        Dual-Level Biomemory Device Composed of Cytochrome c/DNA/Myoglobin Heterolayer

        <P>In this study, heterolayer composed of cytochrome c/DNA/myoglobin is fabricated for the demonstration of dual-level biomemory device. Metalloprotein and single stranded DNA are conjugated via chemical linkage, and then two different kinds of conjugates are connected by DNA hybridization which can provide stable and selective combination to form heterolayer on gold substrate. To verify the conjugation of metalloprotein and single stranded DNA, sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy are used. Morphological change by the heterolayer formation is investigated by atomic force microscopy. Cyclic voltammetry is used to investigate the electrochemical property of heterolayer. Dual-level memory functions are achieved by multi-potential step chronoamperometry. From results, heterolayer is well fabricated by DNA hybridization, and dual-level memory functions are well demonstrated with improved memory density. The proposed dual-level biomemory device can provide new approaching method to fabricate bioelectronic devices with high selectivity and functionality.</P>

        고품질 농업인 업무상 질병 및 손상조사 수행을 위한 연구

        While Korean agricultural statistics are mainly focused on economic indicators such as population, income, yields, etc., it is lack of indicators relating to welfare of farmers. Specially, the statistics related agricultural occupational disease and injuries were not produced until now. The goal of this study is to devise a strategy to guarantee the quality of the survey statistics to perform for Korean agricultural occupational disease and injury statistics. The survey used a stratified multistage cluster sampling design and adopted the face-to-face interview method. We introduce some practical activities to assure the survey quality and show specific survey quality numbers, such as sample substitution rate, response rate, number of input errors, number of logical errors, etc.

      • 농업인의 농작업 관련 손상

        Introduction: This Study was conducted to obtain information regarding the farm work accidents in Korea. This survey will provide a statistics of farm work accidents biennially. Method: This household survey sample followed a multistage, stratified. All interviews were conducted face to face in the respondent's own household. Almost 5,000 household, 9,630 farm workers were interviewed, answering about their working condition and experience of farm work accident from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2008. Results: Males(8.6%) suffered more injuries than females(2.9%) and the higher age was, the more injuries were reported. The incidence of farm work accident is most prevalent in from May to August(62.8%). Farm work accident showed a peak around 9-11am with further peak around 2-4pm. Major farm work accident place is paddy and field(65.7%), followed by farm road(10.2%). Slip on same level(27.1%) and weight lifting/transport(24.5%) is most common type of farm work accident, followed by fire/explosion(8.9%), struck against something fixed or stationary(6.9%), fall from a height(6.9%). Kinds of treatment in the farm accidents were self-treatment with 8.0%, medication with 13.5%, outpatient treatment with 45.9% and hospital treatment with 32.6%. Moreover 65.8% of all accidents were temporarily restricted in their work activity for at least four days.

      • Emodin Sensitizes Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells to the Anti-Cancer Effect of Sorafenib through Suppression of Cholesterol Metabolism

        <P>Reduced therapeutic efficacy of sorafenib, a first-generation multikinase inhibitor, is often observed during the treatment of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Emodin is an active component of Chinese herbs, and is effective against leukemia, lung cancer, colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, and HCC; however, the sensitizing effect of emodin on sorafenib-based HCC therapy has not been evaluated. Here, we demonstrate that emodin significantly improved the anti-cancer effect of sorafenib in HCC cells, such as HepG2, Hep3B, Huh7, SK-HEP-1, and PLC/PRF5. Mechanistically, emodin inhibits sterol regulatory element-binding protein-2 (SREBP-2) transcriptional activity, which suppresses cholesterol biosynthesis and oncogenic protein kinase B (AKT) signaling. Additionally, attenuated cholesterol synthesis and oncogenic AKT signaling inactivated signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), an oncogenic transcription factor. Furthermore, emodin synergistically increased cell cycle arrest in the G1 phase and apoptotic cells in the presence of sorafenib. Animal models xenografted with HepG2 or SK-HEP-1 cells also showed that the combination of emodin and sorafenib was sufficient to inhibit tumor growth. Overall, these results suggested that the combination of emodin and sorafenib may offer a potential therapy for patients with advanced HCC.</P>

      • 농업인의 근골격계 위험요인 노출 수준

        Introduction: This Study was conducted to obtain information regarding exposure levels of risk factors related to musculoskeletal systems by demographic and agriculture characteristics of farmers. Method: This household survey sample followed a multistage, stratified. All interviews were conducted face to face in the respondent's own household. Almost 6,006 household, 10,474 farm workers were interviewed. Results: Exposure of risk factors by posture and motion have the most work load in the waist(67%), hand/wrist(67%) and exposure of risk factors by lifting tasks showed 14% of serious risk and 26% of moderate risk. Exposure of risk factors by gender and age didn't show distinct differences and exposure of lifting tasks decrease with advancing age. Paddy, field, greenhouse, livestock have the most work load in the waist and wrist, followed by neck, knee but orchard have the most work load in the shoulder, neck and wrist.

