2003 Dementia and Neurocognitive Disorders Vol.2 No.2

Backgrounds and Objectives: Vascular dementia is a group of dementing disoders arising from various stroke syndrome. Among these. subcortical ischemic vascular dementia (SIVD) is regarded as a relatively distinct clinical entity. However, MRI patterns of SIVD are not homogenous. In some patients, lacunes are dominant, and in others, subcortical white matter changes are. This study was designed to compare risk factor profiles between SIVD with and without multiple lacunes. Methods: We divided 47 subjects (22 males, mean age. 68 years) recruited from VADAPET (Multicenter Trial For Evaluation Of The Changes In the PET Images Of Subcortical Vascular Dementia Patient) study into two groups one with more than 5 lacunes in deep gray matter (lacune group) and the other with 5 or less(non-lacune group) Clinical characteristics and laboratory findings of two groups were compared. Results: Nineteen of 47 patients (40%) belonged to the lacune group. The lacune and non-lacune groups d d not differ in the following variables: age, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia heart disease, history of stroke or TIA, history of trauma or major surgery, family history of hypertension stroke, or dementia, age at diagnosis of dementia, body mass index, white blood cell count, ESR, CRP, fibrinogen, hemoglobin A1C, total cholesterol. LDL cholesterol creatinine, proteinuria, glucosuria, and microhematuria. However, male sex, smoking alcohol. hemoglobin, and HDL cholesterol were possibly associated more with lacune group SIVD than with non-lacune group (p<0 1) Multivariate analyses revealed that smoking, hemoglobin, and HDL cholesterol were independent predictors of SIVD with multiple lacunes Conclusion: Our study suggests that SIVD with multiple lacunes may be significantly different in smoking habits hemoglobin, and HDL cholesterol from SIVD without multiple lacunes.

Radiofrequency ablation(RFA), as a form of minimally invasive therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma, has become an important treatment modality. Because of limitation of surgery, RFA has become standard therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma in some situations. But there are some complications of RFA such as bleeding, infection, hematoma, adjacent organ thermal damage including intestinal perforation, needle track seeding, and so on. There are few reports in the literature that systematically evaluate the incidence of needle tract seeding and its associated risk factors. And only 2 cases of needle tract seeding of hepatocellular carcinoma after RFA were reported in Korea. We report a case of needle tract seeding of hepatocellular carcinoma after RFA.

Establishment of Mass Propagation System of Virus-Free Sweetpotato Plants and Conservation

        Joon-Seol Lee,Mi-Nam Chung,Byeong-Choon Jeong,Young-Sup Ahn,Hag-Sin Kim,Jong-Suk Park,Jin-Ki Bang 韓國作物學會 2007 Korean journal of crop science Vol.52 No.2

Sweetpotato fields in Korea are highly infected with virus and virus like diseases that greatly diminish both yield and quality as indicated by field observations and laboratory tests. In order to solve this problem, there is an urgent need to produce and mass propagate virus-free planting materials for distribution to the farmers. These experiments were conducted, firstly, to determine the most appropriate culture media, nutrient solution, and cutting intervals to maintain growth and vigor of tissue cultured plantleta as mother plants for propagation in insect-proof greenhouse. And as a labor saving method, the production efficiency of plug trays for rapid propagation of stem cuttings as a source of planting materials was likewise evaluated. Results showed that plants grown in medium B supplied with 0.5 and 1.0 strength of MS nutrients had high growth rate, and 20-day cutting interval was the best. 72-plug tray was better than 128-plug. Secondly, it was to develop a technique for the production of first-generation seed roots using hydroponics cultivation system. The yield of virus-free plants propagated in the non-insect proof and open-field cultivation was 2,402 kg/10a, 6% higher than those in the insect-proof cultivation, and the rate of virus re-infection was 18% higher compared to 3.3% with insect-proof cultivation. Lastly, it was to investigate the growth performance of virus free plants in farmers' field. Differences were existed in the yield depending on the variety used, but virus free plants showed an increase of 6~24% over virus infected plants.

