      • The Current Status, Trend, and Influencing Factors to Malnutrition of Infants and Children in China

        Zhai, Feng-Ying,Wang, Hui-Jun,Chang, Su-Ying,Fu, Dawei,Ge, Keyou,Popkin, Barry M. The Korean Society of Community Nutrition 2004 Journal of community nutrition Vol.6 No.2

Children are the most nutrition sensitive sub-group of a population. The nutritional status of children should be especially emphasized at all levels. This study was performed to investigate the current status, trend, and influencing factors to malnutrition of infants and children in China. The study was mainly based on the China Health and Nutrition Survey which is a longitudinal study conducted in 8 provinces and the data on growth of children under 7 years of age in 9 cities in China. The result of this study showed that one fifth of the children under 5 years of age are still suffering from stunted growth and one tenth suffering from underweight. The nutrition intervention on children under 2 years of age, especially on those under 18 months should be emphasized. Better supplementary food can improve the nutritional status to decrease the prevalence of stunted children. Therefore, the development of supplementary food should be the priority and should be emphasized with breastfeeding.

A native Trichoderma harzianum strain Th62 displays antagonistic activities against phytopathogenic fungi and promotes the growth of Celosia cristata

        Yue-Feng Wang,Xue-Yue Hou,Chuan-Ying Jiang,Tong-Tong Zhai,Rui Miao,Jun-Jie Deng,Zhi-Hong Yao,Rongshu Zhang 한국원예학회 2021 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.62 No.2

Trichoderma spp. are widely applied, eco-friendly mycofungicides and plant growth promoters. Native Trichoderma strainsare likely to have more productive, stable biocontrol and biofertilizer activities since they are well adapted to the local environment. In this study, we isolated a native Trichoderma strain ‘Th62’ from the rhizosphere soil of wild Chelidonium majusplants in Harbin, China (126.6341°E, 45.7242°N). The isolated Trichoderma strain was identifi ed as a T. harzianum strainvia morphological observation and molecular methods based on the rDNA internal transcribed spacer region and elongationfactor-1α gene sequences. Signifi cant antagonistic activities of Th62 against fi ve soil-borne fungal phytopathogens,Fusarium oxysporum , Sclerotinia sclerotiorum , Alternaria alternata , Cytospora chrysosperma, and Rhizoctonia solani ,were confi rmed by dual-culture assays. Furthermore, the crude fermentation products of Th62 also displayed antifungalactivities against these fi ve pathogens. To evaluate the function of Th62 as a biofertilizer, we subsequently applied Th62on cockscomb ( Celosia cristata L), a plant species with both ornamental and medicinal values, by inoculation with Th62conidia at diff erent concentrations, 1 × 10 10 cfu mL −1 , 1 × 10 11 cfu mL −1 , and 1 × 10 12 cfu mL −1 . The benefi cial eff ects ofTh62 were evaluated by measuring the growth and photosynthetic traits of the inoculated cockscomb plants, and the resultsdemonstrated that Th62 signifi cantly improved the photosynthetic effi ciency, photosynthetic capacity, and the adaptabilityto intense light of the inoculated cockscomb plants compared to the controls. Consistently, Th62 inoculation signifi cantlyimproved the growth and fl ower yield of cockscomb. We presented a positive case of isolating and applying native microbialresources on local plantation practices.

Prevalence and Genetic Characterization of Toxoplasma gondii in Pet Dogs in Central China

        Wei-Feng Qian,Wen-Chao Yan,Tian-Qi Wang,Kai Zhai,Li-Fang Han,Chao-Chao Lv 대한기생충학열대의학회 2015 The Korean Journal of Parasitology Vol.53 No.1

The prevalence and genotype of Toxoplasma gondii infection in dogs in Henan Province, Central China was investigated. A total of 125 blood samples were collected from pet dogs during April to June 2013, and all samples were examined by indirect hemagglutination antibody test (IHA) and nested PCR. The overall T. gondii prevalence in pet dogs was 24.0% (30/125), with 20.8% (26/125) in IHA and 10.4% (13/125) in PCR, respectively. No statistical associations were found between animal gender and age and the prevalence of T. gondii infection. Thirteen positive DNA samples were genotyped using 11 PCR-RFLP markers, including SAG1, (3’+5’) SAG2, alt.SAG2, SAG3, BTUB, GRA6, c22-8, c29- 2, L358, PK1, and Apico. Of these, only 2 samples were genotyped with complete data for all loci, and a novel genotype (type III at SAG3 and GRA6 loci, and type I at other loci) was identified. This is the first report of genetic characterization of T. gondii infection in dogs in China.

