        Addition of V2O5-MnO2/USY-zeolite catalyst in PTFE fiber for bag filter and its catalytic activity tests for NH3-SCR at low-temperature

        This study investigated the catalytic activity of vanadium-manganese supported on USY-zeolite as a catalystfor low-temperature NO removal, and embedded the powder catalyst in PTFE filter of bag filter. TheV2O5-MnO2/USY-zeolite catalyst was prepared using the co-impregnation method, and the V2O5/MnO2ratio was 0/10, 2.5/7.5, 5/5, 7.5/2.5, or 10/0. The catalytic activity test for NH3-SCR(selective catalyticreduction) of NO was performed at 150–230 C. An enhanced NO conversion above 60% was exhibitedin the low-temperature region below 230 C, and the NO removal efficiency increased as the MnO2 contentincreased. The NH3-TPD and NO-TPD(Temperature Programmed Desorption) analysis confirmed thatthe NH3 adsorption of the catalyst more significantly influences the NO removal performance than the NOadsorption. As the MnO2 content on the catalysts increased, the strength and amount of adsorbed NH3increased, resulting in enhanced NO conversion. The catalyst-embedded PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene)fiber was prepared by extruding physically mixed PTFE and catalyst powder. Scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirmed that the catalyst was well dispersed on the surfaceand inside the PTFE fiber. The NO removal performance of the catalyst included PTFE fiber increased asthe amount of the catalysts added was increased.

      • 머리염색이 인체에 미치는 영향

        일상생활에서 모발염색은 흔히 접할 수 있는 미용의 한 종류로 특히 젊은층을 중심으로 폭발적으로 유행하고 있다. 염색을 위항 사용하는 약제는 표백제와 발색제 등 각종 화학약품이 사용되고 있으나 이로 인한 건강장해에 대한 연구는 그리 많지 않다. 저자들은 염색이 인체의 모발건강에 미치는 영향을 파악하기 위하여 염색과 관련된 주관적 증상과 모발의 변화에 대한 실험적 연구를 시행하였다. 동국대학교 경주 캠퍼스 재학생 80명을 대상으로 설문조사를 시행하여 염색 유 ·무 및 염색 후에 경험한 증상에 대해 설문 조사하였고, 의과대학 재학생 46명을 대상으로 피부 반응 테스트를 실시하였다. 또한 염색 전후의 모발 탄성도를 측정하였고 모발의 상태를 파악하기 위해 전자 현미경검사를 실시하였다. 설문조사 결과 염색 전에 비하여 염색 후 안구혼탁, 안구건조, 시력저하, 발진 및 접촉성 피부염, 모발손상, 모근손상 등의 증상을 더 많이 경험한다고 호소하였다(p<0.05). 모발손상과 모근손상은 헤어드라이어 사용 빈도에 따라 증가하는 것으로 조사되었다(p<0.05). 피부반응검사에서 가려움증이 가장 많은 증상이었으며 이는 여성보다는 남성에서 높은 것으로 조사되었다. 염색 전후의 모발장력은 염색 전 134.5±10.37g, 염색 128.0±30.69g, 염색 이틀 후 112.5±19.69g으로 나타났다. 염색 전후의 모발의 전자현미경 케라틴 층이 현저히 감소하고 모발이 가늘어지는 차이를 보였다. 염색은 모발손상, 모발 케라틴 손상 및 모근 손상, 발진 및 접촉성 피부반응, 안구혼탁, 안구건조, 시력 저하를 유발한다. 따라서 염색약으로 인한 손상에 대한 주의와 예방이 필요하다고 생각한다. 예방대책으로 염색 전 피부테스트를 통한 적합성 여부를 판단하는 것이 필요하며 가급적 염색을 피하는 것이 좋을 것이다. 염색약에 발암물질이 포함되어있다는 보고도 있어 염색 제조사의 철저한 실험과 염색 물질의 선별이 염색으로 인한 부작용을 최소화하는데 중요한 역할을 할 것이다. Hair coloring has became one of the most popular cosmetic activities to younger generations during last decade. However, there are few studies on the health effect of widespread use of chemical dyes. This study was conducted to study the effects of hair coloring dye on hair and other systems. We conducted a questionnaire survey of 80 persons in Kyongju campus, Dongguk University. We have done open patch skin test on 46 medical students. We also conducted scanning electron microscopy to examine the hair strength and structure before and after hair coloring process. Injury of hair and hair bulb, contact dermatitis, turbid eyes, xerophthalmia, and poor visual acuity were the main symptoms complained after hair coloring (p<0.05). Injury of hair and hair bulb were increased by frequency of hair-dryer use(p<0.05). In open patch test, pruritus was complanined by more than half of the subjects. Mean strength of hairs before and after hair coloring was as follows; 134.5 (SD 10.37)g before hair coloring, 128.0 (SD 30.69)g immediately after hair coloring, and 112.5 (SD 19.69)g after two days. The scanning electron microscopic findings of hair surface before and after hair coloring showed decreased keratin layer and thinning of the hair. Hair coloring induces injury to hair, its keratin layer, and hair bulb as well as contact dermatitis, turbid eyes, xerophthalmia, and poor visual acuity. Therefore, we think that precaution is needed in use of hair coloring dye. To prevent complications induced by hair coloring dye, it is necessary, especially to those with allergy or skin disorders, to perform skin test before action and avoid hair coloring whenever possible. Longterm health effects of hairdye should be studied and manufacturing companies should try to minimize complications induced by hair coloring dye.

