        This study attempted to determine the degree of asbestos release from the aging slate roof by comparing the asbestos content in the slate roof rain gutter with a colored steel plate (tin plate) over the slate roof. Four slate roof houses located in Haengmok-ri, Asan-si, Chungcheongnam-do, and one house constructed with a colored steel plate on the slate roof were selected to collect the sediment of the roof rain gutter. The asbestos fiber content was calculated by a point counting method using a polarization microscope after pretreatment with conversion treatment and hydrochloric acid treatment. The average asbestos content of the four slate roof rain gutter were 1.89%. However, asbestos was not detected in the Slate covering roof rain gutter, which were constructed on the slate roof. Asbestos fiber content was the highest at 2.89% in the slate roof rain gutter installed in 1976, followed by 2.44% in 1953. From the above results, it is necessary to minimize secondary damage as asbestos fibers released from slate roof houses to the surrounding atmosphere or leaked from slate roofs as rainwater may cause soil pollution and seriously affect residents' health. Although covering with colored steel plates (tin plates) has been shown to prevent the leakage of asbestos fibers to some extent, it is believed that a policy alternative to remove the slate roof as soon as possible is needed to solve the fundamental problem.

      • Robot assisted laparoscopic myomectomy, an alternative to laparotomy for numerous myomas (over 10)

        목적: To evaluate the feasibility of robot-assisted laparoscopic myomectomy in multiple myomas over 10 in number and to compare outcomes with open myomectomy. 방법: This study is a retrospective chart review of 216 patients who underwent robot assisted laparoscopic myomectomy by a single operator at St. Mary's Fibroid Center in Seoul between October 1, 2010 and January 31, 2014; in the selected patients, 10 or more uterine myomas were removed. We reported the characteristics of the removed myomas including the with maximum diameter of the myomas, the sum of the diameter of each myoma, and the types of the combined surgeries. we organized surgical outcomes that were measured including the operative time, estimated intraoperative blood loss, length of hospital stay, and perioperative complications. And we compared these surgical outcomes with cases of open myomectomy. 결과: A total of 13 women underwent the removal of 10 or more uterine myomas by robotics. The patient age was 37.6±3.6 years, and all of the patients were nulliparous. The operation time was 389.8±100.6 min. The number of removed myomas for each case was 13.1±3.8 (range 10-20). The myoma with the maximum diameter was 6.5±0.7 centimeters (range 5.0-8.0 centimeters). The sum of the diameters was 34.9 ±9.6 centimeters (range 20.0-54.5 centimeter. The Estimated blood loss during operation was 219.2±158 milliliter. . The postoperative hospital stay was 2.6±0.6 days. Compared to laparotomic adenomyomectomy, robotic surgery has strengths that enables less blood loss, shorter hospital stay and decreasing risk of blood transfusion although it takes more operation time. 결론: This report is the first to describe the feasibility of robot-assisted laparoscopic myomectomy in multiple myomas over 10 in number. In robot- assisted laparoscopic myomectomies, supplementary techniques including preoperative MRI assessment, intraoperative sonographic navigation, and palpation by an assistant to localize the myomas are helpful in overcoming the absence of haptic perception. This technique is considered to be an alternative to laparotomy for more than 10 myomas.

      • A Rapid and Sensitive Two-Site Sandwich Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay for Detection of ${\alpha}$-Fetoprotein in Human Serum

        A rapid and sensitive method has been developed to detect a-fetoprotein (AFP) in human serum by a two-site sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) for human AFP within 1 h. To obtain the most sensitive and reliable MAbs. 12 kinds of MAbs (HPJ1 to HPJ12) as a capture antibody and 4 kinds of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) conjugated MAbs as a tracer antibody were investigated. Among these, only HPJ 10-HRP conjugated HPJ 1 (HPJ 10-HPJ $1^*$) and HPJ 11-HRP conjugated HPJ 10 (HPJ 11-HPJ $10^*$) were chosen as candidates based on the linearity of the standard curve and the sensitivity of the assay. To further characterize these two pairs. MAbs against human AFP were purified from hybridoma cells. conjugated with HRP. and then characterized to optimize the two-site sandwich ELISA The HPJ 10-HPJ $1^*$ pair showed a sensitivity of 1 ng/ml and a better reproducibility than the HPJ 11-HPJ $10^*$ pair when the human sera were incubated at $37^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. The results obtained for 480 randomly selected human sera showed 0~20 ng/ml of AFP values for the normal human sera. To test the utility of our kit, AFP concentrations were determined for 951 human sera (including 85 normal sera, 480 random blood sera, 213 HBsAg-positives. 50 anti-HCV antibody positives. and 47 malignant diseases) and compared with other commercially available AFP detecting kits. These results show that the present two-site sandwich ELISA method is a rapid, sensitive, and reliable procedure for detecting AFP in human serum.

