in terms of the fish quality and price. The use of conventional crude drugs in culture farming could give some solution in this regard. The formula of the mixture of crude drugs per ㎏ was as follows: ginseng, 10g; garlic extract, 1g; aloe powder, 10g; kelp powder, 50g; and excipients. Among these ingredients, ginseng has already been enjoyed in the area of flounders culture due to its promotant effects not only for growth but also for muscle quality. As garlic has the appetizing effects for the fish, it has long been used as an additive in fish feed. Other ingredients such as aloe and kelp have sound background as fish feed additives. paragraph, we investigated the efficacy of the mixture by two viewpoints; growth promotion(quantity aspect) and muscle hardness(quality aspect). From the quantity point of view, the mixture had remarkable growth promoting effects in both fry and adult fish; the mixture(101.8%) vs. the control(80.5%) for the fry; the mixture(67.2%) vs. the control(55.7%) for the adult. In addition, te mixture gave more desirable effects over the control, from the standpoints of the feed efficiency, body length and accumulated death rates. From the quality point of view, the mixture appeared to lead to the promotion of muscle quality both objectively and subjectively. By the use of a muscle hardness measuring apparatus, the mixture gave more muscle hardness at least for 10 hours from storage, as compared to the control. Adults participating in the test for tasting, expressed that the muscle from the mixture-treated group was harder therefore taster than that from the control group. In conclusion, the mixture used in this study could be used successfully in the culture farming so as to get the competitiveness edge as it was confirmed to have the effects of promoting growth and increasing the muscle quality.

A comparison was made of the in vitro activities of earlier quinolone antibacterials and some antibiotics used in aquaculture in Korea and newer quinolones, aganist selected flesh bacterial pathogens. Most quinolones were shown high sensitivity against all Gram- negative strains. Some Gram- negative strains, however, showed a resistance to the earlier quinolones and antibiotics. Bacteriostatic and bactricidal effects of the newer quinolones on Gram- negative strains were higher than those of the earlier quinolones. Among the newer quinolones, norfloxacin and pefloxacin showed a great reduction of the number and rate of mortality, and confirmed that their therapeutic effects were very excellent. Norfloxacin and pefloxacin were also recognized to be a wide spectrum of antibacterial quinolones, and their application was expected to be effective for the treatment of many fish bacteriaal diaseases, difficult to treat with existing antibiotics. The newer quinolones were considerd to have the potential for the treatment of Gram- negative, and possibly Gram- positive, bacterial fish pathogens.

Fosfomycin, a low molecular antibiotic, is to be easily synthesized, therefore to be possibly used in veterinary sectors due to econimic reasons. In this study, we determined the antibacterial activities of fosfomycin against some domestic animal-origin pathogens, and its combined effects with some important antibacterials available. We also compared detection methods of fosfomycin from various measuring instruments. The results obtained through this experiment were as follows: 1. Antibacterial activities of fosfomycin against the pathogens used in this experiment were appeared fairly low. We found the antobacterial activities depanded on the kinds of media and the addition of some material thereins, which suggests the importance of appropriate medium so as to judge the antibacterial activity of fosfomycin. 2. Fosfomycin showed varying antibacterial effects in combination with other antibacterials, which should be taken into consideration when combining other antobacterials especially in the clinical settings. Of the combined antivacterials, fosfomycin had synergistic effects in combination with amoxicillin but antagonistic effects with oxytetracyline. 3. Conventional detection methods using HPLC, GC and spectrophotometer were not appropriate to measure fosfomycin. Capillary electrophoresis by the way of the indirect ultraviolet detection method was good enough to detect fosfomycin in the range of expected concentration in tissues, with the limit of quantitation (LOQ) of 1.25 ㎍/㎖. We recommend the eletrophoresis method could be used to detect fosfomycin, thereby being able to set the optimal dosage for animals and providing the measures in relation with the residual concentration in the meat.
Effect of L-theanine on non-specific immunoparameters in catfish (Silurus asortus)
Heo, Gang-Joon,Shin, Gee-Wook The Korean Society of Veterinary Service 2012 韓國家畜衛生學會誌 Vol.35 No.4
L-theanine was examined for its effects on the generation of superoxide anion, lysozyme and anti-protease in the plasma of catfish (Silurus asotus) by a single intraperitoneal injection with five different concentrations (0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 mg/kg). When compared with the mock-injected group (0 mg/kg), both groups injected with 6 and 9 mg/kg were significantly enhanced in levels of superoxide anion in leukocytes, lysozyme and anti-protease in plasma. Based on the results, L-theanine is thought to function as an immunostimulant and/or immunomodulator on non-specific immune responses in catfish.

Acute and subacute toxicity of trichlorfon in guppies (Poecilia reticulata)
Heo, Gang-Joon,Shin, Gee-Wook The Korean Society of Veterinary Science 2009 大韓獸醫學會誌 Vol.49 No.3
The aim of the present study was to determine the acute and subacute potential of trichlorfon in guppies (Poecilia reticulatus). We first defined the 24 h median tolerance limit ($TLm_{24h}$) of the fish to trichlorfon. Guppies were then treated with $TLm_{24h}$ and 1/10 $TLm_{24h}$ trichlorfon concentrations to evaluate if any histological alterations occurred. The $TLm_{24h}$ value of trichlorfon was 11 ppm. This concentration resulted in acute toxicity to the gills and kidneys with edema, hyperplasia of the gill lamellae, and vacuolated degeneration and necrosis of renal tubular cells. In the case of subacute toxicity using a 10-fold dilution of the $TLm_{24h}$ value (1.1 ppm), no behavioral changes, external lesions or histopathological changes were observed. Therefore, safe concentration of trichlorfon might be 1.1 ppm in guppy for controlling parasitic infections.

Garlic (Allium sativum) is known to have antimicrobial effects but there are few data on its effects against fish pathogenic bacteria. This study was conducted for possible development of natural food antimicrobials from garlic extracts, particularly allicin. The filter sterilized, aqueous extract of garlic was tested for its ability to inhibit the growth of 7 fish pathogenic bacteria (E. tarda, V. ichthyoenteri, V. harveyi, P. damselae, S. iniae, S. parauberis, L. garviae) using the disc diffusion test, minimum inhibitory concentration test, and minimum bacteriocidal concentration test. The garlic extract inhibited growth and killed most of the organisms tested. The disc diffusion test was performed using garlic extracts (100%, 50%, 25%, 10%, each 20㎍), and MIC test was also performed using a diluted concentration of garlic extracts (488 - 250,000 ㎍/㎖). According to the results, garlic extracts exhibited antimicrobial activity against all of seven bacteria, and these results suggest that this garlic extract can be used as an antimicrobial substance against fish bacterial diseases in the fish industry.
