In the five years since 1993 Malaria has made a ceaseless attack on the native Koreans as an indigenously formed disease in addition to the imported one. This study was aimed at clinical symptoms and signs of Malaria which had occurred indigenously in Cheon-Nam. 18 cases were reviewed retrospectively in this study which was composed of 17 men and 1 woman. They were admitted to Chosun Hospital because of the indigenous Malaria in 1998. Fever and chill , the most frequent symptoms in early stages made a 100% occurrence followed by general myalgia(89%) and headache(83%). Physical examination of those admitted showed the splenomegaly most frequently in 61% of the patients. It took four to ten days to visit the hospital since the symptoms first occurred in the patients. Gametocytes among the Malarial life cycle were observed most commonly (91.3%) in the occurrence of the disease and the prestages of the life cycle as well. The hematologic abnormalities observed was Anemia(89%), Thrombocytopenia(61%), and Neutropenia(50%) in the order named. On the third hospital day since giving the standard Malarial drugs parasitemia decreased remarkably (1540/㎕ : Mean parasitic concentration) and 28th day of treatment no parasitemia were found. In conclusion the patients suffering from malaria in Cheon-Nam had been in an armistice area and the symptoms were so relatively mild that the responses to treatment were good and relapses occurred. But, it requires further epidemiologic survey and more concern about the indigenous Malaria.

[Background] Alcohol is the 9th largest factor for the global burden of disease, and national policies to reduce negative consequences of alcohol use are executed in many nations. Exposure to alcohol beverage advertisement and marketing is known to put adolescents and young adults at the great risk for onset and increased consumption of alcohol. [Purpose] According to WHO, regulations for alcohol marketing is one of the most effective policies to reduce negative consequences of alcohol use along with price and accessibility regulations of alcohol. However, the current alcohol marketing regulations in South Korea mainly focus on alcohol marketing through traditional media such as TV, radio, and newspapers, and do not sufficiently cover digital marketing using various new communication media. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the prevalence and types of violence against alcohol advertising regulations through Facebook. [Method] We analyzed the postings of Facebook accounts of 78 alcohol beverage manufacturing companies from March 24th to 31st in 2017. [Results] Overall, 92 postings were newly uploaded by 27 alcohol beverage manufacturing companies’ Facebook account. When comparing advertisements of different kinds of alcoholic beverages, 87 postings (43.7%) were related for Soju, which was followed by 41 postings (20.6%) for whiskey, 18 (9.0%) for beer. In terms of different marketing approaches, most postings tend to deliver information to promote alcohol consumptions such as showing alcohol drinking games, season related messages, food and settings that may go well with alcohol beverages, and other alcohol related information such as how alcohol beverages are produced. There was no posting on broad image marketing by any alcohol manufacturing company. In addition, 85.9% (79 postings) appeared to have violated the chapter 10 of the National Health Promotion Act on alcohol advertisement regulations. The most frequently violated regulation was that 82.6% (76 postings) did not present the warning label (76 postings). Also, 33.7% (31 postings) advertised alcoholic beverages that contained over 17% of alcohol, and 5.4% (5 postings) offered gifts; 33.7% (31 postings) violated 2 or more regulations at the same time. The results suggest the needs to strengthen the alcohol marketing through online communication media because such media have extended their influence on health behaviors through social network and smartphone interface.

Breeding and cultivation techniques are being treated very severely regarding ecological and physiological development in buckwheat. This study was conducted to focus on the diversity occurring in the cultivated and tartary buckwheat and provide an overview of the characteristics and genetic resources activities. Morphological results showed that the height of common buckwheat ranges from 82-90cm, common buckwheat induced by 200Gy ranges from 52-75cm, common buckwheat induced by 300Gy ranges from 43-56cm, common buckwheat induced by 400Gy ranges from 33-60cm whereas the tartary buckwheat hight ranges from 65-87cm, and while it exposed to various radiation (200Gy, 300Gy and 400Gy), the obtained height ranges from 73-92cm, 55-80cm and 60-75cm respectively. However, the stems from the both cultivar are hollow and that’s why, the plant is very prone to lodging. The leaf color of common buckwheat was green, 200Gray, 300Gy 400Gy common buckwheat light green and green, whereas the tartary buckwheat green and bottle-green, 200Gray 300Gy 400Gy tatary buckwheat bottle-green, common buckwheat (control, 200Gy, 300Gy, 400Gy) stem color is light green and pink, flower color is white, tartary buckwheat (control, 200Gy, 300Gy, 400Gy) flower color is light green. The stem color from tartary buckwheat showed (200Gy, 300Gy, 400Gy) light green and light red color. The results revealed that the two buckwheat cultivars showed diversified characteristics.
Generation of Dysfunctional Beauveria bassiana ERL1170 Transformant in Conidiogenesis