        폴리프로필렌 공정의 첨가제와 직업성 피부영향

        목적: 정유공장의 폴리프로필렌(polypropylene) 부서와 복합수지 부서에서 사용되는 첨가제들중 피부첩포검사를 통하여 피부독성을 야기할 수 있는 물질들을 알아보기 위해서 본 조사를 수행하였다. 방법: 일개 정유공장에서 총 44명의 근로자를 대상으로 폴리프로필렌공정에서 첨가제를 취급한 노출군과 그런 작업을 하지 않은 비노출군으로 나누어 피부첩포검사를 했다. 노출군은 27명으로 과거 노출자 10명, 현노출자 17명이었다. 비노출군은 17명이었다. 10개의 첨가물 중 Microstat 16은 0.25%, Amoslip-CP는 0.1%의 농도로 첩포검사를 하고, 나머지 8종은 1%의 농도에서 검사 후 48시간 후 피부에 양성반응을 보이면 0.1%로다시 피부첩포검사를 했으며 음성방응을 보이면 10%로 검사를 시행했다. 결과: 각 물질별 결과로는 Ultranox-626과 Millad 3988이 가장 많은 피부양성반응을 보였다. 피부의 발진을 많이 보이는 (양성 및 의양성) 빈도는 Ultranox-626, Millad 3988, Armoslip-E, Songstab Sc-100 순이었다. 피부에 발진을 보이는 (양성 및 의양성) 대상자는 18명(41%)이었고, 그중 노출군이 14명(51.9%)이고 비노출군이 4명(23.5%)으로누출군에서 더 많은 발진을 야기하였다. 피부첩포검사에서 반응을 보이는 18명 중 자극가증서응로 작용하는 대상자는 7명(38.9%)이었고, 알레으기 가능성으로 작용하는 대상자는 6명(33.3%)이었으며 여러 물질에 강한 반응을 보이는 다중 반응 대상자는 5명(27.8%)이었다. 알레르기 가능성 반응 대상자는 현재의 노출자가 과거노출자와 비노출자 보다 통계적으로 유의하게 많았다(p=0.04). 자극가능성 반응 대상자들 중 현재 노출자, 과거노출자, 비노출자 사이의 통계적 차이는 없었다. 다중 반응 대상자는 과거노출자가 통계적으로 유의하게 많았고(p=0.05), 현재의 노출자는 없었다. 결론: 자극성 반응과 알레르기성 반응을 포함하여 첨가제에 노출된 집단이 비노출군보다 높은 과민상태를 보였다. 결과적으로 이들 물질에 노출되는 경우 잠재적 알레으기 가능성 반응이 유발 될 수 있능 것으로 보인다. 피부첩포검사에서 반응을 보이는 원인물질로 빈도가 높은 Ultranox-626 Millad 3988 Armoslip-E Songstab Sc-100의 4가지 물질에 대한 노출을 우선적으로 관리하는 것이 필요하다고 판단된다. 첨가물의 알레으기 여부를 정확히 판정하는 작업과 피부병 유발 가능성을 향후 좀더 구명할 필요가 있을 것으로 보인다. Objects: To investigate the causative agents for the dermatological problems associated with the polypropylene manufacturing process. Methods: The study subjects consisted of 44 male workers involved in the polypropylene manufacturing process. Twenty-seven of them had been exposed to additives, and the remaining 17 had not. Among the 27 exposed, 10 had been exposed previously, and 17 are currently being exposed through their duties. Patch test were performed with three different concentrations, 0.1%, 1% and 10% of 10 different additives that was diluted with Vaseline. Results: 18 subjects (41%) had positive reactions to the patch tests. Exposed group had a higher reaction rate (51.9%) than the control group (23.5%). When the positive reactions were further classified, 7, 6 and 5 were compatible with probablu irritant, probably allergic, and multiple hypersensitivity reactions respectively. The most frequent reactions were from Ultranox-626 followed by Millad 3988, Armoslip-E and Songstab Sc-100. Conclusions: When considering the significantly higher probability of an allergic reaction rate among the currently exposed group compared to non- or previously-exposed groups, the nature of dermatological problems in a polypropylene plant is probably allergic. Ultranox-626, Millad3988, Armoslip-E and Songstab Sc-100 were the main causatives agents found in the process.

        송과체 부위 종양 11례에 대한 임상분석

        The authors analyzed 11 cases of pineal region tumor in young male patients who had been treated at the Capital Armed Forces General Hospital. So, the following results were obtained. 1) Due to the army distinctiveness, all cases were young male patients. 2) An unusual large proportion of pineal region tumor(26.2%) was noted. 3) Headache and vomiting were main presenting symptoms and the duration of symptoms was short. 4) The tumors were mainly presented as a round well-enhancing masses with calcification. Also, nearly all were associated with hydrocephalus. 5) MRI was very useful for the demonstration of tumor extent. 6) Based on the classification of pineal tumor, the tumors of germ cell origin were predominant (81.9%). 7) The extrapineal metastasis was frequent 8) The tumor maker(α-FP or HCG) was positive in 4cases (36.4%). 9) Germinoma showed excellent prognosis for the irradiation following a drainage procedure.
