      • Development of a Mobile Application, "Wild Flowers of Bukhansan National Park (version 1.0)", for Identification of Plants in Bukhansan National Park

        We developed the educational purpose mobile application, named "Wild Flowers of Bukhansan National Park (version 1.0)", aiming for easy identification of wild flowers for students and visitors in the park. When visitors find a flower or part of plant in the park, visitors can search for its name utilizing the pictures and characters provided in their own smartphone mobile devices or tablet PCs. The application provides pictures of wild flowers in the park and character-based searching system based on 12 diagnostic features (e.g., growth form, leaf arrangement, flower symmetry, petal color, petal number, sepal number, etc). We adopted the complete floristic survey of Chung and Lee (1962) and added species that we confirmed their distribution in the park during the development of this application. In summary, number of vascular plants in this park was estimated to be 428 taxa including 100 families, 280 genera, 327 species, 1 subspecies, 50 varieties, and 5 formas. We provided a total of 588 pictures representing 358 taxa and each taxon includes multiple pictures in many cases. Included identification quizzes can be an efficient educational tool as well as fun activity for students and visitors who are learning plant species in Korea. Our next step will include GPS function in the application for indicating visitor's location and for providing previously reported sites of the species that we interested in the map of the park. The future application which includes GPS function will be a valuable tool for the monitoring of rare plants, plant researches related to the climate changes, etc. We currently provide Korean iPhone version only, and English version and both of android versions will be serviced soon.

      • Elevated TRAF2/6 expression in Parkinson's disease is caused by the loss of Parkin E3 ligase activity.

        <P>Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second leading neurodegenerative disease, and is known to be induced by environmental factors or genetic mutations. Among the verified genetic mutations of PD, Parkin, isolated from the PARK2 locus, shows an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern and is known to be an E3 ligase. However, the physiological target of Parkin and the molecular mechanism of Parkin-deficiency-induced PD have not been clearly demonstrated until now. It has recently been proposed that inflammation, suggesting as a causal factor for PD, is enhanced by Parkin deficiency. Thus, we examined the relationship between inflammation-related factors and Parkin. Here, we provide the evidence that Parkin suppresses inflammation and cytokine-induced cell death by promoting the proteasomal degradation of TRAF2/6 (TNF-α receptor-associated factor 2/6). Overexpression of Parkin can reduce the half-lives of TRAF2 and TRAF6, whereas si-Parkin can extend them. However, mutant Parkins did not alter the expression of TRAF2/6. Thus, loss of Parkin enhances sensitivity to TNF-α- or IL-1β-induced JNK activation and NF-κB activation. Indeed, si-Parkin-induced apoptosis is suppressed by the knockdown of TRAF6 or TRAF2. We also observed elevated expression levels of TRAF6 and a reduction of IκB in an 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine-induced PD mouse model. Moreover, elevated expression levels or aggregation of TRAF6 were detected in approximately half of the human PD tissues (7/15 cases) and 2 cases, respectively. In addition, TRAF6 and Parkin expression levels show a reverse relationship in human PD tissues. Our results strongly suggest that the reduction of Parkin or overexpression of TRAF2/6 by chronic inflammation would be the reason for occurrence of PD.</P>

      • 단기간 혈액투석 전 운동이 만성신부전 환자의 건강요인에 미치는 영향 : 혈액투석환자를 대상으로

        Forty-six patients receiving maintenance high-efficiency hemodialysis were studied before and after a 12-week conditioning program to determine the effects of physiologic and psychosocial functions. The subjects were assigned at random to either a exercise (n=25) or a control group (n=21). The subjects in the exercise group performed a combination of bicycle ergometry and treadmill walking two or four times a week for a total exercise time of 10-40 min per session. A low-level graded exercise treadmill stress test(GXT) were administered before and after training. Hematological and serum lipid profiles were also determined before and after training. Following training, there were improvements in physical work capacity(PWC) for the GXT(p〈0.05). Also there was increase in physical fitness(p〈0.05) compared with control. Although no significant differences in low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride, significant difference was observed for total cholesterol. Additionally, no significant changes were seen in hematological parameters, but psychosocial functions improved significantly after training. This study demonstrated that exercise training before hemodialysis can improve exercise capacities, physiologic and psychosocial functioning in end-stage renal disease patients. Thus, exercise training seems to have beneficial effects on physiologic and psychosocial functioning in hemodialysis patients, and should be considered as a therapeutic modality for their medical management and rehabilitation.

