      • Clinical and Pathologic Features of Elderly Gastric Cancer

        Background: Gastric cancer is one of the most common cancers in Korea and the incidence of which is great in elderly patients. However, not much is known about elderly gastric cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the specific features of gastric cancer in elderly patients. Methods: We reviewed medical records of 1107 patients who had undergone radical gastrectomy for gastric cancers between June 2005 and December 2009. All the patients were divided into two groups: Non-elderly group aged under 65 (n=676) and elderly group aged 65 and above (n=431). Results: There were more symptomatic patients among elderly group compared with non-elderly group (54.2% vs. 62.1%; p=0.009). Comorbidity was more prevalent in the elderly group (29.6% vs. 61.9%; p<0.001). The elderly group showed higher frequency of elevated tumor markers (CEA: 4.9% vs. 8.7%; p=0.041), CA19-9: 6.1% vs. 13.2%; p=0.001) and advanced diseases (42.5% vs. 49.4%, p=0.023).There were no significant differences in N stage (62.4% vs. 58.2%; p=0.164) or H. pylori status (63.6% vs. 57.5%; p=0.153) between the two groups. More cancers were located in lower third among the elderly group (45.1% vs 51.3%; p=0.045). The elderly group had more patients with Lauren intestinal type (40.7% vs. 58.2%; p<0.001) and well (8.0% vs. 13.7%; p=0.002) or moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma (29.6% vs. 44.1%; p<0.001). Rate of complication did not differ between the two groups (6.1% vs. 8.1%; p=0.187). Microsatellite instability (p<0.001) and p53 overexpression (p<0.001) were more frequent in the elderly group. Conclusion: Elderly gastric cancer showed a tendency of being diagnosed at more advanced stage with symptoms. However, it was related to pathologic features known for favorable prognosis except for p53 overexpression. Also surgery in elderly was as tolerable as in young patients. Thus we recommend to consider surgery more frequently for elderly patients with operable gastric cancers.

        There are thyroid lymphoma and thyroid papillary cancer in thyroid disease which can happen being associated with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Thyroid lymphoma is a rare disease consisting of less than 1% of lymphoma and of 5% of thyroid cancer. It occurs with Hashimoto's thyroiditis in 75%, and the cause is the immune reaction in which autoantibodies originated from thyroid are exposed B-cell continually. Also, the incidence of thyroid cancer, especially thyroid papillary cancer, increases in Hashimoto's thyroiditis. The reason is that the genetic change-RET/PTC mutation- of Hashimoto's thyroiditis is specific to thyroid papillary cancer than to other cancer. Patients usually complain neck nodule or sudden neck mass growing, hoarseness and respiratory difficulty. FNA, USG, Neck CT, MRI, and RI scan can be used for diagnosis. We can choose radiation, operation, and chemotherapy in single form or combined form according to the stage and the location of disease. If a patient who has neck mass, the pathologic finding of it is similar to that of Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and it is resistant to thyroid hormonal therapy, we should consider that it can be thyroid lymphoma or thyroid papillary cancer associated with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. We report a case of thyroid MALT lymphoma combined with occult papillary cancer which was resistant to thyroid hormonal therapy and which was successfully treated by operation and radiation therapy.       • The Sex Ratio and Density of the Mason bee (Osmia cornifrons) for Apple Pollination

        The nesting behavior, reproduction, fruit set and shape of O. cornifrons varied significantly with the released sex ratio of O. cornifrons. A female : male sex ratio of 1 : 2 was resulted in a 3.4 to 6.7 fold higher than other sex ratio in a nesting behavior. A ratio of 1 : 2 resulted in a 1.2-fold nesting rate, which was slightly higher than other nesting rates. Releasing only males resulted in a 2.4-fold greater amount of fruit set in non-pollinated sites. A sex ratio of 1 : 2 gave a slightly higher shape index and a 1.2 to 1.6-fold lower asymmetric index than other sex ratios. There was no significant difference between female release numbers in fruit set, and 100 to 200 females gave a slightly higher shape index than 400 females. Thus, we determined that 200 females should be released per 2,000㎡ and that the sex ratio of females to males should be 1 : 2.