Beauveria bassiana isolates have been used in integrated pest management, but little consideration has been given to the studies on fungal gene expressions and their functions. In this work, to determine the functions of genes, B. bassiana ERL1170 was transformed by restriction enzyme-mediated integration method, where pABeG with bar gene was used as a transformation vector. Among seven hundred of transformants, morphologically different ERL1170-pABeG-#160 transformant, particularly dysfunctional in conidiogenesis. The transformant had yellow hyphal growth on fourth strength Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA/4) and produced very small amount of conidia (<1.0×105 conidia/cm2 agar) in 7 days, whereas wild type had white mycelial growth and significantly greater conidia (3.6×106 conidia/cm2 agar). Additionally under microscopic observation, hyphae of #160 seemed like indian club, compared to the straight forms of wild type hyphae. The next work is figure out possible genes contributing the conidiogenesis of B. bassiana.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) can be produced in mealworms, currently being used as animal feeds, by the infection of genetically engineered-entomopathogenic fungi. In this work, we integrated Bombyx mori (Bm) AMP, cecropin A to Beauveria bassiana ERL1170 by restriction enzyme-mediated integration method, which was confirmed by RT-PCR and an antibacterial activity assay. For the extracellular secretion of Bm cecropin A protein, the active domain of the cecropin A gene was tailed to the signal sequence of B. bassiana chitinase (Bbs). To exchange Bbs-cecropin A gene with egfp gene in pBARKS1-egfp, Bbs-cecropin A fragment was cut from pGEM-Bbs-cecropin A using XbaI/blunted and BamHI and ligated with cut pBARKS1-egfp using NcoI/blunted and BamHI, designated as pBARKS1-Bbscecropin A. After the transformation, transformants were grown on Czapek’s solution agar containing 600 μg ml-1PPT. Expression of Bm cecropin A was confirmed by RT-PCR. Strong clear zone was observed in the co-culture of the transformant D-6 and Bacillus subtilis on fourth strength Sabouraud dextrose agar 1 day after the culture at 25°C, whereas the wild type had no clear zone. This work suggests that Bm cecropin A can be efficiently produced in this mealworm-based fungal expression platform, thereby increasing the value of mealworms in the animal feed additive industry.
Fungal Transformation Conditions and Efficiency in Beauveria bassiana ERL1170

Entomopathogenic fungus, Beauveria bassiana can be used in integrated crop management and pharmaceutical applications. Recently some efforts have been given to the fungus to improve its biological performances, but low fungal transformation efficiency is one of the limitations. In this work, B. bassiana ERL1170 isolate was used for fungal transformation by restriction enzyme-mediated integration, where pBARKS1-Bbs-cecropinA was linearied using HindIII. The fungal transformation comprised two steps, preparation of competent blastospores and integration of the plasmid into the cells. To prepare competent blastospores, 2-d cultured blastospores were individually treated with 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.8 M lithium acetate (LiAc). Secondly in the integration step, concentration of LiAc and calcium chloride (CaCl2), and time period of heat shock were investigated as follows: LiAc, 1, 2 and 4 M; CaCl2, 50, 100 and 200 mM; and heat shock at 42℃, 20, 40 and 60 min. Consequently, combination of 0.2 M LiAc in preparing competent blastospores and 2 M LiAc and 200 mM CaCl2 in the second step showed the highest transformation efficiency. This work would be helpful in the fungal transformation of B. bassiana.
화학공장의 악취배출량으로부터 간이 악취 영향도 예측 사례

Odor sources of a chemical plant in Ulsan were surveyed and temperatures, humidities and flow rates of each exhaust gas were measured. The air samples collected from each source were transferred to the laboratory for sensory test and their odor concentrations were investigated. The odor emission rate of each source was estimated from the recorded results and assigned the sources expected to be needed for the odor prevention policy using the simple prediction equation of the affection by malodor to the nearest residential area. From the total odor emission rate of the examined plant and the relation table for expectable affection area, it was concluded that total odor emission of this plant might be decreased for the prevention of residential complaint.
