Activated sludge samples were collected from a municipal sewage treatment plant and used for enrichment of mixed cultures with aniline as the sole carbon and nitrogen source. Several aniline-degrading bacteria were obtained, and two strains which had the excellent aniline degradability were isolated, and designated as HJ-1 and HJ-2, respectively. Morphological observation and various physiological characterization were performed for the isolates. In order to understand the degradative pathway of aniline by the isolates, catechol was sprayed on the individual colonies grown on solid mineral media containing aniline. As the result, color was changed to yellow, and this indicated that the isolates degraded aniline by a meta fission mechanism.

1. 새로 육성된 4개의 대덕찰 찰옥수수 교잡종에 대한 간장은 대조구인 찰옥 1호보다 큰 반면에 개화기는 약 4∼7일 늦었으며, 모든 공시 교잡종의 주당 분얼수는 한 개이하의 무효분얼로 나타났다. 2. 새로 육성된 대덕찰옥수수의 이삭길이와 직경은 대조구인 찰옥 1호보다 크게 나타났으며, 특히 대덕찰옥수수 1호와 2호의 과피두께는 대구조보다 얇았고, 당도 역시 높게 나타나 우수 교잡종으로 평가되었다. Stem height of the new developed "Daedekchals" waxy hybrids were higher than check hybrid. Chalok #1, while days to tasseling were delayed about four to seven days. Number of tillers per plant of the these new hybrids including check were appeared to be one less as non-effective tiller. Ear length and diameter of the new waxy hybrids were longer and thicker than check, respectively. In addition pericarp thickness of the Daedekchal #1 and #2 among new developed waxy hybrids were thinner and sugar content were higher than check.

Objectives: This study was produced to examine the effects of moxibustion that had been played important role to traditional oriental medical treatment on disease. Recently, it was reported that moxi-tar which is generated in the process of moxibustion as burning combustibles decreased nitric oxide(NO) and inducible NO synthase (iNOS) generation in cellular experiments. Methods: Carrageenan-induced arthritis rat model was used to test the effect of moxi-tar as a chronic pain model. Diluted moxi-tar was single injected in several acupoints or combined with electroacupuncture (1 ms, 2 Hz, and 2 mA) into contralateral ST36 acupoint for 30 min to assess the synergic effects. After the treatment, behavioral tests measuring stepping force were periodically conducted during the next 12 hours. Endogenous NO and iNOS, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and c-Fos protein expression in the spinal cord were examined on a rat model of carrageenan-induced arthritis. Results : After the induction of arthritis, rats subsequently showed a reduced stepping force of the affected limb for at least the next 4 days. The reduced stepping force of the limb was presumably due to a painful knee, since oral injection of indomethacin produced temporary improvement of weight bearing. Moxi-tar produced significant improvement of stepping force of the hindlimb affected by the arthritis lasting at least 9 hours. The magnitude of this improvement was equivalent to that obtained after an oral injection of 3 mg/kg of indomethacin and this improvement of stepping force was interpreted as an analgesic effect. Moxi-tar produced the improvement of stepping force of the affected hindlimb in a dose-dependent manner. Both NO production and iNOS, COX-2 protein expression increased by arthritis were suppressed by moxi-tar. Moxi-tar on combination with electroacupuncture (EA) produced more powerful and longer lasting improvement of stepping force of the hindlimb affected by the arthritis than either moxi-tar or EA did. Conclusion : The present study suggest that moxi-tar produces a potent analgesic effect on the chronic knee arthritis pain model in the rat and that moxi-tar-induced analgesia modulate endogenous NO through the suppression of iNOS/COX-2 protein expression.
식품중 중금속 규격 과학화를 위한 조사연구(Ⅲ) : 음료수의 중금속 향량에 대하여 Heavy metal contents beverages