      • L1210 세포증식에 대한 Glycyrrhizin의 억제작용 기전

        The purpose of this research was to investigate the mechanism of inhibitory action of Glycyrrhizin(GZ) on the proliferation of mouse leukemia cell-line, L1210 cells. The cytotoxic activity was tested using a colorimetric tertrazolium assay(MTT assay), the apoptosis was tested using flow cytometry. Nitric oxide(NO) production form mouse peritoneal macrophage was tested using a Griess method and the phagocytosis of human polymorphonuclear cells was tested using a lucigenin chemiluminescence. GZ ingibited the proliferation of L1210, BALB/c 3T3 cells and mouse thymocytes at 50 ug/ml/ GZ did not affect nitric oxide production from mouse peritoneal macrophages in vitro, but ingibited nitric oxide production from lipopolysaccharide and y-interferon treated macrophages. Macrophages of GZ-administered mice accelerated NO production. The proliferation of L1210 cells apoptosis of L1210 cells were induced by co-culture with macrophage of GZ-administered mice. The apoptosis of L1210 cells were induced by co-culture with macrophage of GZ-administered mice. GZ increased the phagocytosis of human polymorphonuclear cells. These results suggest that GZ inhibit the proliferation of L1210 cells not only as a direct cytotoxic agent o tumor cells, but also by the enhancement of NO production and phagocytic activity.

      • 자궁암세포(HeLa)에 대한 사군자탕과 수종 항암제의 병용투여 효과

        The studies were conducted to investigate the combined effects of Sa Kunja Tang(SKT) and several anti-cancer drugs. The effects of SKT and several anti-cancer drugs on the proliferation of HeLa cells, human cervical cell line, was estimated by MTT colorimetric assays. The SKT extract inhibited the proliferation of HeLa cell at 10^-4g/ml. The inhibitory action of the mitomycin C(MMC), mercaptopurine(MCP) and 5-fluorouracil(5-Fu) treated group, respectively, on the proliferation of HeLa cell was increased by the SKT. When the mice were treated by the MMC, the number of leukocyte was decreased significantly at the 1st and 3rd day, but recovered at the 7th day. In the groups of the MMC treated with the SKT, the number of leukocytes was increased significantly than the group of the MMC treated only at the 3rd day. The SKT extract decreased the thymus weight of mice. The SKT extract increased the number of plaque forming cells(PFC), but the MMC treated group decreased the number of PFC. The combined treatment of MMC and the SKT increased the number of PFC significantly than the MMC treated group. The SKT extract increased the proliferation of T cells, but the MMC treated group decreased the proliferation of T cells. The combined treatment of MMC and the SKT increased T cell proliferation significantly than the MMC treated group. In conclusion, the results presented in this paper suggest that the SKT extract can decrease the dose of anti-cancer drugs on HeLa cell, and recover the side dffects of the MMC, such as leukopenia and immunosuppresion, without any intercalating the anti-proliferative action of the MMC in vivo.

        The cytotoxicity of cantharidine(CTD), the main component of Cantharis, and the combined effect of CTD and anti-tumor drugs on HeLa. Hep G2,SK-OV3. KOHS-NP, BALB/c 3T3 cells, mouse splenocytes and human lymphocytes were estiated by MTT colorimetry assay. CTD inhibited the proliferation of anti-tumor cells, BALB/C 3T3, mouse spleen cells and human lymphocytes. CTD increased the cytotoxicity of mitomycin C, cisplatin or mercaptopurine on tumor cells and BALB/c 3T3 cells. These results indicate that cantharidine has the cytotoxicity of tumor cells, fibroblast cells and immunocytes.