The Influence of Changing PV Array Interconnections under a Non-uniform Irradiance

        Ding, Kun,Feng, Li,Qin, Si-Yu,Mao, Jing,Zhang, Jing-Wei,Wang, Xiang,Peng, Tao,Zhai, Quan-Xin The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2016 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.16 No.2

Usually, the output characteristics of a photovoltaic (PV) array are significantly affected by non-uniform irradiance which is caused by ambient obstacles, clouds, orientations, tilts, etc. Some local maximum power points (LMPP) in the current-voltage (I-V) curves of a PV array can result in power losses of the array. However, the output power at the global maximum power point (GMPP) is different in different interconnection schemes in a PV array. Therefore, based on the theoretical analysis and mathematical derivation of different topological structures of a PV array, this paper investigated the output characteristics of dual series PV arrays with different interconnections. The proposed mathematical models were also validated by experimental results. Finally, this paper also concluded that in terms of performance, the total cross tied (TCT) interconnection was not always the optimal structure, especially in a dual series PV array. When one of the PV modules was severely mismatched, the TCT worked worse than the series parallel (SP) structure. This research can provide guidance for switching the interconnection to gain the greatest energy yield in a changeable- structure PV system.

Study of temperature-induced structural evolution in (Na0.5Bi0.5)TiO3- (K0.5Bi0.5)TiO3-(K0.5Na0.5)NbO3 lead-free ceramics

        Xing Liu,Jiwei Zhai,Bo Shen,Feng Li,Yang Zhang,Peng Li,Baihui Liu 한국물리학회 2017 Current Applied Physics Vol.17 No.5

In this work, the temperature-induced structural evolution in 0.79(Na0.5Bi0.5)TiO3-0.2(K0.5Bi0.5)TiO3- 0.01(K0.5Na0.5)NbO3 (NKBNT) lead-free ceramics was investigated by Raman microscopic spectroscopy combined with electrical macroscopic measurements. The NKBNT ceramics possess the local structure with the coexisted rhombohedral R3c and tetragonal P4bm polar-nano-regions (PNRs). The R3c and P4bm PNRs coexist in a wide temperature range, then the local structure transforms to the P4bm PNRs around the temperature of dielectric maximum (Tm) evidenced by the doublet splitting of Ti-O modes (peak B) and oxygen octahedral vibrational modes (peak C). The discontinuous changes of wavenumber and linewidth of peak B2 and peak C3 as well as the dielectric local maxima around the rhombohedral-tetragonal phase transition temperature (TRT) are considered to result from the thermal evolution of R3c and P4bm PNRs. The macroscopic changes of non-polar phase with electric field and temperature were investigated by the temperature-dependent polarization-electric field (P-E) loops, current-electric field (I-E) loops and bipolar strain (S-E) curves. The electric-field level necessary to form the long-range ferroelectric order from non-polar phase associated with the stability of the induced ferroelectric phase depends strongly on the temperature.

      • Resveratrol directly targets COX-2 to inhibit carcinogenesis

        Zykova, Tatyana A.,Zhu, Feng,Zhai, Xiuhong,Ma, Wei-Ya,Ermakova, Svetlana P.,Lee, Ki Won,Bode, Ann M.,Dong, Zigang Wiley Subscription Services, Inc., A Wiley Company 2008 Molecular carcinogenesis Vol.47 No.10

