The aim of this study was to investigate urinary metabolomics profiles associated with cadmium (Cd)-induced nephrotoxicity and their potential mechanisms. Metabolomic profiles were measured by high-resolution 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in the urine of rats after oral exposure to CdCl2 (1, 5, or 25 mg/kg) for 6 wk. The spectral data were further analyzed by a multivariate analysis to identify specific urinary metabolites. Urinary excretion levels of protein biomarkers were also measured and CdCl2 accumulated dose-dependently in the kidney. High-dose (25 mg/kg) CdCl2 exposure significantly increased serum blood urea nitrogen (BUN), but serum creatinine (sCr) levels were unchanged. High-dose CdCl2 (25 mg/kg) exposure also significantly elevated protein-based urinary biomarkers including osteopontin, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), kidney injury molecules-1 (Kim-1), and selenium-bingding protein 1 (SBP1) in rat urine. Under these conditions, six urinary metabolites (citarate, serine, 3-hydroxyisovalerate, 4-hydroxyphentllactate, dimethylamine, and betaine) were involved in mitochondrial energy metabolism. In addition, a few number of amino acids such as glycine, glutamate, tyrosine, proline, or phentlalanine and carbohydrate (glucose) were altered in urine afrer CdCl2 exposure. In particular, the metabolites involved in the glutathione biosynthesis pathway, including cysteine, serine, methionine, and glutamate, were markedly decreased compared to the control. Thus, these metabolites are potential biomarkers for detection of Cd-induced nephrotoxicity. Our results further indicate that redox metabolomics pathways may be associated with Cd-mediated chronic kidney injury. These findings provide a biochemical pathway for better understanding of cellulat mechanism underlying Cd-induced renal injury in hunmans.

A major concern regarding the collection and storage of biodiversity information is the inefficiency of conventional taxonomic approaches in dealing with a large number of species. This inefficiency has increased the demand for automated, rapid, and reliable molecular identification systems and large-scale biological databases. DNA-based taxonomic approaches are now arguably a necessity in biodiversity studies. In particular, DNA barcoding using short DNA sequences provides an effective molecular tool for species identification. We constructed a large-scale database system that holds a collection of 5531 barcode sequences from 2429 Korean species. The Korea Barcode of Life database (KBOL, http://koreabarcode.org) is a web-based database system that is used for compiling a high volume of DNA barcode data and identifying unknown biological specimens. With the KBOL system, users can not only link DNA barcodes and biological information but can also undertake conservation activities, including environmental management, monitoring, and detecting significant organisms.

Acute gastric anisakiasis is occurred when men intake a raw or inadequate cooked anisakis infected fish. The clinical symptoms are severe cramping abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and epigastric fulling sensation. It is well known that the whale is final host and man is opportunistic host. Recently, we experienced three cases of acute gastric anisakiasis. We think that acute gastric anisakiasis is probably rather undetected than rare disease. So through immediate gastrofiberscopy of patients with severe cramping epigstric pain occuring after ingestion of raw fish,we can find more cases of the anisakis larvae. In is adequate to abstract of larvae by biopsy forceps through gastrofiberscopy.

<P>The first total synthesis of 6-hydroxy-7-(hydroxymethyl)-4-methylenehexahydrocyclopenta[<I>c</I>]pyran-1(3<I>H</I>)-one has been accomplished. Cytomegalovirus is the leading cause of congenital viral infection. The prevalence rate of congenital infection is 0.2-2.5% of all live births. The infection may be congenital, but it is most often aquired during birth, breast milk, blood transfusions, organ transplantations, perinatal infections. The vast majority of these infections are chronic, subclinical forms, but symptomatic infections are sufficiently prevalent and dangerous to present a major unresolved health problem throughout the world. We experienced one case of congenital cytomegalovirus infection. The case was hospitalized in our hospital because of convulsion. She was characterized by microcephaly, hepatomegaly, convulsion, periventricular calcifications on brain CT. We could confirmed the congenital cytomegalovirus infection by shell vial culture. We report this case with brief rewiew fo literature.
