We report an evaluation of the immunostimulatory effect of propolis volatiles from a stingless honeybee. We studied 34 elderly residents at a special nursing home. Twenty-one subjects were treated with propolis, 8 with $Binch\hat{o}$ charcoal and 5 subjects acted as controls. Subjects treated with either propolis or Bincho charcoal were housed in rooms separated from the other non-study residents in the nursing home. The effects of each treatment on natural killer (NK) cell activity and lymphocyte levels were examined after 2 months and then for a longer period. The results indicated that NK cell activity was significantly improved to that within the normal range only after propolis treatment.

The basement of the Hwacheon area in the northern part of the Gyeonggi massif in the Korean Peninsula comprises granulite and gneiss complexes that are separated by an extensive mylonite zone. Granulites distant from the mylonite zone show little evidence of a retrograde overprint beyond minor growth of biotite along garnet grain boundaries. Monazite grains enclosed in garnet show a core to rim decrease in Y, and those in the matrix show a peripheral enrichment of Y on low-Y interiors. Similarly, garnet grains decrease in Y from core to rim, with peripheral Y-enrichment, which can be attributed to early to peak garnet growth and post-growth modification, respectively. The three chemical domains representing stages of monazite growth show no detectable age difference, together yielding a CHIME age of 1868 ± 24 Ma. Granulites near the mylonite zone show growth of cordierite and biotite aggregates around garnet grains, and yield Permo-Triassic monazite domains on and within predominantly Paleo-proterozoic monazite grains. Mylonitized granulites have a metamorphic overprint characterized by the growth of the sillimanite and K-feldsper assemblage at ca. 241 Ma, subsequent to ductile shearing. Pelitic gneisses in the gneiss complex contain zircon grains with Neoproterozoic detrital cores and monazite grains with unequivocal metamorphic ages of ca. 245 Ma. Geological, petrological and chronological evidence suggests differing evolutional histories between two crustal domains prior to amalgamation. The widespread occurrence of Permo-Triassic paragneisses and mylonites in the Gyeonggi massif can be explained by detachment of the metamorphosed upper crust of the South China block, which was thrust over the Paleoproterozoic granulite complex at ca. 241 Ma during the Sulu orogeny. Permo-Triassic metamorphic overprints on the latter are attributed to contact metamorphism from the hot allochthon.
Preoperative serum microRNAs as potential prognostic biomarkers in ovarian clear cell carcinoma

Objective: Ovarian clear cell carcinoma (OCCC) is a subtype of epithelial ovarian carcinoma with poor prognosis. However, no effective biomarkers have been established for predicting unfavorable events, including recurrence and poor prognoses. Serum microRNAs (miRNAs) have been increasingly reported to be useful in predicting a patient’s condition and have been recognized as a potentially less-invasive source for liquid biopsy in cancer. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate serum miRNA profiles from patients with OCCC and to establish biomarker for predicting the prognoses. Methods: The GSE106817, which included preoperative serum miRNA profiles of patients with ovarian tumors, was used, and clinical information was investigated. In all, 66 patients with OCCC were included, excluding those with other histological subtypes or insufficient prognostic information. Moreover, miRNA profiles of OCCC tissues were also examined. Results: The median follow-up period was 64.3 (8.0–153.3) months. Based on multivariable Cox regression analyses and the expression of miRNAs in OCCC tissues, miR-150-3p, miR-3195, and miR-7704 were selected as miRNA candidates associated with both progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Then, the prognostic index was calculated based on expression values of 3 serum miRNAs. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis indicated that the prognostic index was significantly predictive of PFS and OS (p=0.004 and p=0.012, respectively). Conclusion: Preoperative serum miRNA profiles of miR-150-3p, miR-3195, and miR-7704 can be used to potentially predict the prognosis of patients with OCCC.

