In November 2021, 14 international travel-related severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) B.1.1.529 (omicron) variant of concern (VOC) patients were detected in South Korea. Epidemiologic investigation revealed community transmission of the omicron VOC. A total of 80 SARS-CoV-2 omicron VOC-positive patients were identified until December 10, 2021 and 66 of them reported no relation to the international travel. There may be more transmissions with this VOC in Korea than reported.
Optimizing the Production of Red Pigments with Antioxidant Effect by Using Perenniporia fraxinea
Jiwoo KIM,Jungheon LEE 한국생물공학회 2021 한국생물공학회 학술대회 Vol.2021 No.10
In this study, the optimal medium conditions for the maximal production of red pigment using Perenniporia fraxinea mycelium were identified and the antioxidant ability of red pigment was evaluated. The red pigment produced from natural products has an antioxidant effect and can be effectively used to remove free radicals. After culturing for 3 weeks at 25℃. and 150 rpm, the culture medium was centrifuged and absorbance was measured at 300 ㎚ to measure the degree of redness of the medium according to the culture conditions. The red pigment is formed through the medium using malt extract with a low nitrogen source (about 0.1%) asthe main raw material, but when the nitrogen source content increases, the production of the red pigment decreases. P. fraxinea grown in the malt extract-free medium did not produce red pigment even though a small amount of nitrogen was added to the medium. In the case of a medium using fructose as a carbon source and tryptone as a nitrogen source, more red pigment was produced. As a result of using the polyphenol method for antioxidant measurement, the redder the color of the culture supernatant, the better the antioxidant activity.

The attention has been raised on Momordica charantia as the prevention and treatment of diabetes mellitus. We fermented Momordica charantia extract (MC) by probiotic Leuconostoc mesenteroides MKSR (MKSR), Leu. mesenteroides MKJW (MKJW) or Lactobacillus plantarum MKHA 15 (MKHA15) and evaluated their functionalities. After 24h fermentation, MKSR, MKJW, and MKHA15 significantly increased the number of their viable cells with pH decrease. The α-glucosidase inhibitory activity (AGI) was the highest in MKJW-MC (58.01%) and MKSR-MC (54.66%) when fermented 12°Brix MC, 4% sucrose, and 1% maltose at pH 6.5. Both fermented MCs significantly enhanced their DPPH radical scavenging ability. MKHA15-MC did barely affect AGI and DPPH radical scavenging ability. Increased acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) inhibitory activities were observed in all fermented MCs compared to MC extract. Strong AChE and BuChE were obtained in MKSR-MC. It might be suggested that probiotic MKSR or MKJW fermented MC can be used as potential multi-heath functional products for anti-diabetic, anti-dementia, and antioxidant treatment.

Recent studies have demonstrated the disassociation between the mu and beta rhythms of electroencephalogram (EEG) during motor imagery tasks. The proposed algorithm in this paper uses a fully data-driven multivariate empirical mode decomposition (MEMD) in order to obtain the mu and beta rhythms from the nonlinear EEG signals. Then, the strong uncorrelating transform complex common spatial patterns (SUTCCSP) algorithm is applied to the rhythms so that the complex data, constructed with the mu and beta rhythms, becomes uncorrelated and its pseudocovariance provides supplementary power difference information between the two rhythms. The extracted features using SUTCCSP that maximize the interclass variances are classified using various classification algorithms for the separation of the left- and right-hand motor imagery EEG acquired from the Physionet database. This paper shows that the supplementary information of the power difference between mu and beta rhythms obtained using SUTCCSP provides an important feature for the classification of the left- and right-hand motor imagery tasks. In addition, MEMD is proved to be a preferred preprocessing method for the nonlinear and nonstationary EEG signals compared to the conventional IIR filtering. Finally, the random forest classifier yielded a high performance for the classification of the motor imagery tasks.