      • Crosslinked anion exchange membranes with primary diamine-based crosslinkers for vanadium redox flow battery application

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A series of polysulfone-based crosslinked anion exchange membranes (AEMs) with primary diamine-based crosslinkers has been prepared via simple a crosslinking process as low-cost and durable membranes for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs). Chloromethylated polysulfone is used as a precursor polymer for crosslinked AEMs (CAPSU-x) with different degrees of crosslinking. Among the developed AEMs, CAPSU-2.5 shows outstanding dimensional stability and anion (Cl<SUP>−</SUP>, SO<SUB>4</SUB> <SUP>2−</SUP>, and OH<SUP>−</SUP>) conductivity. Moreover, CAPSU-2.5 exhibits much lower vanadium ion permeability (2.72 × 10<SUP>−8</SUP> cm<SUP>2</SUP> min<SUP>−1</SUP>) than Nafion 115 (2.88 × 10<SUP>−6</SUP> cm<SUP>2</SUP> min<SUP>−1</SUP>), which results in an excellent coulombic efficiency of 100%. The chemical and operational stabilities of the membranes have been investigated via ex situ soaking tests in 0.1 M VO<SUB>2</SUB> <SUP>+</SUP> solution and in situ operation tests for 100 cycles, respectively.       • Ether-free polymeric anion exchange materials with extremely low vanadium ion permeability and outstanding cell performance for vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) application

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Ether-free poly(<I>p</I>-phenylene)-based anion exchange membrane materials with outstanding vanadium ion blocking properties are reported. The synthesized ionomers with a rigid backbone structure show small dimensional variations despite the high ion exchange capacities. Among the synthesized membranes, the QPPP-2 membrane with ion exchange capacity of 2.1 meq·g<SUP>−1</SUP> exhibits high anion (OH<SUP>−</SUP>, SO<SUB>4</SUB> <SUP>2−</SUP>, and Cl<SUP>−</SUP>) conductivity. The QPPP-2 membrane shows an extremely low diffusion coefficient (2.12 × 10<SUP>−9</SUP> cm<SUP>2</SUP> min<SUP>−1</SUP>) for VO<SUP>2+</SUP>, which is much lower than that of Nafion 115 (2.88 × 10<SUP>−6</SUP> cm<SUP>2</SUP> min<SUP>−1</SUP>), indicating the vanadium ion blocking property of QPPP-2. Moreover, the chemical and operational stabilities of the membranes are investigated <I>via</I> ex situ soaking tests in 0.1 M VO<SUB>2</SUB> <SUP>+</SUP> solution and in situ operation tests for 100 cycles, respectively. The vanadium redox flow battery single cell assembled with the QPPP-2 membrane exhibits a coulombic efficiency of 99%, voltage efficiency of 87%, and energy efficiency of 86% during 100 cycles at 80 mA cm<SUP>−2</SUP>.         반응표면분석법을 이용한 배 퓌레 열수처리 조건 최적화

