By using a lacZ operon fusion genomic library of the Escherichia coli O157:H7 Sakai, we identified phosphatestarvation-inducible (psi) promoters located upstream of the yibD and ytfK genes. They have been previously proposed to belong to the phosphate regulon (pho regulon) by Beak and Lee (2006), based on the DNA array and in vivo transcriptional experiments. However, the direct interaction of these promoters with the activator protein of the pho regulon, PhoB, has not been determined. We determined the binding regions of PhoB in these promoter regions by DNase I footprinting. Both regions contained two pho boxes similar to the consensus sequence for PhoB binding.

<P>An iron–phthalocyanine complex was utilized as a cathode for constructing a one-compartment hydrogen peroxide fuel cell operated under acidic conditions for the first time. The protonation to the phthalocyanine ligand is crucial to exhibit high activity toward hydrogen peroxide reduction. Endocuff-Assisted versus Cap-Assisted Colonoscopy Performed by Trainees: A Retrospective Study

Background/Aims: The adenoma detection rate (ADR) of screening colonoscopies performed by trainees is often lower than thatof colonoscopies performed by experts. The effcacy of cap-assisted colonoscopy (CAC) in adenoma detection is well documented,especially that of CACs performed by trainees. Endocuff, a new endoscopic cap, is reportedly useful for adenoma detection; however,no trials have compared the effcacy of Endocuff-assisted colonoscopy (EAC) and CAC conducted by trainees. Therefore, the presentstudy retrospectively compared the effcacy between EAC and CAC in trainees. Methods: This was a single-center, retrospective study involving 305 patients who underwent either EAC or CAC performed by threetrainees between January and December 2018. We evaluated the ADR, mean number of adenomas detected per patient (MAP), cecalintubation rate, cecal intubation time, and occurrence of complications between the EAC and CAC groups. Results: The ADR was significantly higher in the EAC group than in the CAC group (54.3% vs. 37.3%, p=0.019), as was the MAP (1.36vs. 0.74, p=0.003). No significant differences were found between the groups with respect to the cecal intubation rate or cecal intubationtime. No major complications occurred in either group. Conclusions: Our results suggest that EAC exhibits increased ADR and MAP compared to CAC when performed by trainees.

Background: Stenting is an effective treatment option for tracheal collapse in dogs. Cross-braided tracheal stents are currently the norm in veterinary medicine, but cross-and-hook braided stents have recently been adopted in human medicine. We examined whether stents manufactured using this novel braiding technique provided additional advantages for the treatment of tracheal collapse in dogs. Objectives: To evaluate the outcomes of cross-and-hook braided stent implantation in the treatment of tracheal collapse in dogs. Methods: The medical records of 22 client-owned dogs that underwent luminal placement of cross-and-hook braided Fauna Stents for the treatment of tracheal collapse between January 2018 and July 2021 were examined and data on canine signalment, clinical signs, diagnostic test results, surgical outcomes, and postoperative complications were retrieved and analyzed statistically. Results: Twenty-six stents were surgically implanted, with 20 dogs (90.9%) receiving one stent and the remaining two (9.1%) receiving two or more stents. All dogs survived the procedure. The median survival time at a median follow-up of 990 days was 879 days. At the final follow-up examination, loss or mild improvement of cough was observed in all dogs. Conclusions: Compared with conventional lumen stents, the cross-and-hook braided Fauna Stent offered a higher survival rate and improved clinical symptoms in all patients. The results of this study suggest that the Fauna Stent may be a promising treatment option for dogs with tracheal collapse.

Black tea is a popular beverage worldwide. Theaflavins (TFs), which are active functional components of black tea, are potentially valuable for preventing and/or treating the progression of periodontal diseases. Our previous pilot study showed that TF intake decreases the number of Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) bacteria in the saliva. In this study, we aimed to determine whether TF intake improves periodontal disease attributed to oral bacteria in a randomized, placebo-controlled, and double-blind study. A total of 56 healthy subjects without periodontal diseases were enrolled and assigned to the placebo and TF groups (n = 28). TF intake for 6 weeks did not significantly alter the clinical evaluation of subjects. There was no significant adverse effect among the subjects. The number of P. gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) bacteria, which was the primary endpoint in this study, was not impacted by TF intake. The change ratio of Prevotella intermedia was significantly decreased by TF intake (P = .043) when compared with the placebo group. Collectively, our findings suggest that TFs have beneficial effects on oral bacteria for the prevention of periodontal disease. The study protocol was registered in the University Hospital Medical Information Network (UMIN000020049).

This paper reports the clinical findings and surgical treatment of feline right patent ductus arteriosus (RPDA) with a left aortic arch. A two-month-old female Maine Coon was referred for an investigation of regurgitation after weaning. RPDA with a left aortic arch was diagnosed based on the echocardiographic and computed tomography (CT) findings. A right-fourth intercostal thoracotomy was found to be an appropriate approach to the duct. Preoperative diagnosis is crucial and diagnostic imaging, including radiography, echocardiography, and cardiac CT examination, is essential for determining if the aortic arch is right or left.
Preoperative serum microRNAs as potential prognostic biomarkers in ovarian clear cell carcinoma

Objective: Ovarian clear cell carcinoma (OCCC) is a subtype of epithelial ovarian carcinoma with poor prognosis. However, no effective biomarkers have been established for predicting unfavorable events, including recurrence and poor prognoses. Serum microRNAs (miRNAs) have been increasingly reported to be useful in predicting a patient’s condition and have been recognized as a potentially less-invasive source for liquid biopsy in cancer. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate serum miRNA profiles from patients with OCCC and to establish biomarker for predicting the prognoses. Methods: The GSE106817, which included preoperative serum miRNA profiles of patients with ovarian tumors, was used, and clinical information was investigated. In all, 66 patients with OCCC were included, excluding those with other histological subtypes or insufficient prognostic information. Moreover, miRNA profiles of OCCC tissues were also examined. Results: The median follow-up period was 64.3 (8.0–153.3) months. Based on multivariable Cox regression analyses and the expression of miRNAs in OCCC tissues, miR-150-3p, miR-3195, and miR-7704 were selected as miRNA candidates associated with both progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Then, the prognostic index was calculated based on expression values of 3 serum miRNAs. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis indicated that the prognostic index was significantly predictive of PFS and OS (p=0.004 and p=0.012, respectively). Conclusion: Preoperative serum miRNA profiles of miR-150-3p, miR-3195, and miR-7704 can be used to potentially predict the prognosis of patients with OCCC.
