Objective : To compare the outcomes of anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF), oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF), and transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) in terms of global sagittal alignment. Methods : From January 2007 to December 2019, 141 adult patients who underwent multilevel interbody fusion for lumbar degenerative disorders were enrolled. Regarding the approach, patients were divided into the ALIF (n=23), OLIF (n=60), and TLIF (n=58) groups. Outcomes, including local radiographic parameters and global sagittal alignment, were then compared between the treatment groups. Results : Regarding local radiographic parameters, ALIF and OLIF were superior to TLIF in terms of the change in the anterior disc height (7.6±4.5 mm vs. 6.9±3.2 mm vs. 4.7±2.9 mm, p<0.001), disc angle (-10.0°±6.3° vs. -9.2°±5.2° vs. -5.1°±5.1°, p<0.001), and fused segment lordosis (-14.5°±11.3° vs. -13.8°±7.5° vs. -7.4°±9.1°, p<0.001). However, regarding global sagittal alignment, postoperative lumbar lordosis (-42.5°±9.6° vs. -44.4°±11.6° vs. -40.6°±12.3°, p=0.210), pelvic incidence-lumbar lordosis mismatch (7.9°±11.3° vs. 6.7°±11.6° vs. 11.5°±13.0°, p=0.089), and the sagittal vertical axis (24.3±28.5 mm vs. 24.5±34.0 mm vs. 25.2±36.6 mm, p=0.990) did not differ between the groups. Conclusion : Although the anterior approaches were superior in terms of local radiographic parameters, TLIF achieved adequate global sagittal alignment, comparable to the anterior approaches.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We study the Brownian thermal motion of a colloidal model system made by emulsifying hot liquid <I>α</I>-eicosene wax into an aqueous surfactant solution of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). When this waxy oil-in-water emulsion is cooled below <I>α</I>-eicosene's melting point of <I>T</I> <SUB> <I>c</I> </SUB> ≃ 25 °C, the microscale emulsion droplets solidify, effectively yielding a dispersed particulate system. So, the interiors of these wax droplets can be tuned from a viscous liquid to an elastic solid through very modest changes in absolute temperature. Using the multiple light scattering technique of diffusing wave spectroscopy (DWS), which is very sensitive to small-scale motion and shape fluctuations of dispersed colloidal objects, we show that the thermal fluctuations of the interfaces of these liquid droplets at higher temperature, seen in the DWS intensity–intensity correlation function at early times, effectively disappear when these droplets solidify at lower temperature. Thus, we show that the early-time behavior of this DWS correlation function can be used to probe mechanical properties of viscoelastic soft materials dispersed as droplets.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

The controlling of α-glucosidase activity plays a crucial role in type II diabetes. Artemisia capillaris (AC) is well known for various pharmacological effects such as anti-dementia, antioxidant, and anti-pathogenic bacterial effects. The fermentation was performed to increase α-glucosidase inhibitory activity (AGI) and maintain cholinesterase inhibition of AC by probiotic Leuconostoc mesenteroides MKJW (MKJW). The optimal fermentation condition to increase AGI was established for 17 design experiments with different levels of AC extract (X₁, 1-5°brix), sucrose (X₂, 200-800 mM), and maltose (X₃, 0-400 mM) as independent variables by response surface methods. The quadratic model for AGI was significantly appropriate (p<0.05). It predicted that the strongest AGI would be 78.57% when MKJW fermented 1°brix AC, 586 mM of sucrose, and 239 mM of maltose for 24h. The predicted dependent variable was not significantly different from the actual value (p>0.05). In conclusion, the MKJW fermented AC under the optimal condition might be used as probiotic food or food ingredient with multifunctional effects.
Pulmonary Function Difference in Sasang Constitutional Types

<P>The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in pulmonary function among Sasang constitutional types in young adults. The Sasang Constitutional Analysis Tool (SCAT), pulmonary function tests (PFTs), and cardiopulmonary exercise tests were conducted in 417 participants from 2009 to 2015. Subjects with the Tae-Eum (TE) type had significantly higher inspiratory capacity (IC) and inspiratory reserve volume (IRV) values than those with the So-Yang (SY) and So-Eum (SE) types (<I>P</I> < 0.0001). The TE and SY types showed higher forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 sec (FEV<SUB>1</SUB>) values than the SE type (<I>P</I> < 0.0001). An increase in IRV and a decrease in expiratory reserve volume (ERV) in TE type males remained even after adjusting for covariate factors. These results indicate that young adults with the TE type have weaker lung function than those with the other constitutional types, suggesting its innate physiological pulmonary features.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We report on the colloidal dynamics and rheology of liquid droplet emulsions and solid particle suspensions over a wide range of volume fractions. Diffusing wave spectroscopy and rheometry were utilized to study the micro/macroscale properties of 1-eicosene wax particles dispersed in water. By changing the temperature, the wax droplets change their properties from soft to hard or vice versa, which, depending on the density, may affect the system properties in a different way. Our measurements in the high volume fraction regime focus on the elasticity index and the plateau storage modulus, G p ′ . The results show a more pronounced increase of the modulus for the wax particle suspensions around the random close packing volume fraction compared to the emulsion.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
A Reliable Data Transport Protocol for Internet-accessible Wireless Sensor Networks

In Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for a variety of applications, users will be provided with measured data from remote sensors through wireless communication. ZigBee is incompatible with other IP-based networks and cannot be easily connected to the Internet. If using IPv6 instead of ZigBee as a network layer, numerous sensor nodes can have their unique IP address. In the Internet, the transport layer over IP is either TCP or UDP. TCP header yields more overhead than UDP header while UDP is an intrinsically unreliable protocol. WSN requires low overhead but reliable delivery and this paper suggests using Reliable UDP in the transport layer.

The IEEE 802.16j task group uses the relay station (RS) for the extension of the coverage of the BS and enhancement of throughput. However, if a number of relay stations in a BS cell, the RSs may result in both more frequent handover and higher co-channel interference. To solve this problem, the grouping is required specified in IEEE 802.16j basement document. The selecting method of parent RS managing the group is not specified in base line document of IEEE 802.16j. We propose how to select the parent node in the RS group.

Among the myriad of technology-driven experiments on innovative artistic ideas, numerous attempts have been made to propose new forms of cross-disciplinary, cross-media art based on digital technology. This research extends the general concept of multimedia music to discuss meaningful artistic convergence based on synesthesia, and suggests the fundamental concepts of interactive multimedia music production system.

The presence of high powers of wire and coil diameters, e.g., terms involving d⁴, etc., result in difficulty for gradient methods. The simulated annealing algorithm is especially attractive on the spring optimization problem. The objective is to increase the factor of safety. Since the spring can fail by fatigue or by yielding, our objective is to maximize the smaller of the two safety factors of fatigue and in yielding. To determine the optimum wire diameter d and coil diameter D such that alternating shear stress, mean shear stress, endurance limit, strength, and torsional natural frequency are satisfied. Several optimum design candidates were obtained to avoid resonance and excessive noise in the lock-up clutch of and automatic transmission. The determination of number, location, number of turns, and deflection of damper springs play an important role in reducing vibration and noise in the system. A recent need for a thinner torque converter require the optimum double springs attached to a clutch piston to fit a slender torus case. In this study, change in natural frequencies has been investigated according to short or long travel damper springs.