The Production of Xylitol by Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Agricultural Wastes

Agricultural waste products, beech wood and walnut shells, were hydrolyzed at 40oC using mixed crude enzymes produced by Penicillium sp. AHT-1 and Rhizomucor pusillus HHT-1. D-xylose, 4.1 g and 15.1 g was produced from the hydrolysis of 100 g of beech wood and walnut shells, respectively. For xylitol production, Candida tropicalis IFO0618 and the waste product hydrolyzed solutions were used. The effects on xylitol production, of adding glucose as a NADPH source, D-xylose and yeast extract, were examined. Finally, a 50% yield of xylitol was obtained by using the beech wood hydrolyzed solution with the addition of 1% yeast extract and 1% glucose at an initial concentration.

In order to predict of accuracy of movement just before the onset of movement using biological signals, the relationships between MRCP measured as a physiological index and the accuracy of task performance were investigated. As experiments, subjects touched the target appearing 300 pixels away from a start point in a verticaldirection on a touch-sensitive screen with the forefinger. During experiments, EEG, EMG as trigger, high-speed camera images, and task efficiency were acquired. As a result, significant differences between the high- and low-performance groups were clearly confirmed on the slope of NS in MRCPs. Furthermore, a difference between these groups wasconfirmed in duration of ballistic movement.

Objective: To clarify the frequency of deficient mismatch repair (dMMR) in Japanese ovarian cancer patients, we examined microsatellite instability (MSI) status and immunohistochemistry (IHC) subtypes, including endometrioid carcinoma (EMC), clear cell carcinoma (CCC), or a mixture of both (Mix). Methods: We registered 390 patients who were diagnosed with EMC/CCC/Mix between 2006 and 2015 and treated at seven participating facilities. For 339 patients confirmed eligible by the Central Pathological Review Board, MSI, IHC, and MutL homolog 1 methylation analyses were conducted. The tissues of patients with Lynch syndrome (LS)-related cancer histories, such as colorectal and endometrial cancer, were also investigated. Results: MSI-high (MSI-H) status was observed in 2/217 CCC (0.9%), 10/115 EMC (8.7%), and 1/4 Mix (25%). Additionally, loss of MMR protein expression (LoE-MMR) was observed in 5/219 (2.3%), 16/115 (14.0%), and 1/4 (25%) patients with CCC, EMC, and Mix, respectively. Both MSI-H and LoE-MMR were found significantly more often in EMC (p<0.001). The median (range) ages of patients with MMR expression and LoE-MMR were 54 (30–90) and 46 (22–76) (p=0.002), respectively. In the multivariate analysis, advanced stage and histological type were identified as prognostic factors. Conclusion: The dMMR rate for EMC/CCC was similar to that reported in Western countries. In Japan, it is assumed that the dMMR frequency is higher because of the increased proportion of CCC.

The EPMA analysis for CHIME dating requires standard materials, which include nuclear fuel materials thatare rare and sensitive to handle. Any laboratory that does not meet these standards has had difficulties adopting thewithout use of nuclear fuel materials. Mineral samples, such as small pieces of monazite that are homogeneous in X-rayintensities, are calibrated using well-characterized primary standards in one laboratory. Once this procedure is done, theycan be readily usable as working standards in the other laboratories, only with measurement of X-ray intensities. CHIME 연대 측정이 원활하게 이루어지고 일련의 표준 물질이 잘 구비된 실험실에서 X선 세기가 균질함이 확인된 모나자이트와 같은 광물편을 대상으로 보정 상수를 정확히 구하고, Th, U 등의 특성 X선 세기를 측정해두면, 다른 실험실에서는 단지 광물편의 특성 X선 세기를 측정하는 것만으로 바로 사용할 수 있는 표준 물질로 활용할 수 있다. 이 기법은 전자 현미 분석에서 화학성분과 X선 간섭 보정 계수의 결정에 필요한 표준 물질로 모두 활용이 가능하며, 광물 표준 물질의 복잡한 화학 성분에 대해 독립적이다.
