Electro chemical corrosion tests were conducted on two structural steels, SS400 and SM490A, in various solutions with different pH values. All materials showed typical active corrosion behaviors in the solutions, and corrosion potential and current density were measured from the slopes obtained from the Tafel curves using linear polarization method. Corrosion potential increased in the acidic region and then decreased depending on the pH values of the solutions. All materials showed the fast corrosion rate in artificial acid rain(pH=4.7), but the slower corrosion rate was observed In NaOH solution(pH=12.0) for SS400 and In distilled watert(pH=7.0) for SM490A, respectively, which is thought to come from the difference in chemical composition of two alloys. Generally homogeneous corrosion occurred in acid rain condition, and almost no corrosion was observed in distilled water in both alloys. NaOH solution produced more corrosion than distilled water, and more corrosion had progressed in SS400 than in SM490A in 3.5% NaCl solution.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies using various industrial wastes for heavy metal stabilization in soil were conducted in order to find out new alternative amendments. The acid mine drainage sludge(AMDS) contains lots of metal oxides(hydroxides) that may be useful for heavy metal stabilization not only waste water treatment but also soil remediation. The aim of this study was to investigate the applicability of acid mine drainage sludge for heavy metals stabilization in soils METHODS AND RESULTS: Alkali soil contaminated with heavy metals was collected from the agricultural soils affected by the abandoned mine sites nearby. Three different amounts(1%, 3%, 5%) of AMDS were applied into control soil and contaminated soil. For determining the changes in the extractable heavy metals, CaCl2 and Mehlich-3 were applied as chemical assessments for metal stabilization. For biological assessments, lettuce(Lactuca sativa L.) and chinese cabbage(Brassica rapa var. glabra) were cultivated and accumulation of heavy metals on each plant were determined. It was revealed that AMDS reduced heavy metal mobility and bioavailability in soil, which resulted in the decreases in the accumulation of As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in each plant. CONCLUSION: Though the high level of heavy metal concentrations in AMDS, any considerable increase in the heavy metal availability was not observed with control and contaminated soil. In conclusion, these results indicated that AMDS could be applied to heavy metal contaminated soil as an alternative amendments for reducing heavy metal mobility and bioavailability.
양로시설거주노인의 사회적 접촉이 우울수준에 미치는 영향

본 연구는 시설거주 노인들의 다양한 사회적 접촉과 우울증과의 관련성을 연구하여 시설노인들이 보다 정신적으로 건강한 생활을 할 수 있도록 하기위한 방안을 제시하고자 서울지역 5개 양로시설에 거주하는 116명의 노인을 대상으로한 설문조사에 의해 이루어졌다. 본 연구결과에 의하면 자녀, 친척, 친구, 봉사자, 후원자등 시설 외부인과의 사회적 접촉이 있는 노인은 그렇지 않은 노인보다 우울성향이 낮으며, 친구와의 접촉이 친척과의 접촉보다 노인들의 정서에 더욱 긍정적 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 여러 가지 형태의 사회적 접촉중에서도 노인이 직접 찾아가서 만난 사람의 유무가 다른 형태의 사회적 접촉에 비해 높은 수준의 긍정적 영향을 보였다. 결과적으로 사회적 접촉이 많으면 많을수록, 그리고 본인이 느끼는 사회적 지지가 높으면 높을수록 시설노인의 우울성향은 낮게 나타나 사회적 접촉과 사회적 지지는 양로원 등 노인복지시설에 거주하는 노인의 정서에 긍정적 영향을 미치는 것으로 분석되었다. The purpose of this study is to present basic materials to promote psychological health of the order residents in welfare facilities, by analyzing impacts of social contacts on depression level. The subjects of 116 male and female old people living in 5 charge free residental homes for the aged in Seoul and Kyunggi area were interviewed for social contracts and self-rated depression scale. In this study, it is found that; 1) The more social contacts they have, the lower depression they have. Residents having social contact with outsiders such as their children, relatives, and friends have lower depression than others. 2) Those who feel themselves receiving social support have lower depression than others. 3) Overall in this study, contact with friends have more positive effects on depression than children or relatives do, Especially, residents who intentionally go out and have social contacts with friends have the lowest level of depression.
상염색체 우성 다낭종신에 동반된 일차성 알도스테론증 1예

We report the case of a 34-year-old woman with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease associated with primary aldosteronism due to left adrenal adenoma. Although autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease could mask hypokalemia and hypertension, refractory hypertension and hypokalemia were the clues that led to this diagnosis. The diagnosis of primary hyperaldosteronism was based on the presence of hypokalemia with excessive urinary potassium excretion and characteristic hormonal changes. Under laparoscopy, left adrenalectomy was performed. After surgery, plasma renin activity, plasma aldosterone titer, and serum potassium level normalized with only partial correction of the blood pressure. This could be explained by the persisting underlying polycystic kidney disease. We conclude that extrarenal causes in a hypertensive and hypokalemic patient with polycystic kidney disease may be ruled out.
