<P>Castleman's disease is an uncommon disorder characterized by benign proliferation of the lymphoid tissue that occurs most commonly in the mediastinum. Although unusual locations and manifestations have been reported, involvement of the renal parenchyma and sinus, and moreover, manifestations as cardiac tamponade are extremely rare. Here, we present a rare case of Castleman's disease in the renal parenchyma and sinus that also accompanied cardiac tamponade.</P>
Anti-proliferative efficacy comparison of conjugated linoleic acid on human cancer cell lines

The anti-proliferative efficacy of t,t-conjugated linoleic acid (t,t-CLA), c9,t11-CLA, and t10,c12-CLA was compared in several human cancer cell lines. Gastric NCI-N87, liver Hep3B, pancreas Capan-2, and lung NCI-H522 cancer cells were incubated with 50 μM CLA isomers over a period of 6 days. The t,t-CLA inhibited the growth of all cancer cell lines to different extents, but c9,t11-CLA and t10,c12-CLA inhibited or stimulated the growth of the cancer cell lines. NCI-N87 cells were the most sensitive to growth inhibition and apoptosis from all CLA isomers tested. In NCI-N87 cells, CLA isomers reduced the release of arachidonic acid (AA) via the inhibition of cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2 ) activity, consequently reducing the production of PGE2 through the inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). The efficacies of CLA isomers were in the following order (from most to least effective): t,t-CLA, t10,c12-CLA and c9,t11-CLA. Overall, these results imply that the anti-proliferative efficacy of t,t-CLA on cancer cells, especially NCI-N87 cells, was greater than other CLA isomers due to its induction of apoptosis through the inhibition of cPLA2 and COX-2 activities.

As the global pandemic coincides with the advancement in VR/AR technology, the concept of virtually replicating the natural world and its experience is getting attention under the new term ‘metaverse.’ However, the absence of physical interaction between the user and the virtual context is a critical obstacle. In this study, we report a proof-of- concept design and its implementation of the upper limb exoskeleton as a novel metaverse interface device (MID). This device can measure the complex motion of a human elbow and shoulder as input signals and then simulate them in a physical force and torque as output responses under a metaverse environment like Unity. As the evaluation of MID, the Haptic Fidelity evaluation and the results using electroencephalogram measurement devices are presented. This is a measure that can evaluate the immersion of MID. We hope this study will be helpful to serve as a starting point for introducing a genuinely immersive metaverse experience, leading to human-computer interaction.

Malignant mesothelioma has been considered a uniformly fatal disease associated with a median survival of 4 to 18 months. However, a multimodality approach toward therapy may Increase the length of palliation when a maximal resection of tumor is achieved. Recently we have experienced a 49 years-old male patient who had d ffuse malignant mesothelioma. The patient has complained of blood-tinged sputum and right chest pain for several months. Chest x-rays and CT scans showed compact haziness in the right entire thorax with massive bloody elusion, diffuse pleural thickening and collapsed underlying lung. We performed extrapleural pneumonectomy, and postoperative chemotherapy with cisplatin and mltomycin (Memorial Sloan-fettering Cancer Center method) was done. We are observing him for months now and there is no evidence of local recurrence. 미만형 악성 중피세포종은 4∼18개월의 평균생존율을 지닌 치명적인 질환으로 여겨져 왔다. 그러나 종양을 최대한 절제한 후 다양한 접근을 통한 치료방법으로 생존기간을 연장할 수 있다 최근 저자들은 미만형 악성 중피세포종을 가진 49세 남자환자를 치험하였기 에 보고하는 바이다. 환자 는 수개월 동안 혈성객담 및 우측흥통을 호소하였고, 단순흉부사진 및 컴퓨터 단층촬영에서 우측 전흥 강이 진한 음영으로 가리워 져 있었으며 많은 양의 혈성삼출, 미만성 늑막비후와 폐허탈, 파괴 등의 소견 을 보였다. 저자들은 늑막케절제술을 시행하였고, cisplatin과 mitomycin으로 보조적인 항암화학요법을 하였다. 그후 환자는 수 개월간 외래 추적관찰을 받았으며 술후 4개월 현재까지 국소재발의 증거는 없었다.
Inhibition of Monoamine Oxidase B by Cigarette Smoke Constituents

Cigarette smoking is known to suppress both 1-methy14-phenyl-155,Ltetrahydropy-ridine (MPTP)-induced parkinsonism and idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the precise mechanism underlying its protective action against PD is not clearly elucidated yet. In order to find possible clue on the mechanism of protective action of smoking, we investigated the inhibitory effect of cigarette smoke components on rat brain mitochondria1 monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B), responsible enzyme for the activation of MPTP to its toxic metabolitesr and identified the components having an inhibitory potency on this enzyme from cigarette smoke. Total 31 eligible constituents including nicotine were selected from cigarette smoke condensates via solvents partitioning and silica gel chromatographic separation, and inhibitory potencies of 19 components on MAO-B were determined. Hydroquinone and methylcatechol, the phenolic components, showed the strongest inhibitory potencies on MAO-B activity in the components tested. 3,4-Dihydroxybenzylamino, myosmine and indole in basic fracton, eugenol in phenolic fraction, and farnesol in neutral fraction also inhibited the enzyme activity dose-dependently. Among tobacco alkaloids tested only myosmine was effective for the inhibition of this enzyme. These results suggest that the decrease in MAO-B activity by such components derived from cigarette smoke seems to be related to the suppression of MPTP-induced neurotoxicity and to the less incidence of Parkinson's disease in smokers than in nonsmokers.