      • 비혈연간 조혈모세포이식 후 재발한 만성골수성백혈병에서 Gleevec에 의한 완전관해 및 공여자 조혈 재건 1예

        저자들은 만성골수성백혈병으로 동종 골수이식 후 림프구성급성전환으로 재발한 환자에서, Gleevec 투약 후 DLI (donor lymphocyte infusion) 없이 공여자 조혈(donor hematopoiesis)의 재건이 이루어지고, 세포유전학적, 분자생물학적 기준에서 모두 완전관해에 이르고, 12개월째 관해를 유지하고 있는 환자를 경험하였기에 이를 보고하는 바이다. 본례의 환자에서 Gleevec은 동종 골수이식 후 급성전환기로 재발한 환자에서도 매우 효과적인 것으로 나타났다. Gleevec은 동종 골수이식 후 재발한 만성골수성백혈병에서 Interferon-α, DLI, 2차골수이식 등 기존의 치료의 문제점을 보완할 수 있는 유용한 치료방법으로 사용될 수 있을 것으로 생각되며, 이의 장기적 치료효과의 평가와 기존치료와의 병합요법의 유용성 등에 대한 향후 연구가 필요할 것으로 생각된다. We report a 32-year old woman with chronic myelongenous leukemia (CML) in lymphoid blast crisis, who underwent allogenic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) from HLA phenotype full mached unrelated donor. Her disease relapsed into full-blown blast crisis. Upon treatment with gleevec, she achieved immediate remission of leukemia as well as the donor type hematopoiesis without donor lymphocyte infusion (DLI). Our case suggests the high effectiveness of gleevec in CML relapsed after allogeneic BMT. Further studies are needed to define the role of gleevec (with or without DLI) in the management of CML relapsed after allogeneic BMT.

        Cationic dispersed rosin sizes are the newest of the dispersed rosin sizes. Cationic dispersed rosin sizes are self-retaining of anionic fiber pulp. This means that alum is not required for size retention, therefore it is uniform over a wider range than with traditional dispersed rosin sizes. In this study, sizing effect and retention mechanism under neutral condition were studied on the basis of handsheets prepared under various conditions.

      • 흰쥐 척수 및 등뿌리신경절에서 Tyrosine Hydroxylase 함유구조물의 분포

        정상 흰쥐의 각 분절별 척수 및 등뿌리신경절에서 catecholamine 함유구조물의 분포를 알아보고자 tyrosine hydroxylase(TH)에 대한 항체를 이용하여 면역조직화학적 염색을 실시하였다. 그 결과 TH 함유신경세포는 목척수분절과 엉치척수분절에서 관찰되었다. 목척수분절의 TH 함유신경세포는 첫째와 둘째 목척수분절에서만 관찰되었으며 신경돌기가 잘 발달된 다각형의 세포인 것으로 보아 이들은 뇌줄기의 TH 함유신경세포군이 목척수분절로 연장된 것이라 생각된다. 그러나 엉치척수분절에서 관찰되는 대부분의 TH 함유신경세포는 세포돌기가 보이지 않고 세포체부분만 면역염색되어 관찰되는 것으로 보아 퇴화단계의 세포인 것으로 생각된다. TH 함유신경섬유는 척수의 모든 분절에서 관찰되었으며 이들 TH 함유신경섬유가 각 척수분절의 등뿔보다 배쪽뿔과 중간뿔에서 훨씬 높은 밀도로 관찰되는 것으로 보아 catecholamine은 척수에서 체성감각뿐만 아니라 자율신경계 및 운동신경계의 조절에 관여하리라 생각된다. 등뿌리신경절에서 관찰되는 TH 함유신경세포는 척수의 엉치분절에서 관찰되는 것과 마찬가지로 세포돌기가 거의 보이지 않고 세포체부분만 염색되어 보였다. 또한 등뿌리 신경절의 TH 함유신경섬유는 혈관의 벽을 나선형으로 감고 돌아가는 형태로 관찰되었으며 어느 것도 등뿌리신경절의 신경세포와 연관되어 관찰되지는 않았다. 이로 보아 정상 쥐의 등뿌리신경절에서 catecholamine은 신경세포 사이의 신경전달이나 졸절보다는 신경절 내의 혈류조절과 관계있을 것으로 생각된다. With the aim of gaining more insight into the catecholaminergic system in the nervous system of the rat, we have studied the precise distribution pattern of the tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactive (TH-IR) fibers and soma in the spinal cord and dorsal root ganglion. In the dorsal root ganglion (DRG) TH-IR fibers were observed to run along the vessel wall, spirally and not found in the neural tissue itself. A few TH-IR fibers were found in the spinal nerve, not in the ventral root. Many TH-IR neurons were distributed in the L3, 4, 5, and 6 DRG but none of them were found in the other DRG segments. In the spinal cord, TH-IR fibers have shown sparse distribution all over spinal cord but relatively dense distribution in the ventral hom, intermediolateral column, lamina I of the dorsal horn of the cervical, lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal segment. TH-IR neurons were found in the interrmediolateral column, dorsal gray commissure, dorsal horn of the C1 and C2 segments and S1-4 segments. TH-IR neurons in the cervical segments were polygonal or spindle shaped with well developed processes. In contrast to this, TH-IR neurons in the sacral segments were oval or spindle shaped withe no processes. In conclusion, neurons in the DRG were not influenced by catecholaminergic nervous input. Intrinsic catecholaminergic nervous systems were found in both of spinal cord and DRG.

      • 벌 자상에 의해 발생한 횡문근융해증과 급성신부전

        Rhabdomyolysis is a syndrome characterized by muscle necrosis and release of intracellular muscle constituents into the circulation. The spectrum of causes is quite broad and included disorders of traumatic, metabolic, infectious and toxic origin. However, rhabdomvolvsis and acute renal failure following bee sting is rare and its pathogenesis is not well known. We experienced a case of 63-year-old man with acute renal failure and rhabdomyolysis caused by bee sting. He was stung by bee on scalp and neck. Oliguria was developed within several hours. He has fully recovered after general supportive care including fluid therapy and diuretics. This case demonstrates that rhabdomvolysis with consequent acute renal failure are able to developed by bee sting.