        본 연구는 열수처리 온도(50, 70, 90°C) 및 열수처리 시간(15, 30, 45분)을 달리하여 배 퓌레를 제조한 후 품질특성을 분석하여 반응표면분석법을 통해 최적의 열수처리 조건을 구하고자 하였고, 중심합성계획법에 따라 총 9가지의 실험점에서 진행하였다. 열수처리 온도 및 시간을 독립변수로 정하고, 품질특성에 관련된 적색도, ΔE값, 일반세균, 대장균군, polyphenol oxidase 활성, 총 폴리페놀 함량, 총 플라보노이드 함량을 종속변수로 설정하였다. 독립변수가 종속변수에 미치는 영향에 대해 분석한 결과, 적색도와 갈변을 나타내는 ΔE값은 각각 -0.38~1.20, 0.97~11.88의 범위로 측정되었고, 반응식의 R2은 각각 0.9754, 0.9818이었다. 일반세균 및 대장균군의 생균수는 각각 0.00~4.91 log CFU/mL, 0.00~4.03 log CFU/mL의 범위였고, 반응식의 R²은 0.9849, 0.9714였다. 갈변의 원인이 되는 polyphenol oxidase 활성은 122.57~235.13 unit 범위였으며, 반응식의 R²은 0.8616의 값을 보였다. 배 퓌레의 유효성분으로 총 폴리페놀 함량 및 총 플라보노이드 함량은 각각 19.33~24.54 GAE mg/100 g, 4.56~5.78 GAE mg/100 g 범위였으며, 이때 반응식의 R²은 각각 0.9181, 0.9097을 나타내었다. 이를 바탕으로 contour map을 superimposing 하여 최적 열수처리 조건을 설정한 결과, 최적화된 열수처리 조건의 온도범위는 69.3~80.4°C, 시간 범위는 16.8~25.8분으로 나타났으며, 최적점은 74.6°C, 20.7분으로 나타났다. 이에 대해 모델의 신뢰성을 검증하기 위해 예측값과 실험값을 비교한 결과, 각 반응변수의 실험값은 모두 예측값의 95% 신뢰구간 및 예측구간 범위에 들어와 모델의 적합성을 확인하였다. This study analyzed the quality characteristics of pear puree by varying the hydrothermal treatment temperature (50, 70, and 90°C) and time (15, 30, and 45 min) and sought to determine the optimal hydrothermal treatment conditions through the response surface methodology. A total of nine experimental points were studied according to the central composite design. The temperature and time were set as independent variables, and the redness, ΔE value, aerobic bacteria, coliform group, polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity, total polyphenol content (TPC), and total flavonoid content (TFC) related to the quality characteristics were set as dependent variables. The redness and the ΔE value were measured as −0.38∼1.20 and 0.97∼11.88, respectively, and the R² value was 0.9754 and 0.9818, respectively. The R2 value of viable cell counts were 0.9849 and 0.9714 in the aerobic bacteria and coliform groups. The PPO activity was 122.57∼235.13 g/min, and the R² value was 0.8616. The TPC and TFC as active ingredients of pear puree were in the range of 19.33∼24.54 and 4.56∼5.78 GAE mg/100 g, respectively, and the R² values were 0.9181 and 0.9097, respectively. Based on this, the contour map was superimposed to set the optimal hydrothermal treatment conditions. The optimum points derived were 74.6°C and 20.7 min. When the predicted and the experimental values were compared to verify the reliability of the model, all the experimental values of each of the response variables were within the 95% confidence and prediction intervals, confirming the suitability of the model.

      • Enhanced Extraction of trans-Resveratrol from Polygonum cuspidatum by a Combination of Thermal and Enzymatic Treatment

        Resveratrol (RES), a naturally occurring phytoalexin, has been known for health beneficial functions, such as cardioprotective, antihypertensive, and antiaging properties. The root of Polygonum cuspidatum Sieb. et Zucc. (P. cuspidatum) is extensively used as a good source of trans-RES, the most bioavailable form of RES. Our previous study showed an improved conversion rate of piceid (PD) present in grape peel into RES by pre-heating at 95°C for 10 min, followed enzymatic hydrolysis at 50°C for 60 min. In this study, we examined if combined thermal and enzymatic treatment could maximize extractability of PD and RES from P. cuspidatum. Results from this study showed that the treatment of P. cuspidatum with Viscozyme dramatically increased the conversion of PD into RES as well as the entire extractability of RES and PD among several enzymes tested. Furthermore, 60% and 80% ethanolic solvents showed the best extraction yield of RES. The extraction method established in this study is a low-cost green processing strategy and could be applied to maximize extraction of bioactive trans-RES from P. cuspidatum.

