        The incidence of aseptic meningitis infection is ensuing and threatening the health of children. Enteroviruses are the major agents of aseptic meningitis and identification of virus has been a clue to diagnosis and epidemiology. The outbreak of aseptic meningitis occurred in Pusan, 1998. Patients were concentrated from April through November. Children were more susceptible than adults. Among 306 cases of specimens from stool, throat swab tested, only 7.2% were positive on virus isolation, 12 cases from stool and 10 from throat, respectively. All isolated 7 serotypes of viruses represented cytopathic effect on cultured cells. Three types of echovirus 6, 25, 30 and coxsackievirus B2, B3, B4, B6 were identified by neutralizing anti body test. Isolated coxsackievirus and echovirus were observed by an electron microscope with negative staining.

        전경대원에서 발생한 결핵의 임상 양상

        Background: The purpose of this study was to document the incidence and clinical characteristics of patients with tuberculosis (TB) in combat and auxiliary police, living in a group, in Korea where the incidence rate of active TB in a general population is higher than in Western countries. Materials and Methods:We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of all tuberculosis patients diagnosed at National Police Hospital from January 2002 through December 2004. Results:In 2002-2004, a total of 156 cases of tuberculosis were identified with the mean (Standard deviation) age of 20.6 (±1.0) years. Of these, 134 (85.9%) patients were registered as new cases, 11 (7.1%) as relapse, 2 (1.3%) as failure, 5 (3.1%) as treatment-after-default cases whereas 4 (2.6 %) patients were not included in any categories. Average annual new TB rate and smear-positive TB rate were 86.5/10^(5) and 17.4/10^(5) person-years, respectively. In 12 of 31 smear-positive cases, time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis was more than 30 days. Two multidrug-resistance TB cases were identified and two suspected outbreak episodes of TB had occurred during 3 years. Conclusion:There was no statistically significant difference in the incidence rate of new cases of TB between the general population aged 20 to 29 years and combat and auxiliary police in Korea. 배경 : 국내 결핵의 발생은 감소 추세에 있으나 여전히 후진국형 발생양상을 보이고 있다. 특히 집단생활을 하는 젊은이들에서 발생하는 결핵의 유행이 간헐적으로 알려지고 있어 우려를 낳고 있다. 이에 저자들은 최근 전경대원의 결핵 발병 양상에 대해 알아보고자 본 연구를 시행하였다. 재료 및 방법 : 2002년 1월부터 2004년 12월까지 3년간 경찰병원에서 결핵 진료를 받은 전경대원의 의무기록을 후향적으로 분석하여 연도별 결핵 신환발생률, 도말양성결핵 신환율, 진단 지연, 집단발병, 다제내성결핵을 조사하였다. 결과 : 연도별 결핵 신환자 수(10만명당 발생추정치)는 2002년 50명(83.6명), 2003년 42명(83.7명), 2004년 42명(93.5명)이었고 도말양성 폐결핵 신환자 수는 2002년 10명(16.7명), 2003년 11명(21.9명), 2004년 6명(13.4명)이었다. 3년간 도말양성 폐결핵 환자는 31명이 있었고 그 중 12명은 호흡기 증상 발생 30일이 지나서 진단을 받았다. 다제내성 결핵은 2명이 있었으며 결핵의 집단발병이 의심되는 사례는 2차례 있었다. 결론 : 전경대원과 20-29세 연령군 일반인의 결핵 신환발생률, 도말양성 폐결핵 발생률의 통계적으로 유의한 차이는 없었다.

      • Medicinal Chemistry : EVALUATION OF CADMIUM-INDUCED NEPHROTOXICITY USING URINARY METABOLOMIC PROFILES IN SPRAGUE-DAWLEY MALE RATS

        The aim of this study was to investigate urinary metabolomics profiles associated with cadmium (Cd)-induced nephrotoxicity and their potential mechanisms. Metabolomic profiles were measured by high-resolution 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in the urine of rats after oral exposure to CdCl2 (1, 5, or 25 mg/kg) for 6 wk. The spectral data were further analyzed by a multivariate analysis to identify specific urinary metabolites. Urinary excretion levels of protein biomarkers were also measured and CdCl2 accumulated dose-dependently in the kidney. High-dose (25 mg/kg) CdCl2 exposure significantly increased serum blood urea nitrogen (BUN), but serum creatinine (sCr) levels were unchanged. High-dose CdCl2 (25 mg/kg) exposure also significantly elevated protein-based urinary biomarkers including osteopontin, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), kidney injury molecules-1 (Kim-1), and selenium-bingding protein 1 (SBP1) in rat urine. Under these conditions, six urinary metabolites (citarate, serine, 3-hydroxyisovalerate, 4-hydroxyphentllactate, dimethylamine, and betaine) were involved in mitochondrial energy metabolism. In addition, a few number of amino acids such as glycine, glutamate, tyrosine, proline, or phentlalanine and carbohydrate (glucose) were altered in urine afrer CdCl2 exposure. In particular, the metabolites involved in the glutathione biosynthesis pathway, including cysteine, serine, methionine, and glutamate, were markedly decreased compared to the control. Thus, these metabolites are potential biomarkers for detection of Cd-induced nephrotoxicity. Our results further indicate that redox metabolomics pathways may be associated with Cd-mediated chronic kidney injury. These findings provide a biochemical pathway for better understanding of cellulat mechanism underlying Cd-induced renal injury in hunmans.