본 연구는 국내에 유통되고 있는 음료류중 중금속 함량을 파악하여 식품공전 제 ·개정시 과학적 기초자료로 활용하고자 수행하였다. 출 2☞7여건의 음료류에 대하여 유도결합플라스마 분광기(ICP), 원자홉광광도 계(AAS) 및 수은분석기 등을 치용하여 납, 카드윰 등 중금속함량을 측정하였으며 그 결과는 다음과 같다 [단위 : min-ma)t(irran) ; mrk3 ; f : 0.0001-0.0025(0.0003), As :불검출곰.OB45(0.0003), Pb : 불검출-0.0893(0.0041),Cd ' 불검출곤.0064(0.0011), Cfl : 불검출.(i9(0.05), Mn : 불검출글.찌(0.16), Zn : 불검출-12.85(0.뽀), Sn :불검출-45.36(1.97). 본 조사결과 우리나라에서 유통되고 있는 음료류 중 납 등 중금속 함량은 외국의 모니터랑 결과와 유사하였다. 또한 우리나라 국민이 음료류를 통한 중금속 섭취량은 FAO/UTfO에서 설정한 잠 정주간섭취처용량의 약 0.OleO.06% 이하로 매우 낮았다. 편 연구조사에서 먼어진 결과는 음료류 중 납 기준 설정을 위한 중요한 기초자료로 활용할 수 있는 것으로 사료된다. The vatues of heavy metals In beverages were as fellows (min-max (mean) , mg/krl , Hg : 0.DOOI-0.0095(0.0004), As : ND-0.0245(0.0003), Pb ND-0.0893(0.0041), Cd : ND-0.0064(0.0011),Cu : ND-1.69(0.03), Mn : ND-3.94(0.16), Zn ND-12.85(0.28), Sn : ND-45.36(1,97). Our results weresimilar to thofe reported by other countries. It is thought that our results could be utilizedimportant references toT es?ablish the standard of lead in beverages.
Effect of Prenatal Dexamethasone on Sex-specific Changes in Embryonic and Placental Growth

To understand the effect of prenatal stress on sex-specific changes in embryonic and placental growth, a synthetic glucocorticoid (dexamethasone) was administered intraperitoneally at a dosage of 1 mg/kg body weight (BW) (Dex1) or 10 mg/kg BW (Dex10) to pregnant ICR mice at the gestational days 7.5, 8.5 and 9.5 post coitum (p.c.). Embryos and placentas were then harvested at days 11.5 and 18.5 p.c., and their body weight and size were measured following the determination of sex through PCR using Sry specific primers in tail tissues. As a result, female embryos presented reduced fetal body weight and size in Dex1- and Dex10-treated groups than those of control group at the embryonic day 11.5 p.c. Interestingly, the growth seems to be recovered at day 18.5 as there was no difference in growth between control and dexamethasone treated groups. In the case of males, Dex1 induced a decrease in fetal weight in day 11.5 and this pattern was maintained until day 18.5, whereas their growth was not affected by Dex10 treatment. Placental growth showed similar patterns to fetal growth in both sexes but the extent of reduction was not statistically significant in most cases. Placental weights in Dex1- and Dex10-treated group were decreased significantly in male only. The results imply that the effect of prenatal stress is largely sex dependent due to different strategies for growth and survival in a stressful environment.

The potentiometric responses for various anions are investigated with membrane electrode (membrane 1) based on 1,3-diethyl-1,3-dihydroxy-1,3-bis(2-dimethylaminomethyl ferrocenyl) disiloxane. The nitrate ion-selective electrode based on compound 1 gave a good Nernstian response of 58.18 mV per decade for nitrate with the detection limit of −e5.66 of log [NO3−e]. Compound 1 has all those functional groups and the other two compounds have less functional group of ferrocenyl or ferrocenyl and hydroxide, respectively. Even though, potentiometric response to anions was excellent at pH 5, the selectivity pattern for all three membrane electrode based on series of disiloxane is almost like Hofmeister sequence at pH 5. However, the membrane electrode 1-3 exhibited very different response to anions at pH 7. In this pH, NH2 is not protonated and ionophore may act as neutral carrier. Hydrogen bond may enhance the responsibility to hydrogen acceptors and intramolecular electro-active site may increase the permeability of analyte to ionophore in membrane.
Regional Distribution of Interstitial Cells of Cajal, (ICC) in Human Stomach

We elucidated the distribution of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) in human stomach, using cryosection and $c-Kit$ immunohistochemistry to identify $c-Kit$ positive ICC. Before $c-Kit$ staining, we routinely used hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining to identify every structure of human stomach, from mucosa to longitudinal muscle. HE staining revealed that the fundus greater curvature (GC) had prominent oblique muscle layer, and $c-Kit$ immunostaining $c-Kit$ positive ICC cells were found to have typical morphology of dense fusiform cell body with multiple processes protruding from the central cell body. In particular, we could observe dense processes and ramifications of ICC in myenteric area and longitudinal muscle layer of corpus GC. Interestingly, $c-Kit$ positive ICC-like cells which had morphology very similar to ICC were found in gastric mucosa. We could not find any significant difference in the distribution of ICC between fundus and corpus, except for submucosa where the density of ICC was much higher in gastric fundus than corpus. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in the density of ICC between each area of fundus and corpus, except for muscularis mucosa. Finally, we also found similar distribution of ICC in normal and cancerous tissue obtained from a patient who underwent pancreotomy and gastrectomy. In conclusion, ICC was found ubiquitously in human stomach and the density of ICC was significantly lower in the muscularis mucosa of both fundus/corpus and higher in the submucosa of gastric fundus than corpus.