<P>Targeted molecular cancer therapies can potentially deliver treatment directly to a specific protein or gene to optimize efficacy and reduce adverse side effects often associated with traditional chemotherapy. Key oncoprotein and oncogene targets are rapidly being identified based on their expression, pathogenesis and clinical outcome. One such protein target is cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), which is highly expressed in various cancers. Research findings suggest that resveratrol (RSVL; 3,5,4′-trihydroxy-trans-stilbene) demonstrates nonselective COX-2 inhibition. We report herein that RSVL directly binds with COX-2 and this binding is absolutely required for RSVL's inhibition of the ability of human colon adenocarcinoma HT-29 cells to form colonies in soft agar. Binding of COX-2 with RSVL was compared with two RSVL analogues, 3,3′,4′,5′,5-pentahydroxy-trans-stilbene (RSVL-2) or 3,4′,5-trimethoxy-trans-stilbene (RSVL-3). The results indicated that COX-2 binds with RSVL-2 more strongly than with RSVL, but does not bind with RSVL-3. RSVL or RSVL-2, but not RSVL-3, inhibited COX-2-mediated PGE2 production in vitro and ex vivo. HT-29 human colon adenocarcinoma cells express high levels of COX-2 and either RSVL or RSVL-2, but not RSVL-3, suppressed anchorage independent growth of these cells in soft agar. RSVL or RSVL-2 (not RSVL-3) suppressed growth of COX-2+/+ cells by 60% or 80%, respectively. Notably, cells deficient in COX-2 were unresponsive to RSVL or RSVL-2. These data suggest that the anticancer effects of RSVL or RSLV-2 might be mediated directly through COX-2. © 2008 Wiley-Liss, Inc.</P>

First-principles study of the switching characteristics of the 15,16-dinitrile DDP/CPD-based optical molecular switch with carbon nanotube electrodes

        Peng Zhao,Chang-feng Fang,Yi-ming Wang,Ya-xi Zhai,De-sheng Liu 한국물리학회 2009 Current Applied Physics Vol.9 No.6

We have studied the switching characteristics of an optical molecular switch based on the 15,16-dinitrile dihydropyrene/cyclophanediene (DDP/CPD) molecule with two single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) electrodes using first-principles transport calculations. It is shown that the DDP shows an overall higher conductance than the CPD at low bias which is independently of the SWCNT chirality. Meantime, the conductance of the molecular switch can be tuned by the chirality of the SWCNT. Surface Analysis and Clinical Study of Connective Tissue Around Calcium Phosphate Coated Titanium Dental Implants in a Canine Model

Zhao, Bao Hong,Feng, Hai Lan,Sun, Xiao Dan,Cui, Fu Zhai,Lee, In Seop Trans Tech Publications, Ltd. 2006 Key Engineering Materials Vol.309 No.-

<P>A part of the titanium dental implant surface, which will meet connective tissue after being inserted in mandibular bone, was coated with calcium phosphate by ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD). Twenty-four implants of coated and uncoated group were randomly placed in mandibles after 3 months of premolars extraction in beagle dogs. All the implants were firmly anchored in the bone and had no clinical signs of peri-implant inflammation after 3-month insertion. The probing depth in calcium phosphate coated group is 1.9±0.2 mm, less than in control group (2.1±0.2 mm) (p<0.05). Most of the probing sites tended to bleed upon probing in two groups. It might indicate that the calcium phosphate coating has the potential to promote soft tissue integration.</P>

Expression of Human FGF18 by Fusion with Oleosin in Arabidopsis thaliana Seeds

        Chao Jiang,Xiaokun Li,Feng Zhai,Nuo Xu,Jing Yang,Yunpeng Wang,Libo Jin,Haiyan Li 한국식물학회 2018 Journal of Plant Biology Vol.61 No.3

Expression of recombinant human fibroblast growthfactor 18 (hFGF18) in mammalian cells and Escherichia colihas been extensively used for fundamental research andclinical applications, but they are difficult, expensive. Theexpression of recombinant proteins fused to oleosin proteinhave distinct advantages, such as safety, ease, low cost. Sowe have expressed hFGF18 fused to oleosin protein in the oilbodies of Arabidopsis thaliana (A. thaliana) and screen theproliferation effect of NIH3T3 cells. The vector of oleosinhFGF18fusion gene was constructed and transformed intowild A. thaliana. Transformed A. thaliana lines were obtainedby the floral dip method and confirmed using polymerasechain reaction (PCR). The PCR results indicated that theoleosin-hFGF18 fusion gene was integrated into the A. thaliana genome. The oil bodies expression of oleosin-hFGF18was confirmed by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamidegel electrophoresis and western blotting. The biologicalactivity showed that oil bodies expressing oleosin-hFGF18could stimulate the proliferation of NIH3T3 cells.