      • 이온교환체로서 Polyphenylene Sulfide Sulfonic Acid에 관한 연구

        Sulfonated poly(phenylene sulfide)(S-PPS) was prepared by the reaction of poly(phenylene sulfide)(PPS) with fuming sulfuric acid. The sulfonation was confirmed by the high intensity band of the SO_3H group at 1190 cm^-1. Thermally crosslinked S-PPS was used for a cation exchange polymer with high thermal stability. The ion exchange capacity of soluble S-PPS(H-form) and insoluble S-PPS(H-form) was 5.16meq/g and 3.50meq/g, respectively. The ion exchange capacity and IR absorbance at 1190cm^-1 of S-PPS were decreased as the curing temperature was increased.

        As the micro technology and miniaturization of a structure and component in the last couple of decades have been concretely realized, the understanding of structural and dynamic characteristics and prediction of dynamic behavior are indispensable to the miniaturized structures and micro machines. This paper shows the effect of dynamic characteristics in bolt-jointed structures by comparing natural frequencies and mode shapes between macro and micro-scale beams through experimental modal analysis and finite element analysis with a1 8 test models by materials, by size, and by joining condition; that is, SS41 and A16061-T651, micro and macro, and monolithic beam and bolt-jointed beam.

        MBOD법에 의한 만경강 수계의 조류성장잠재력 평가

        The modified biochemical oxygen demand (MBOD) were conducted to evaluate the water quality and fertility in the Mangyeong river from november 2002 to april 2003. MBOD method was used to evaluate algal growth potentials and their limiting factors. MBOD depends on the amount of available inorganic nutrient and organic substrate during 5-day incubation in the dark condition at 20℃. The MBOD assay depends on inorganic nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen as well as reduced carbon as called MBOD, MBOD-P, and MBOD-N, respectively. The concentration of pollutants were in the range of 3.08~48.36 mg/L for COD. The concentration of nutrients were in the range of 0.37~111.62 mg/L for dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and 0.00~1.03 mg/L for dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP). The results of MBOD bioassay showed that the MBOD, MBOD-P and MBOD-N values were 15~173 mg O₂/L, 13~165 mg O₂/L and 66~175 mg O₂/L ranges, respectively. The MBOD values are found to be the highest in Iksan River and the lowest in Hari River throughout the Mangyeong River. The relationships of MBOD, MBOD-P and MBOD-N in MBOD method were generally found in MBOD MBOD-P≒MBOD-N. But the result of Gosan was appeared to MBOD≒MBOD-N>MBOD-P. The MBOD-N value was higher 3 to 5 times than the MBOD-P value in the Gosan station. The algal growth potentials expressed as the concentration of chlorophyll-a were maximum 20 times more than algal biomass in the water column.

        용사코팅용 나노 WC-12Co 피드스톡의 제조

        This study investigates the fabrication of WC-12Co feedstock powders with weakly locculated slurries by spray drying under various conditions. The morphological defects and flocculation states according to the amount of additives are evaluated to prepare spherical WC-Co feedstock powders with little morphological defects and homogeneous microstructures. The characteristics of feedstock powders, heat treated between 850-1200℃, are analyzed via SEM, EPMA, and mercury porosimetry. The results showed that with the increase in heat treatment temperature the portion of larger pores around 10 μm increased while, that of smaller pores of 1 μm lessened due to the coalescence of WC particles, forming dense feedstock powders with little defects such as hollow or craters. The feedstock heat treated at 1200℃ showed a porosity of 42.2% and a density of 8.28 g/cm^(3) as well as uniform distribution of pores and Co. (Received January 19, 2004)

      • p-Anisaldehyde가 조골세포 분화에 미치는 영향

        p-Anisaldehyde is a natural fragrance extracted from Pimpinella anisum L., and used as a preservative. This study examined the effect of p-anisaldehyde on osteoblast differentiation. First, cytotoxicity tests were carried out after examining the concentrations that did not show toxicity to the cells. The expression of osteoblast differentiation marker gene was confirmed by RT-PCR and was not effective in the treatment with p-anisaldehyde alone. However, p-anisaldehyde decreased the expression levels of inhibitor of differentiation-1 (Id1), distalless related homeobox (Dlx5), and runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2), which are osteogenic differentiation marker genes, which are increased in osteogenic condition. alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity was also confirmed by ALP staining that p-anisaldehyde reduced ALP activity. These results show that p-anisaldehyde is effective in reducing osteoblast differentiation.

        제지폐수의 응집특성에 관한 연구

        본 연구에서는 우유팩을 이용하여 재생용 화장지를 만드는 제지공장의 제지폐수를 이용하여 폐수의 침강특성 및 SS, BOD_5, 제거 효율을 검토하고, Jar-tester를 이용하여 급속교반시간, 완속교반 시간에 따른 탁도, SS, BOD_5 및 최적 응집제 주입량을 결정하였다. 각종 응집제 첨가 및 침강 특성에 의한 탁도제거의 효율을 측정하였다. 적정 응집제 첨가량, 급속교반 및 완속교반의 시간에 따른 처리 효율의 이론식을 제시하였다. 또한 응집제 Polyalunlinium chloride(PAC) 및 Aluminium sulfate의 응집 비교 실험을 행하였다. Sedimentation characteristics SS, BOD_5 and removal efficiency of waste water in the tissue paper mill using milk carton were examined. Optimum dosage of coagulant, rapid mixing time and slow mixing time were determined by turbidity. SS and S-BOD_5 and then equation for treatment efficiency was suggested. For the coagulant, polyalumimium chloride(PAC) are compared with a little better efficiency compare to the aluminium sulfate.
