Hypoallergenic and Physicochemical Properties of the A2 β-Casein Fraction of Goat Milk

Goat milk has a protein composition similar to that of breast milk and contains abundant nutrients, but its use in functional foods is rather limited in comparison to milk from other sources. The aim of this study was to prepare a goat A2 β-casein fraction with improved digestibility and hypoallergenic properties. We investigated the optimal conditions for the separation of A2 β-casein fraction from goat milk by pH adjustment to pH 4.4 and treating the casein suspension with calcium chloride (0.05 M for 1 h at 25°C). Selective reduction of β- lactoglobulin and αs-casein was confirmed using sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The hypoallergenic property of A2 β-casein fraction was examined by measuring the release of histamine and tumor necrosis factor alpha from HMC-1 human mast cells exposed to different proteins, including A2 β-casein fraction. There was no significant difference in levels of both indicators between A2 β-casein treatment and the control (no protein treatment). The A2 β-casein fraction is abundant in essential amino acids, especially, branched-chain amino acids (leucine, valine, and isoleucine). The physicochemical properties of A2 β-casein fraction, including protein solubility and viscosity, are similar to those of bovine whole casein which is widely used as a protein source in various foods. Therefore, the goat A2 β-casein fraction may be useful as a food material with good digestibility and hypoallergenic properties for infants, the elderly, and people with metabolic disorders.

By screening a Pimpinella brachycarpa shoot tip cDNA library with the soybean homeo-domain-leucine zipper (HD-Aip) gene, Gmhl, as a probe, we isolated three cDNA clones, Phz1, Phz2, and Phz4, encoding polypeptides that contain a homeodomain and a closely linked leucine zipper motif. In both nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences, Phz1, Phz2, and Phz4 were highly homologous to two Arabidopsis thaliana HD-Zip genes, a soybean HD-Zip gene and a tomato HD-Zip gene in an HD-Aip motif. Genomic Southern blot analysis indicated that Phz2 and Phz4 are members of a multigene family. RNase protection assay revealed that Phz2 and Phz4 are expressed at all organs including leaves, petioles, roots and shoot tips. So far, these HD- Zip proteins have been found only in dicotyledonous plants. Thus, it may be speculated that Phz1, Phz2, and Phz4 proteins could impart functional characters unique to the dicotyledonous plants that would express them in processes common to those plants.

This study was undertaken in order to examine the characteristics and potential uses of pearl barley. This study can be summarized as follows. 1. Pearl barley grows well as compared to other cereals, even on the river side and on the reclaimed land. 2. The contents of protein, fat, and minerals in pearl barley are higher than those of other cereals such as barley and rice. But it is not said to be an excellent protein or fat source foods because the quality is lower than other cereals. 3. The past usage of pearl barley in herb medicine. Suggested that it might contain a lot of remedical compounds. Thus, the investigation in this aspect should be pursued. 4. There may be various ways of uses when pearl barley is mixed with other food items.

We report here on a case of diffuse sclerosing papillary carcinoma (DSPC), which is a subtype of papillary carcinoma of thyroid, in a 27-year-old female. The ultrasound images showed diffuse enlargement of the thyroid lobes and this was associated with underlying diffuse scattered microcalcifications and a heterogeneous hypoechoic background parenchyma that was without any masses. The CT image showeddiffuse scattered dot-like hyperdensities with bilateral multiple metastastic lymph nodes. Because making the cytological diagnosis of DSPC is still challenging, the radiological findings that show this disease's characteristic features may be important clues for making the correct diagnosis. <B>(Ko</B><B></B><B>rean J Endocrine Surg 2008;8:43-47)</B>

We have proposed a 2-bit/cell split gate flash memory device with double gate structure. As well as the separation of the charge storage nodes physically, a supplementary select gate is appended to enhance the programming efficiency by the source-side injection (SSI). Conventional split gate device operation requires 3 gates. In this paper, we show that a device which requires only 2 gates is able to perfectly behave like common split gate, by using a numerical simulator.

Purpose: Differentiation of parathyroid and thyroid nodule is often difficult even with aids of ultrasonography and computed tomography. Tc-9m sestamibi (MIBI) scintigraphy is useful in the detection of hyperfuntioning parathyroid nodules. However, its role in the differentiation between parathyroid and thyroid nodules including malignancies is not well studied. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evlauate the role of Tc-99m MIBI imaing in the differentiation of parathyroid adenoma from thyroid malignancy. Methods: Six patients (4 women, 2 men, mean age 43 years) with parathyroid adenoma and 4 patients (2 women, 2 men, mean age 56 years) with thyroid papillary cancer were enrolled. Ten and 180 minutes after injection of 740 MBq Tc-99m MIBI, pinhole image of the anterior neck was obtained. Nodule-to-thyroid ratio (N:T) was measured from same sized region of interests over nodule and normal thyroid bed. Retention Index (RI) was calculated as N:T 10 minus N:T 180 divided by N:T 10. Results: Patients with parathyroid adenoma showed similar N:T 10 as those with thyroid cancer (1.09 / 0.35, 1.24/ 0.36, respectively, P>0.05 ). However, RI of parathyroid patients was higher than thyroid cancer patients (0.64 / 0.29, 0.12/ 0.20, respectively, P<0.05). Conclusion: Parathyroid adenoma showed higher retention rate of Tc-99m MIBI than thyroid cancer. Therefore, differntiation of parathyroid and thyroid nodule could be possible using Tc-99m MIBI scintigraphy. (Korean J Endocrine Surg 2002;2:15-18)
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitory Flavonoids from the Root Bark of Cudrania tricuspidata

Two new benzylated flavonoids, 5,7,4'-trihydroxy-6-p-hydroxybenzylflavanone (1) and 5,7,4'-trihydroxy-6,8-di-p-hydroxybenzylflavanone (2) together with six known flavonoids, kaempferol (3), artocarpesin (4), cycloartocarpesin (5), cudraflavone D (6), gericudranin E (7), and leachianone G (8) have been isolated from the root bark of Cudrania tricuspidata. The structures of 1 and 2 were characterized based on spectroscopic data including 1D- and 2D-NMR. All the isolates were evaluated for their inhibitory effects of monoamine oxidase (MAO). Among them, kaempferol (3), artocarpesin (4), and cudraflavone D (6) showed moderate inhibitory effects with IC50 values of 82.3, 30.8, and 71.8 mM, respectively.