        백서의 심실세동성 심정지 모델에서 해마신경세포 손상에 대한 단백질 합성저해제의 효과

        Background: The goal of successful resuscitation is not only to stop the process of ischemia as soon as possible but also to overcome the secondary injury process after resuscitation, which involves a complex interplay of mechanisms. Brain damage accompanying cardiac arrest and resuscitation is frequent and devastating. Cells die by one of two mechanisms: necrosis or delayed neuronal death. Delayed neuronal death may require protein synthesis. Neurons in the CA1 subfield of the hippocampus are selectively vulnerable to death after injury by ischemia and reperfusion. Death of these neurons occurs after an interval of 1 or 2 days. We assessed the effects of a protein synthesis inhibitor, cycloheximide(CHX), on hippocampal neuronal death of rats by using the ventricular fibrillation cardiac arrest(VFCA) model. Methods: The effect of CHX(3 mg/kg, s.c.) on hippocampal neuronal death was studied in two groups of 18 rats each, one group being subjected to a 2-min VFCA and the other to a 3-min VFCA. Each group was divided into three subgroups: control(groupⅠ,Ⅱ) without subcutaneous injection of CHX, "esp-12" of group Ⅰ/Ⅱ treated with CHX 12 hours after return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), and "exe-24" of group Ⅰ/Ⅱ treated with CHX 24 hours after ROSC. The coronal sections of the hippocampus levels were stained with hematoxylin-eosin after 72 hours of survival. The histologic damage score(HDS) was used to assign a score to the total number of damaged neurons counted in each of the hippocampal CA1 subfields. Results: 1. There were not significant differences in heart rates, blood pressures, blood sugar, and blood gas in group I & Ⅱ during the pre-arrest steady state or at 5 min and 30 min after ROSC. 2. In group I & Ⅱ, the HDS, were significantly reduced in rats(I exp-12, 1.1 ±0.6;Ⅰexp-24, 1.3 ±0.5;Ⅱ exp-12, 1.4±0.7; and Ⅱ exp-24, 1.8±0.8) treated with CHX 12 hours or 24 hours after ROSC than control rats(1,2.5 ±0.9;Ⅱ,2.9±0.8)(p<0.05). Conclusion: These results suggest that delayed hippocampal neuronal death from ischemic insult after ventricular fibrillation cardiac arrest followed by resuscitation can be prevented by a protein synthesis inhibitor, CHX. Further experimental studies of the action mechanism of protein synthesis inhibitors to delayed neuronal death and clinical applications are required.

