<P>Although different kinds of metal oxide nanoparticles continue to be proposed as anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs), their cycle life and power density are still not suitable for commercial applications. Metal oxide nanoparticles have a large storage capacity, but they suffer from the excessive generation of solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the surface, low electrical conductivity, and mechanical degradation and pulverization resulted from severe volume expansion during cycling. Herein we present the preparation of mesoporous iron oxide nanoparticle clusters (MIONCs) by a bottom-up self-assembly approach and demonstrate that they exhibit excellent cyclic stability and rate capability derived from their three-dimensional mesoporous nanostructure. By controlling the geometric configuration, we can achieve stable interfaces between the electrolyte and active materials, resulting in SEI formation confined on the outer surface of the MIONCs.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/nalefd/2013/nalefd.2013.13.issue-9/nl401952h/production/images/medium/nl-2013-01952h_0007.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/nl401952h'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

Etching Characteristics of Carbon Nanotube Thin Films in O2/Ar Plasma
Lee, Jaemin,Efremov, Alexander,Lee, Junmyung,Kim, Kwangsoo,Kwon, Kwang-Ho American Scientific Publishers 2016 Journal of nanoscience and nanotechnology Vol.16 No.11
<P>In this work, we studied the influence of O-2/Ar mixing ratio on the etching characteristics of carbon nanotube (CNT) thin films in inductively coupled plasma at constant gas pressure (6 mTorr), input power (400 W), bias power (50 W), and total gas flow rate (40 sccm). The etching mechanism was analyzed based on both plasma diagnostics (optical emission spectroscopy, Langmuir probe) and plasma modeling. It was found that increasing the Ar mixing ratio in the range of 0-75% Ar lowered the O atom density but increased the CNT film etching rate (44.3-88.4 nm/min). It is proposed that the CNT film etching process is mainly driven by the chemical etching pathway, whereas an increase in the etching rate may be associated with increasing reaction probability.</P>

<P>Multimodal imaging is highly desirable for accurate diagnosis because it can provide complementary information from each imaging modality. In this study, a sol–gel reaction of tantalum(V) ethoxide in a microemulsion containing Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) was used to synthesize multifunctional Fe3O4/TaO<I>x</I> core/shell NPs, which were biocompatible and exhibited a prolonged circulation time. When the NPs were intravenously injected, the tumor-associated vessel was observed using computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed the high and low vascular regions of the tumor.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jacsat/2012/jacsat.2012.134.issue-25/ja3016582/production/images/medium/ja-2012-016582_0006.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/ja3016582'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
Biomineralized N-Doped CNT/TiO2 Core/Shell Nanowires for Visible Light Photocatalysis
Lee, Won Jun,Lee, Ju Min,Kochuveedu, Saji Thomas,Han, Tae Hee,Jeong, Hu Young,Park, Moonkyu,Yun, Je Moon,Kwon, Joon,No, Kwangsoo,Kim, Dong Ha,Kim, Sang Ouk American Chemical Society 2012 ACS NANO Vol.6 No.1
<P>We report an efficient and environmentally benign biomimetic mineralization of TiO2 at the graphitic carbon surface, which successfully created an ideal TiO2/carbon hybrid structure without any harsh surface treatment or interfacial adhesive layer. The N-doped sites at carbon nanotubes (CNTs) successfully nucleated the high-yield biomimetic deposition of a uniformly thick TiO2 nanoshell in neutral pH aqueous media at ambient pressure and temperature and generated N-doped CNT (NCNT)/TiO2 core/shell nanowires. Unlike previously known organic biomineralization templates, such as proteins or peptides, the electroconductive and high-temperature-stable NCNT backbone enabled high-temperature thermal treatment and corresponding crystal structure transformation of TiO2 nanoshells into the anatase or rutile phase for optimized material properties. The direct contact of the NCNT surface and TiO2 nanoshell without any adhesive interlayer introduced a new carbon energy level in the TiO2 band gap and thereby effectively lowered the band gap energy. Consequently, the created core/shell nanowires showed a greatly enhanced visible light photocatalysis. Other interesting synergistic properties such as stimuli-responsive wettabilites were also demonstrated.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/ancac3/2012/ancac3.2012.6.issue-1/nn204504h/production/images/medium/nn-2011-04504h_0007.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/nn204504h'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

Renal vein thrombosis (RVT) is not an uncommon condition amongst patients with nephrotic syndrome or malignancy. Septic pulmonary embolism (SPE) is associated with risk factors such as intravenous drug use, pelvic thrombophlebitis, and suppurative processes in the head and neck. However, acute pyelonephritis is a rare cause of RVT and SPE. Case reports on RVT and SPE due to acute pyelonephritis are rare. In most of the earlier cases, patients had underlying conditions such as diabetes mellitus, renal carcinoma, calyceal stones, and hyperhomocysteinemia. We report a case of acute pyelonephritis complicated by RVT and SPE that occurred in a patient without any predisposing risk factors for thromboembolism. RVT and SPE were diagnosed using computed tomography and ventilation/perfusion scan. The patient recovered with antibiotics and anticoagulation therapy without any surgical interventions.

Thin films of high dielectric constant materials, specifically titanium dioxide, were investigated as potential replacements for silicon dioxide, which is generally used as a blocking layer for nonvolatile memory devices. A silicon-oxynitride layer using nitrous-oxide plasma as a tunneling layer and using titanium-dioxide as a blocking layer was deposited to fabricate nonvolatile memory on rough poly-silicon. Titanium dioxide thin films were deposited using atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition and spectroscopic ellipsometry and scanning electron microscopy were used to measure the physical properties. A metal-insulator-semiconductor device was fabricated to measure the current density-electric field and a nonvolatile memory device on glass was fabricated to measure the gate voltage - drain current, drain voltage - drain current and retention characteristics. The leakage current density of the sample deposited at 250℃ was the lowest (1.4 x 10-9A/mm² at 2 MV/cm). The threshold voltage shift of the nonvolatile memory device on glass was 1.6 V and the subthreshold swing (~270 mV/decade based on the maximum slope in the transfer curve) and the on/off current ratio (~10 6) remained nearly constant during the programming/erasing operations.