        한지형 잔디의 조성시기, 초종 혼합 비율이 잔디 피복에 미치는 영향

        This study was conducted to find out the effect of sodding and seeding time and rate of seed mixtures on the establishment of cool-season turfgrasses by evaluating the turf coverage rates for two years.<br/> In fall planting, the required establishment period of full coverage(100%) was 1.5 months with a rolled turf sodding(Kentucky bluegrass 100%, Kentucky bluegrass 80%+Perennial ryegrass 20%). The 100% turf establishment was achieved in 7 months with Perennial ryegrass 100%, and 7.5 months by seeding with Kentucky bluegrass 100%(KB100), Kentucky bluegrass 80%+Perennial ryegrass 20%(KB80+PR20), Kentucky bluegrass 70%+Perennial ryegrass 30%(KB70+PR30).<br/> In spring planting, the establishment periods for sod with KB100 or KB80+PR20 were taken one month. However, in the case of seeding, the establishment periods were 3 months, 3.5 months, 3.5 months and 4 months with PR100, KB80+PR20, KB70+PR30, and KB100, respectively. Comparing the turf establishment vigor between fall and spring planting, the vigor was higher in spring planting than in fall planting in both sodding and seeding.<br/> In the case of spring planting, the most proper time for turf establishment was tested on April, May, and June trials. The effect was significant in establishment vigor. The result showed highest on April planting. On May and June trials, establishment vigors were decreased gradually. As the mixture rate of PR increased, ryegrass, establishment vigor was decreased with the rates. These results indicated that perennial ryegrass has relatively less tolerant to summer heat than Kentucky bluegrass.<br/> Number of shoots in 95 days after seeding was higher in KB100 by 16,600 per ㎡ than in PR100 by 12,400 per ㎡, while the lowest number showed in KB50+PR50 by 3,300 per ㎡. Those in KB80:PR20, KB70:PR30 were 6,700 and 4,900 per ㎡, respectively. The ratios of tillers according to mixture rates between Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass were KB80:PR20=87:13, KB70:PR30=78:22, and KB50:PR50=48:52.<br/> According to results in this study, ideal seeding time might be spring (April) than in fall (September), and proper mixture rate was 80% of Kentucky bluegrass with 20% of perennial ryegrass.

      • RE-09 : High mobility group box-1 and Toll like receptor 4 in Endometriosis: Mediating NF-kB pathway

        목적: The aim of the study was to examine the sterile, chronic inflammatory status in endometriosis by detecting High mobility group box-1 (HMGB-1), and HMGB-1 signaling through toll like receptor (TLR) 4 in endometrial stromal cell, which activates NF-kB pathway that might play a pathogenic role in endometriosis. 방법: Total 69 patients who had undergone hysterectomy from March, 2012 to March, 2014 were included: 39 patients who had endometriosis as case group, 30 participants without endometriosis as the control. Expression of HMGB-1 in endometrium was examined by immunohistochemistry. From endometriosis patient, eutopic endometrium was obtained and used to culture in vitro. To confirm the association of HMGB-1 and TLR4 in NF-kB pathway, the cultured human endometrial stromal cells (HESCs) were treated with recombinant HMGB-1 (15 ng/mL) for 0, 12, 24, 48 hrs. TLR4 antagonist (LPS-RS) was added after rHMGB-1 treatment to HESCs to see the change of proliferation after inhibiting TLR4. CCK8 proliferation assay kit. Real-time PCR and western blotting were used to examine the proliferation, quantification of the mRNA and protein. Specific inhibitor of NF-κB signaling pathway (TPCA-1) was used to explore the role of NF-κB signaling pathway in HESCs proliferation. 결과: HMGB-1 expression was significantly higher in glandular epithelial and stromal cells of endometriosis group compared to the controls. rHMGB-1 significantly enhanced cell proliferation in HESCs and increased TLR4 expression by dose dependent fashion. Inhibiting TLR4 by LPS-RS, cell proliferation in HESCs and expression of TLR4 were significantly decreased comparing to the controls. After blocking NF-kB pathway with TPCA-1, cell proliferation in HESCs was significantly decreased by dose dependent fashion. 결론: This study showed that HMGB-1 may play an important role through TLR4 and NF-kB pathway, in inflammatory cascade of pathogenesis in endometriosis.