        The purpose of this research was to investigate effects of Sa-Kunja-Tang(SKT) on immune cells of L1210 cell-transplanted mice. The apoptosis and T lymphocytes subopoulation were tested using a flow cytometry, and the proliferation was tested using a MTT assay. Nitric oxide production from mouse peritoneal macrophage was tested using a Griess reagents, and the phagocytic activity of mouse peritoneal macrophage was tested using a lucigenin chemiluminescence. SKT suppressed apoptosis of T-lymphocytes induced by L1210 transplantation. SKT decreased nitric oxide production from mice peritoneal macrophages increased by L1210 transplantation, and the phagocytic activity decreased by L1210 transplantation. These results suggest that SKT suppresses T lymphocyte apoptosis and macrophage activity in L1210 transplanted mice.

      • 사군자탕이 항암제를 투여한 마우스의 면역세포에 미치는 영향

        The purpose of this research was to investigate effects of Sa-Kunja-Tang(SKT) on immune cells of antitumor drugs administered mice. The apoptosis and T lymphocytes subpopulation were tested using a flow cytometry, and the proliferation was tested using a MTT assay. The administration of etoposide. vincristine or doxorubicin increased the apoptosis of T-lymphocytes, but the action of doxorubicin was decreased by the administration of SKT. The administration of etoposide or vincristine decreased helper T and cytotoxic T cells population of T lymphocytes, but the action of vincristine was recovered by the administration of SCT. The administration of etoposide, vincristine or doxorubicin decreased the proliferation of T-lymphocytes, but the action of doxorubicin was increased by the administration of SKT. These results suggest that SKT has a regulative function of T-lymphocytes in anti-tumor drugs administered mice.

        Inhibition of AChE from Phenthoate-Selected Diamondback Moth, Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae)

        The Inhibition of AChE activity was compared between susceptible and phenthoate resistant diamondback moth (DBM) using in vitro enzyme assay and native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). Dichlorvos and carbofuran were very effective to inhibit the AChE activity from S strains with I50 values of 0.38 and 0.21 M, respectively. However, the AChE from R strain was much less inhibited to dichlorvos, i.e. insensitive to dichlorvos with R/S ratio of 11.4, than phosphamidon, BPMC, and carbofuran with the R/S ratio of 2.8, 4.2, and 2.5, respectively. Direct-staining of native gel revealed that the majority of AChE from S strain was quickly deactivated by 50 M of dichlorvos that was the lowest concentration of the inhibitor in the experiment. However, the AChE activity from R strain was not fully inhibited by 500 M of dichlorvos. This result was confirmed in the repetitive experiment with head extracts of both strains separately prepared with three replications. In the incubation of AChE with 100 M of dichlorvos on native gel, the AChE from R strain was apparently insensitive to the inhibitor in contrast to the fully inhibited AChE from S strain.

        Inheritance and Cross Resistance of Phenthoate-Selected Diamondback Moth, Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae)

        The inheritance of the phenthoate-selected diamondback moth (DBM) was investigated, and the cross resistance was also examined against various insecticides. The phenthoate concentration-mortality relationship between F1 progenies (S♀×R♂, S♂×R♀) obtained from reciprocal crosses with the susceptible (S) and phenthoate-selected DBM strains (R) indicated the absence of sex-linked inheritance. The resistance ratios of F1S (S♀×R♂), F1R (S♂×R♀), and phenthoate-selected(R) strains were 23.8, 24.1, and 175.1, respectively. Degrees of dominance of the F1S and F1R progenies were 0.23 and 0.45. These results suggest that the inheritance of phenthoate resistance in DBM is controlled by one or more autosomal genes in a manner of incomplete dominance. This R strain exhibited a high level of cross resistance to parathion, pyrachlofos, and phosmet with resistance ratios of 51.1, 59.9 and 72.5, respectively, and also showed medium level of cross resistance to most organophosphorus insecticides with the range of resistance ratios among 5.0~50.0, except for acephate, demeton-S-methyl, profenofos, and pyridaphenthion showing low level of cross resistance with resistance ratios among 1.5-4.0. However, this R strain exhibited low level of cross resistance to most carbamate insecticides except BPMC showing resistance ratio of 5.3. Similar low level of cross resistance was observed from the pyrethroid and neonicotinoid insecticides with the resistance ratios among 1.2~4.6.