        이동형 스크러버를 이용한 암모니아 및 톨루엔의 제거 효율

        본 연구는 국내에서 다량 취급되고 있는 암모니아 및 톨루엔을 흄 상태로 노출시킨 후 흡수/흡착방법을 달리한 이동형 스크러버를 이용해 각 유해화학물질의 제거효율을 비교 분석하였다. 이동형 스크러버는 기 개발된 장치를 개선하여 와류세정에 의한 흡수, 유입풍속 조절의 장점을 살리고, 활성탄 및 카본필터를 통한 기체상 유해화학물질의 흡착방법 도입을 통해 단점을 보완하였다. 개선된 장치는 기초성능평가를 통해 적정 제어풍속이 검증되었고, 5% 암모니아수 용액을 흄 상태로 노출시켜 후드 흡입부, 송풍기 배출부 및 세정기가 정상 작동함을 확인하였다. 흡수/흡착방법에 따른 암모니아 제거효율은 90분 경과 후 C≥PCA>SWA 순으로 가장 우수한 SWA 군의 노출 농도별 제거 효율은 시간이 경과할수록 노출 농도와 무관하게 배출 농도는 증가되었고, 세정액의 pH는 산성에서 염기성으로 변화되었다. 또한, 시간 경과에 따른 노출 농도 별 세정액의 pH 변화와 배출구 농도 변화 사이에 0.9429~0.9491 수준의 정의 상관관계를 나타내었다. 흡착방법에 따른 톨루엔의 제거 효율은 초기 10분 경과 후 배출구농도에서 C>CMA≥GCA 순을 나타내다 90분 경과까지 일정한 농도로 유지되었다. 가장 우수한 GCA 군의 노출 농도 별 제거 효율은 초기 10분 경과 시 노출 농도에 비례하여 배출 농도가 높은 경향이었다. 이와 같은 결과를 통해 개선된 이동형 스크러버는 중화반응에 의해 산성 또는 염기성 유해화학물질의 제거뿐 아니라, 활성탄 등의 흡착기능 개선을 통해 VOCs 제거에도 효과적이었다. 하지만, 실제 현장에서 활용이 가능하도록 세정액 pH를 지속적으로 유지하여 연속적으로 흡수 제거할 수 있는 방법과 노출되는 화학물질 농도와 흡착제의 관계에서 파괴점, 포화점, 흡착속도 등의 물리적인 요소가 추가적인 연구를 통해 도출되어야 할 것이다. BACKGROUND: The mobile vortex wet scrubber was developed to remove the harmful chemicals from accidental releases. However, there was a disadvantage that it was limitedly used for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as toluene according to the physicochemical properties. This study compared the removal efficiencies of an improved mobile scrubber on toluene and ammonia by applying diverse adsorption and absorption methods. METHODS AND RESULTS: The removal efficiencies on harmful chemicals were examined using various adsorption and absorption methods of water vortex process (C), phosphoric acid-impregnated activated carbon adsorption (PCA), pH-controlled water (pH 2.5) vortex process absorption with sulfuric acid (SWA) after ammonia exposure, granular activated carbon adsorption (GCA), and activated carbon mat adsorption (CMA) after toluene exposure. As a result, the best removal efficiency was shown in the SWA for ammonia and GCA for toluene. Also, the SWA and GCA methods were compared with different concentration levels. In the case of ammonia exposure (5, 10 and 25%), there was no difference by concentration levels, and the concentration in the outlet gradually increased, with pH change from acid to base. In the case of toluene exposure (50, 75 and 100%), the outlet concentration was higher relative to the exposure concentration in the initial 10 min, but the outlet concentration was remained steady after 10 min. CONCLUSION: The newly improved mobile scrubber was also effective in removing VOCs through adsorption techniques (activated carbon, activated carbon fiber, carbon mat filter etc.), as well as removing acid-base harmful chemicals by neutralization reaction.

        갑상선 기능항진증 환자에서 인슐린감수성 및 인슐린분비능의 변화

        The impairement of glucose metabolism is frequently associated in hyperthyroidism. The present study was performed to determine the effect of the thyroid hormone excess on insulin sensitivity and on insulin secretory function in vivo. Ten newly diagnosed hyperthyroid patients and fifteen healthy control subjects were subjected to frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance tests(FSIGT) after an overnight fast. Insulin sensitivity, represented by the insulin sensitivity index(S_1), was assessed by minimal model analysis of FSIGT data. Insulin secretion was measured by the total area under the insulin curve after glucose load. The results were as follows. 1) The K_G values, which represent glucose tolerance, were not different between the hyperthyroid patients and the normals(2.2+-0.3 vs. 2.5+-0.3%/min, p$gt;0.05). 2) S_1 was significantly decreased in the hyperthyroid patients in comparison to the normals(7.5+-1.4 vs. 2.6+-0.3X10^-4 min^-1/uU/ml, p$lt;0.05). 3) The basal insulin concentration was higher in the hyperthyroid patients than in the normals(8.3+-2.4 vs. 4.6+-0.4 uU/ml, p=0.07). In addition, the insulin secretory response to a glucose load was increased in the hyperthyroid patients as evidenced by the peak plasma insulin level(168.2+-30.4 vs. 89.2+-13.9 uU/ml, p$lt;0.05) and by the total area under the insulin curve(2641.1+-443.2 vs. 1696.7+-204.3 min uU/ml, p$lt;0.05). These results clearly demonstrated that insulin sensitivity was impaired in these newly diagnosed hyperthyroid patients. However, glucose tolerance was maintained by the increased insulin secretion (J Kor Soc Endocrinol 9:108-114, 1994).