        한국의 중소·중견기업이 글로벌 강소기업으로 성장하기 위해서는 어떠한 역량이 필요한가? 본고에서는 자원기반관점을 바탕으로 글로벌 혁신역량과 글로벌 시장역량을 글로벌 강소기업으로 성장하기 위한 핵심역량으로 제시하고 있으며, 이들 역량이 제품개발전략과 시장선택전략을 통해 글로벌 경영성과에 긍정적인 영향을 준다고 보고 있다. 글로벌 강소기업과 후보기업 400개를 설문조사하고 회귀분석을 바탕으로 글로벌 혁신역량과 글로벌 시장역량이 이들 기업의 글로벌 경영성과를 결정하는 요인인지, 어떤 역량이 보다 중요한 요인인지를 분석하였다. 이어서 경로분석을 바탕으로 이들 역량이 제품개발전략과 시장선택전략을 통해 경영성과에 영향을 미치는지를 분석하였다. 또한 글로벌 시장진입장벽이 글로벌 경영성과에 어떠한 영향을 주는지를 분석하였다. 이들 분석결과를 바탕으로 한국의 중소·중견기업이 글로벌 강소기업으로 성장하기 위한 핵심역량과 함께 이론적이고 전략적인 시사점을 제시하였다. What factors make Korean SMEs globally competitive companies, also known as global hidden champions? The survey conducted on 400 Korean SMEs showed that global innovation capability and global market capability are the major determinants of a firm`s performance, and that global innovation capability is a more important factor than global market capability. The path analysis showed that both capabilities affect the performance through product development strategy, but not through market selection strategy. Barriers to global market entry was found to be a negative factor. This study suggests that a firm`s performance is determined by the managerial ability as well as the resources, and that the resource-based view can be applied not only to big companies with abundant resources but also to SMEs that have limited resources. Several strategies are proposed for Korean SMEs in becoming a global hidden champion; 1)being born global rather than gradual global for a quick export expansion, 2)obtaining and utilizing RandD resources efficiently and effectively, and 3)training regional specialists to overcome barriers to global market entry.

        Apoptotic Effect of Co-treatment with Chios Gum Mastic and HS-1200 on G361 Human Melanoma Cell Line

        Chios gum mastic (CGM) is a resinous exudate obtained from the stem and the main leaves of Pistacia lenticulus tree native to Mediterranean areas. Recently it reported that CGM induce apoptosis in a few cancer cells in vitro. Bile acids and their synthetic derivatives induced apoptosis in various kinds of cancer cells and anticancer effects. It has been reported that the synthetic chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) derivatives showed apoptosis-inducing activity on various cancer cells in vitro. This study was undertaken to investigate the synergistic apoptotic effect of cotreatment with a natural product, CGM and a CDCA derivative, HS-1200 on G361 human melanoma cells. To investigate whether the co-treatment of CGM and HS-1200 compared with each single treatment efficiently reduced the viability of G361 cells, MTT assay was conducted. To investigate augmentation of apoptosis in G631 cells co-treated with CGM and HS-1200, DNA electrophoresis, Hoechst staining, proteasome activity assay, flow cytometry, Westen blot analyses, immunofluorescent staining and confocal microscopy were performed. In this study, G361 cells co-treated with CGM and HS-1200 showed several lines of apoptotic manifestation such as nuclear condensations, DNA fragmentation, the reduction of MMP and proteasome activity, the decrease of DNA content, the release of cytochrome c into cytosol, the translocation of AIF and DFF40 (CAD) onto nuclei, activation of caspase-9, caspase-3, PARP and DFF45 (ICAD), and up-regulation of Bax whereas each single treated G361 cells did not. Although the single treatment of 40 μg/mL CGM or 25 μM HS-1200 for 24 hrs did not induce apoptosis, the co-treatment of them induced prominently apoptosis. Therefore, combination therapy of CGM and HS-1200 could be considered, in the future, as an alternative therapeutic strategy for human melanoma.