A New Sweetpotato Cultivar, "Matnami" suitable for Table Use

        Joon Seol Lee,Hag Sin Kim,Young Sup Ahn,Mi Nam Chung,Byeong Choon Jeong,Jin Ki Bang 한국육종학회 2007 한국육종학회지 Vol.39 No.2

“Matnami” is a new sweetpotato variety developed by Mokpo Experiment Station, National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA in 2006, for table use and food processing. This variety was selected from the cross between “Hongmi” and MI9510-12 in 1999. Seedling and line selections were performed from 2000 to 2002. Preliminary and advanced yield trials were carried out from 2003 to 2004. The regional yield trials were conducted at six locations from 2005 to 2006. “Matnami” has cordate leaf, green with purple vine and petiole, elliptic storage root, red skin and yellow flesh color of storage root. The average yield of storage root was 27.0 ton/ha in the regional yield trials, which was 11% higher than that of Yulmi variety. Number of storage roots over 50 gram per plant was 2.6. The average weight of one storage root was 173 gram. This variety is also resistant to fusarium wilt and nematode. In addition, steamed “Matnami” has higher polyphenol contents as 3.3 mg/g dw and higher biological activitiesas, which improve the bioactivity in human. The total sugar content was higher, thereby, sweeter than “Yulmi”. It shows lower (68.6℃) initial temperature of starch gelatinization and slower retrogradation process than “Yulmi”.

Varieties for Sweetpotato Tips Production as a Vegetable

        Joon Seol Lee,Young Sup Ahn,Mi Nam Chung,Hag Sin Kim,Byeong Choon Jeong,Jin Ki Bang 한국육종학회 2007 한국육종학회지 Vol.39 No.2

Sweetpotato tips are known to be very useful parts as a vegetable because of their high nutritive values and great biomass yield. This study was carried out to select a variety that is suitable to the tips of sweetpotatoes as vegetables. Twenty-two varieties were planted in polyethylene (PE) houses and upland field. The tips were cropped, tested and their tips' external characteristics, quantity, sweetness, toughness and taste were likewise tested. This research found that the external characteristics of the sweetpotato tips were mostly colored green or greenish purple and the leaves were of heart shape. When it comes to texture, the crops from the PE houses presented softer sense than those from the upland field, and due to the blanching, the degree of hardness was reduced by 60 percent. The varieties that presented soft texture after blanching were Yulmi, Geonmi, Hwangmi, Sinchunmi, M301, Eunmi, Juhwangmi, Singeonmi and Gogeonmi. The sweetness, which gives a great influence to the taste, was found to be 3.8 Brix°% on the average for raw tips of sweetpotatoes cropped in P.E. houses, lower than the crops from the upland field which yielded 4.6 Brix°%. By varieties, those that were commonly high in both P.E. houses and upland field crops were three kinds - Geonmi, Sincheonmi and Juhwangmi. The yield derived was on the average 150 tons/ha, which was considerably high yield, compared to the greens like the Korean leeks, which were repeatedly cropped once planted, like the tips. The investigation into the external appearances, texture, sweetness and acceptability found that the varieties that are suitable for sweetpotato tips production are Yulmi, Geonmi, Hwangmi, Yeonmi, Chinmi and Juhwangmi.

      • Clinical Relevance of Genomic Changes in Recurrent Pediatric Solid Tumors

        Lee, Boram,Lee, Ji Won,Shim, Joon Ho,Joung, Je-Gun,Yun, Jae Won,Bae, Joon Seol,Shin, Hyun-Tae,Sung, Ki Woong,Park, Woong-Yang Neoplasia Press 2018 Translational oncology Vol.11 No.6

PURPOSE: Relapsed/refractory pediatric cancers show poor prognosis; however, their genomic patterns remain unknown. To investigate the genetic mechanisms of tumor relapse and therapy resistance, we characterized genomic alterations in diagnostic and relapsed lesions in patients with relapsed/refractory pediatric solid tumors using targeted deep sequencing. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A targeted sequencing panel covering the exons of 381 cancer genes was used to characterize 19 paired diagnostic and relapsed samples from patients with relapsed/refractory pediatric solid tumors. RESULTS: The mean coverage for all samples was 930.6× (SD = 213.8). Among the 381 genes, 173 single nucleotide variations (SNVs)/insertion-deletions (InDels), 100 copy number alterations, and 1 structural variation were detected. A total of 72.6% of SNVs in primary tumors were also found in recurrent lesions, and 27.2% of SNVs in recurrent tumors had newly occurred. Among SNVs/InDels detected only in recurrent lesions, 71% had a low variant allele fraction (<10%). Patients were classified into three categories based on the mutation patterns after cancer treatment. A significant association between the major mutation patterns and clinical outcome was observed. Patients whose relapsed tumor had fewer mutations than the diagnostic sample tended to be older, had longer progression-free survival, and achieved complete remission after relapse. Contrastingly, patients whose genetic profile only had concordant mutations without any change had the worst outcome. CONCLUSIONS: We characterized genomic changes in recurrent pediatric solid tumors. These findings could help to understand the biology of relapsed childhood cancer and to develop personalized treatment based on their genetic profile.
